A Knight Who Eternally Regresses - Chapter 453
Chapter 453: CHAPTER 450
“It’s nothing serious. Just some bad luck.”
Oara said. She had ventured into the Demon Realm dozens of times—always alone.
At first, she only dealt with the monsters near the entrance.
Later, she went deeper, searching for a way to eliminate the Demon Realm.
In the end, she ventured further in, testing her theories.
During one of those ventures, Oara encountered a strange monster—a ghoul with highly toxic claws.
The moment she saw the ghoul, her Knightly instincts warned her that this wasn’t an easy foe.
It also served as evidence to support her hypothesis.
What exactly is the Demon Realm?
It could be considered another colony.
In a colony, if you kill the leader, the colony collapses.
So, what about the Demon Realm?
“It’s the same principle. This isn’t a very large Demon Realm, but it’s been here for over fifty years.”
She said, her words blending with the topic of poison. Encrid listened quietly.
Oara wasn’t a scholar, but she was a Knight who had dedicated her life to the dream of eliminating the gray forest Demon Realm before her eyes.
When there was something she didn’t understand, something she couldn’t even guess at, she would throw herself at the problem to solve it.
If she didn’t know something, she’d enter the Demon Realm and see for herself.
It was a method that would be unthinkable without overwhelming strength, but she did it. That’s how she figured it out.
“It’s a generational shift.”
She concluded. She wasn’t sure of the exact mechanism, but one thing was certain: the core of the Demon Realm changes.
Oara judged that this ghoul was the core meant to sustain the next generation of the Demon Realm.
In terms of a colony, it was the leader.
A few clashes with the ghoul revealed its superior strength, speed, and intelligence.
She didn’t know what the previous core was, nor did she care to.
For Oara, only one thing mattered: if she could defeat this evolved ghoul, the Demon Realm would lose its power.
No monster more dangerous than this one would emerge, and the rest could be exterminated with time.
Knights wouldn’t even be needed for that.
Roman would handle the rest.
Roman was her successor.
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
She had already chosen him.
If the opportunity arose, she would even sacrifice her life to erase the core of the Demon Realm.
It was her resolve and conviction.
Her expression brightened, an unusual sight. Will surged through her body.
It was strange, but as Oara spoke, she realized that talking to the man in front of her made her feel invigorated.
A part of the omnipotence she felt when she first became a Knight filled her once again.
“Is the poison incurable?”
Encrid, having grasped the key point, asked. Arrows flew once again over the darkened ground.
“Ohhh!”
The soldiers shouted their battle cries. Arrows rained down in tandem with the protection of the castle walls, and right in front of the gate stood the four Squires and two Junior-Knights.
If anything happened, they would immediately become a barrier and smash the approaching monsters’ heads.
Oara laughed at Encrid’s question and patted him on the back.
“Hey, do I look like I’m about to die? I’m working on finding a cure, so don’t worry. Besides, I’m good for at least another ten years, okay?”
She spoke with such confidence that it didn’t sound like a lie.
The poison was from the ghoul’s claws, but it couldn’t be cured immediately due to a combination of factors.
Despite this, she continued to venture into the Demon Realm multiple times.
She fought the ghoul two more times, resulting in a mix of different toxins, leading to further poisoning.
She had tried holy healing and renowned alchemist’s potions, but so far, nothing had worked.
After all, even the holy arts weren’t omnipotent.
“After seeing it a few times, I have to say, your back muscles are killer.”
Oara said, looking at her palm.
The firmness she felt from Encrid’s back muscles lingered on her hand, indicating that she liked the feel of it.
She went on to say that sometimes there were days like this.
Today was one of those days when monsters suddenly emerged as if causing trouble.
After all, the movements within the Demon Realm couldn’t be entirely predicted.
“These damn spiders.”
Oara muttered, her eyes shining white. Her gaze, infused with Will, pierced through the darkness.
A few giant monster spiders charged straight at the Squires and Junior-Knights.
She saw the massive creatures bearing down on the humans.
“Don’t mess with us!”
In front of them, Oliver swung his mace. Crack!
The spider’s head shattered, spilling black, sticky fluid.
“Dunbachel.”
Encrid called out to Dunbachel, who was standing some distance away.
Dunbachel sluggishly approached, dragging her feet, clearly reluctant to be there.
After singing about going back home for days, this reaction was only natural.
When Rem threatened to cut off her ankles if she dragged her feet one more time, Dunbachel quickened her pace.
Caw-caw.
The crow cawed tirelessly, and within the Demon Realm, the haunting hoots of owls echoed continuously.
“Can you see it?”
“More or less.”
She replied.
Beastfolk had keen night vision. Encrid, through training, could see somewhat in the dark, but not with her accuracy.
Then he heard Dunbachel speak.
“They’re holding them off in front of the castle walls.”
Screeech!
As if on cue, the spiders shrieked again. It was coming from just ahead of the gate.
A couple of torches illuminated the figures standing there, casting long shadows towards the Demon Realm.
The four Squires and two Junior-Knights stepped forward to face the oncoming spiders.
“They fight well.”
Dunbachel spoke, her voice devoid of emotion.
Encrid’s gaze remained fixed on the scene.
It was the same as always. The incoming spider monsters were being crushed and shattered. There was no sign of retreat.
Roman, who was holding one of the barriers built with sheer force, was truly a force to be reckoned with.
“Die with a smile on your face too!”
Roman shouted cheerfully.
There didn’t seem to be any struggle.
No threat. Yet, Encrid’s instincts were warning him. His skin prickled.
Why?
He didn’t know. Dunbachel, observing the fight, asked,
“Shouldn’t we just pull back?”
“Hey, Captain, something feels off.”
Rem approached and called out to Encrid.
Behind him, Luagarne cast a distant glance.
“Hmm?”
Even Oara tilted her head in confusion.
The sense of unease that Encrid felt wasn’t his alone.
Perhaps, having faced death countless times, Encrid was more sensitive to it.
But Oara also sensed that something was different from usual.
Oara blinked and thought. The number of monsters wasn’t as many as one would expect for a wave.
Spiders usually rely on overwhelming numbers to win.
That’s why some soldiers on the wall had started shooting arrows, wasn’t it?
So why did this feel so ominous? Why did the air feel so unsettling?
“Is it a double moon?”
It was rare, but there were times when both moons turned red.
They called it ‘Darpina’. It was said to be the day when the God of death descended to this land, and the God of monsters took a moment to observe the world. In other words, it was a day when unlucky things happened.
“Bring me my armor.”
Oara ordered, and two soldiers brought her armor. It was a combination of iron plates over the chest and leather padding in certain areas.
As she took off her cloak and began donning her armor, a commotion from below the castle wall, inside the gate, caught Encrid’s attention.
Among the sounds of bowstrings being drawn and the shouts of Commanders, there was an odd noise, something out of place. It sounded like a quarrel.
“I’ll go first.”
Encrid said as he descended the stairs.
As he descended, he saw the ones arguing in front of the gate.
The gate was open just wide enough for one person to pass through. It was a soldier who worked with Rowena.
“Let me out!”
He shouted.
“Don’t be stupid. If you go out now, you’ll die.”
“I don’t care. I’m fine with dying!”
The soldier yelled, but Milio, who was guarding the gate, couldn’t accept it.
“You idiot.”
“Damn it, Milio, Rowena went out on a scouting mission and hasn’t come back!”
The soldier wasn’t crying, but his voice made it sound like he was.
Milio couldn’t find words to respond. Rowena and the man in front of him were the most famous couple in the city. Their relationship was a flower that bloomed in the darkness of the Demon Realm. And he knew—these two would gladly give their lives for each other if one was in danger.
So, he couldn’t let him go.
Rowena was capable. In a few years, she might even be considered for the Knighthood. She would survive.
“Trust and wait. Rowena is tougher than you are.”
“It’s already past the time she should have returned.”
Milio couldn’t win against this man. Behind him, the subordinates of his loyal friend stood silently.
“Are all of you planning to go together?”
“To support the squad leader’s love.”
The soldier standing right behind him said, the one who had killed two of his Lord’s lackeys who were causing trouble in his domain before coming here. Now, he was a respectable soldier of the Brick City.
It was madness. Clearly madness, but Milio stepped aside.
“The Knights are already holding the front. Circle around to the left.”
“I know.”
The soldier slipped out through the gate.
“Oara!”
When Milio suddenly shouted, the soldiers on the wall stomped their feet in response.
“Oara!”
“I’ll die with a smile on my face!”
The shout tore through the night sky.
The screaming spiders were just one type of the spider monsters. There were also armored spiders, web-shooting spiders, and others. But they couldn’t breach the barrier built by the Knights, standing twenty paces in front of the gate.
And now, someone else joined in.
“Hey, let’s play together!”
It was Oara. She slid down the castle wall, landing gracefully to join her Knights. Just coming down the wall like that was a feat in itself.
She then swiftly moved between the monsters.
“Where do you think you’re going!”
She advanced, drawing her long sword. She ran straight, then curved to the side, slashing as she moved.
Her sword cut through the darkness like a stream of water, forming a continuous, smooth arc.
With a flick of her wrist, the sword drew a line wherever she stepped. Armored spiders, giant spiders—it didn’t matter what part of them touched that line, they were cut through.
Whether it was their belly, head, or shell, nothing could stop her sword. It was clear to anyone watching. If the monsters continued to charge in, she could kill them all by herself.
Moreover, just by occasionally glaring at them, the monsters would suddenly freeze in place.
It was the effect of her overwhelming aura, something Encrid had experienced himself.
Oara was warming up, moving lightly.
The short blonde was just as formidable. Her eyes glowed white.
“Poison, evasive maneuvers.”
She pierced the darkness with her gaze, adjusting their formation. The four Squires scattered to the left and right at the short blonde’s command.
Splat!
Black goo flew through the spot they had just vacated. A spider had spit poison at them.
“Hmph.”
The short blonde’s hand moved swiftly. With a flick of her wrist, a throwing knife flew through the air, piercing the spitting spider’s head.
“Filthy spider bastards.”
Roman, the one wielding the blunt greatsword, stepped out of formation briefly. He then charged forward, swinging his sword.
Boom! Boom!
The sound of explosions echoed as six armored spiders were crushed and shattered by his strikes. Black fluids splattered across the ground.
Meanwhile, Rowena’s lover had made his way outside.
“Hey!”
Oliver, swinging his mace at the far left end of the formation, saw him and shouted.
“I’m going with you.”
Encrid followed him out, speaking as Rem and the others trailed behind. Hearing that, Rowena’s lover looked as if he was about to cry.
“Are you an angel?”
“Shut up, or I’ll throw you back behind the lines.”
Encrid warned calmly, and the soldier fell silent. The plan was to scout only certain areas.
Could they hold out until dawn?
Maybe.
The twin moons cast an ominous red light through the clouds.
Encrid turned around, not thinking much of it. He saw Milio leading some of the troops out.
A Knight could cut down a thousand foes, but their body was just one. While they cut down a hundred, the remaining nine hundred could turn around and do something else.
The Squires, Junior-Knights, and soldiers were there to fill those gaps.
As he thought this and turned his gaze forward, Encrid suddenly felt his hair stand on end.
“Block it!”
Oara’s shout came before he could even understand what he was feeling.
And then—
Ting! Ting! Ting!
There was a noise, followed by something raining down from above.
Encrid sensed the incoming attack by the force and the sound of wind being cut through. Arrows.
But he couldn’t see them clearly. The darkness was like a curtain over his eyes, and the twin moons, obscured by clouds, were of no help.
Dunbachel’s pupils dilated. Her normally oval-shaped pupils expanded to fill her eyes with light.
She could see what they had fired.
They were white arrows, different from those used by humans, as if made from bundled threads, streaking across the sky.
It looked like dozens of meteors splitting apart and falling from above.
Dunbachel reflexively drew her curved blade and crossed it above her head.
Block, deflect, and dodge—simple as that.
“Watch your head.”
Rem reacted too, pulling down the head of a nearby soldier and swinging his axe. Encrid instinctively pulled out his shield.
The arrows struck the shield in his right hand.
Thunk! Thunk!
They weren’t particularly sharp, bouncing off the shield. They were heavy rather than sharp, or at least, that’s how Encrid felt.
Kneeling on one knee, he easily blocked the incoming arrows.
The barrage didn’t stop.
Such an attack couldn’t harm the Squires, Junior-Knights, or Knights.
But the regular soldiers were another story. For them, the arrows alone were a significant threat.
The people close to him were safe with Rem, Dunbachel, and Luagarne around, and the soldiers on the wall could hold out by using the wall as a shield.
But what about those who risked their lives to fill the gaps?
“Milio!”
Encrid shouted, trying to warn him.
He saw one of the white arrows fired by the monsters strike Milio’s head.
Crack!
Milio had thrown himself to protect his subordinate instead of worrying about his own safety.
His helmet caved in, and his eyeball popped out.
His head cracked, and blood splattered.
Not all the arrows had the same power.
But a few of them were lethal.
The monsters were cunning.
Instead of targeting those who were impervious, they aimed at the relatively weaker soldiers.
“You filthy bastards!”
Encrid heard someone shout in anger.
He felt the same.
Milio had been the one who had shown him the most kindness during his time here.
It would be a lie to say he hadn’t grown attached.
And this wasn’t the end.
Suddenly, a pole-like structure rose from within the monster horde.
A person was tied to the top of the pole. A blue stone was also attached to the end—it looked like a firestone.
The white and blue light mixed with the darkness, illuminating those bound to the pole.
“Rowena!”
The soldier who had come with them shouted.
Monsters that even took hostages.
Encrid instinctively knew this wave was different from any before.
So should they stop now? Should they just stand there in shock?
“Rem, Dunbachel, to the left.”
As everyone momentarily froze, Encrid lowered his stance.
Darkness, firestone, hostages—nothing would change if they didn’t act, no matter how shocking it was.
When it was time to fight, they had to fight.
“Damn it.”
Dunbachel muttered as she moved.
Rem was already lowering his stance and advancing ahead of her.
