Chapter 489: What Went Wrong
Huo Ji’an rushed over like a firecracker. Zhouzhou, seeing him, curved her eyebrows and exclaimed with delight, “Little Skinny Pole!”
Huo Ji’an, equally thrilled to see his friend, pulled out candy from his pocket and handed it to her, asking curiously, “Chubby Girl, what are you doing here?”
Zhouzhou, munching on the candy, one cheek puffed up, pointed to Wei Xuhong and said, “I came to my brother’s house for a meal.”
Brother? Huo Ji’an glanced at Wei Xuhong. He wasn’t one of the Qin brothers, so where did this brother come from?
Zhouzhou then explained everything—fights, bad guys, and the money involved. Huo Ji’an, listening, felt dizzy, but understood this was no relative of hers, just someone she met along the way.
He felt relieved immediately. He had thought Chubby Girl had made a new friend.
He looked at Wei Xuhong and, seeing no competition, turned his attention back to Zhouzhou.
“Little Skinny Pole, what are you doing here?” Zhouzhou asked curiously.
“I live here, remember?”
At his words, Zhouzhou looked around and suddenly realized, right, Yu Ze lived there. No wonder it seemed familiar. The night they arrived, it was dark, so she hadn’t recognized it right away.
“Do you live in this building?” Zhouzhou asked, pointing to the place beside her.
Huo Ji’an nodded enthusiastically. “Yes, yes, come on, let’s go to my house for dinner. My dad is cooking too.”
Zhouzhou glanced at Mrs. Wei, hesitant. She had already promised her.
Mrs. Wei looked at Huo Ji’an for a moment and suddenly asked, “Are you Yu Ze’s son?”
At this, Huo Ji’an nodded heavily, lifting his chin with pride. “Yes! My dad is Yu Ze!” Not that previous dad who only worked and attended meetings.
Unaware of the child’s thoughts, Mrs. Wei smiled and said, “I live opposite. We’re neighbors. I once saw you returning home with your dad carrying you.”
It was odd, though. She had never heard Yu Ze had a child. It was as if this child had appeared out of nowhere.
“How about this, I’ll cook a few dishes too. Let’s eat together?”
“I think that’s a good idea,” Zhouzhou nodded first, turning to Huo Ji’an, “Auntie is good at cooking.”
“My dad’s a great cook too,” Huo Ji’an emphasized but agreed nonetheless.
“Come on, Chubby Girl, I’ll take you to see my dad.”
With that, he pulled Zhouzhou along, rushing inside. At the stairway, he stomped his foot, and the sound-activated light above flickered on.
Huo Ji’an pointed at the light, proudly saying, “Chubby Girl, my dad fixed this. It was broken before. He was worried I’d be afraid of the dark, so he fixed it.”
After finishing, he looked eagerly at Zhouzhou. Zhouzhou cooperatively said, “Your dad is really good to you.”
“Of course,” Huo Ji’an, hearing what he wanted, was overjoyed. “Come on, let’s go, dad is still waiting for the soy sauce.”
Zhouzhou looked down and, sure enough, saw a bottle of soy sauce in his hand. She nodded quickly and waved to Wei Xuhong, “Brother, come play with us.”
Wei Xuhong shook his head. “I’m not going. I’m helping my mom cook.”
“No need, no need,” Mrs. Wei hurriedly pushed him forward, “You go play. I can handle it.”
“But…”
“It’s fine,” Mrs. Wei waved him off, “Go play, it’s okay.”

Qin Ze also smiled, “I’ll help. You guys go.”
After thinking for a moment, Wei Xuhong nodded in agreement, “Alright.”
As soon as he finished speaking, Zhouzhou pulled him, rushing upstairs.
The corridor was still narrow and cramped, without an elevator, but the kids didn’t mind. They happily ran all the way home.
Huo Ji’an knocked on the door, shouting, “Dad, I’m back, Chubby Girl is here too.”
Yu Ze, hearing the commotion from the kitchen, came out, wearing an apron and holding a spatula. Seeing Zhouzhou, he was a bit surprised, “Zhouzhou?”
“Hello, Uncle Yu,” Zhouzhou waved her chubby hand, “I came to mooch a meal.”
Seeing the little girl, Yu Ze’s mood lifted. He stepped aside, “Come on in.”
When he saw Wei Xuhong, his face showed surprise again. He had lived here longer and knew him as the neighbor from across the hall.
But how did they end up together?
Seeing his confusion, Zhouzhou quickly explained everything once more. After finishing, she darted to the sofa, “I’m so tired, I’ve said it several times, and I’m hungry.”
Huo Ji’an followed, generously offering his snacks, “Here, Chubby Girl, have some. My dad will finish cooking soon.”
“Okay,” Zhouzhou sat up straight at the sight of food, calling Wei Xuhong over.
Huo Ji’an paused, tilting his head to look at her, a bit unhappy. He felt that Chubby Girl had changed. He was no longer her best friend. She hadn’t even offered him any.
Huo Ji’an crossed his arms, pouting, glaring at them. Zhouzhou, however, didn’t notice, chatting with Wei Xuhong about which snacks were good, making Huo Ji’an’s gaze even more resentful.
Yu Ze, seeing this, couldn’t help but laugh. This expression, why did it look like a scorned woman?
Huo Ji’an was angry but said nothing, just stared at them, waiting for them to notice. Yu Ze didn’t disturb them either, chuckling as he returned to the kitchen, letting the kids play.
One minute passed. Two minutes passed. Five minutes passed.
Huo Ji’an, filled with anger, his still somewhat thin face now puffed up like a pufferfish.
Zhouzhou, turning her head, was startled by this sight. She poked his face with her chubby hand, curiously asking, “Little Skinny Pole, what’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell? I brought acupuncture needles, do you want a few pricks?”
What?
Huo Ji’an’s eyes widened. She not only didn’t care about him, but she also wanted to prick him with needles! She had changed, she was no longer his Chubby Girl!
This time, Zhouzhou not only failed to console him but made him even angrier. Huo Ji’an sprang up, exclaiming, “I’m mad now! I can’t be consoled!”
He then dashed to the kitchen, hiding behind the wall. But he couldn’t help but stole a glance at Zhouzhou.
Their eyes met, and he was startled. They stared at each other for a few seconds, and Huo Ji’an pouted and huffed loudly.
Zhouzhou, bewildered, scratched her head and ran to him, asking, “Little Skinny Pole, why are you mad?”
“You made me mad!” Huo Ji’an snapped, saying only this.
Zhouzhou looked at him and sighed.
Men’s hearts are like needles at the bottom of the sea, so hard to understand.
Alright, let’s soothe him then. “I’m sorry, I was wrong.”
Huo Ji’an’s expression softened but he still lifted his chin haughtily, “What did you do wrong?”
Zhouzhou helplessly said, “Everything.”
Huo Ji’an was unsatisfied and angrier, “You’re just brushing me off!”
With that, he stomped his foot and stormed into the room.
Zhouzhou was even more confused.
Are all boys’ hearts this hard to understand?
She squatted down, holding her face in distress, her brows tightly knit in puzzlement.
Yu Ze looked back and, seeing this, almost laughed out loud. It looked like a husband who had been kicked out by his wife and didn’t know what he did wrong.
