Chapter 614: Hungry and Begging
This was how this beggar lost his legs, and thus, he resented every able-bodied person. He wished for everyone to endure the same suffering as he did.
Why should they have sound limbs when he was determined to see them dragging crippled bodies, enduring scorn as they begged?
The bystanders kept a close watch on Zhouzhou and the others. Though the distance blurred their faces, the children, especially unwanted ones, seemed perfect for their purposes. Both men curled their lips into sinister smiles.
“Keep a good eye on them. See if they have any family,” one instructed. If they did, their faces would need to be marred beyond recognition.
“Yes,” the beggar nodded eagerly, the thought of these children soon sharing his fate bringing him perverse satisfaction.
At that moment, Zhouzhou slept soundly, a golden mountain appearing in her dreams, rushing towards her. She couldn’t help but laugh joyfully in her sleep.
“Ancestral Master,” the evil spirit poked its head out from the Soul Nourishing Talisman, watching the beggars leave. “Should we tell Little Celestial Master to keep away from those people?”
“No need,” Ancestral Master replied nonchalantly, clipping his nails. “They’re just bringing money to us. No reason to avoid them.”
Indeed. When evildoers encountered Little Celestial Master, it was uncertain who would suffer, but it certainly wouldn’t be Little Celestial Master.
They couldn’t have chosen worse targets, akin to an old tortoise hanging itself, weary of life. The evil spirit anticipated an entertaining show.
Unaware of the danger, Zhouzhou had spent the night sleeping on a park bench. At dawn, a sudden cry startled her awake. She sat up quickly, “What’s wrong?”
Qin Bei lay flat on the ground, having hit his breaking point. Hearing Zhouzhou, he wailed, “Why is the ground so hard?”
Zhouzhou blinked, thinking where had he seen soft ground? Qin Bei, exhausted and hungry, had been bitten by mosquitoes all night and had rolled off the bench. The child couldn’t hold back his tears anymore.
“Zhouzhou, being a beggar is so hard!” he sobbed.
Zhouzhou squatted beside him, supporting her chubby face with her hands, “Is it harder than school?”
Qin Bei’s cries halted. He pushed himself up, “Not really.” School was worse. Poor grades meant beatings and scoldings, a double assault on body and mind. Begging was only physically tough, but this was too hard.
Qin Bei’s lips trembled as he fought back tears. He refused to go back to school.
Zhouzhou sighed. Earning ten thousand from Grandma was proving difficult. But she wasn’t in a rush; seeing Qin Bei’s state, he wouldn’t last much longer. She smiled, helped him up, dusted him off, and then hit him with another blow.
“Sixth Brother, hungry, want food.”
Qin Bei’s face twisted in despair, remembering Zhouzhou’s appetite. He never should have offered to take care of her. But he couldn’t go back on his word now.
“Alright, I’ll go beg for food,” he said, steeling himself.
“Sixth Brother is the best,” Zhouzhou beamed, eyes full of expectation.
Buoyed by her praise, Qin Bei felt a surge of determination. He couldn’t disappoint her. If he couldn’t beg for food, he would collect scraps! He was, after all, her most capable brother.
Jinbao would have rolled his eyes at the naivety. Her compliments couldn’t be trusted, but Qin Bei didn’t know this. Feeling proud, he marched off with his bowl, ready to start a new day of begging.
Zhouzhou and Qin Er quickly followed, worried he might end up sold instead of fed.
The summer sun rose early, and many breakfast stalls were already open. Qin Bei, now dirty and disheveled, looked every bit the part of a beggar. His pitiful demeanor softened a vendor’s heart, earning him two buns.
The aroma made his mouth water. Just as he was about to eat, a small bowl appeared before him. Zhouzhou’s bright eyes were fixed on him. Remembering her faith in him, Qin Bei gritted his teeth and handed over the buns.
“Thank you, brother. You’re the best!” Zhouzhou showered him with praise, sharing the buns among them.
Qin Bei cherished his half bun, eating it in tiny bites. But before he could finish, Zhouzhou’s bowl reappeared.
“Sixth Brother, still hungry.”

He sighed, quickly stuffing the remaining bun into his mouth. “Let’s keep begging.”
“Okay, I’ll help you, Sixth Brother,” Zhouzhou offered.
Qin Bei felt tears of gratitude. Zhouzhou was so considerate. But soon, he regretted it. No matter how much she ate, she was never full. Her little belly was like a bottomless pit. His begging couldn’t keep up with her eating.
“Brother, am I eating too much?” Zhouzhou asked, embarrassed.
“No,” Qin Bei insisted stubbornly. As her most capable brother, he couldn’t admit defeat.
“Wait here. I’ll get a job and make sure you have meat to eat.”
“Sixth Brother, you’re amazing!” Zhouzhou’s eyes sparkled.
Qin Er glanced at him with a look of disdain. Idiot.
He’s only a kindergarten graduate, and he thinks he can get a job? Who would hire him?
Qin Bei was pondering the same problem when, suddenly, something caught his eye. His face lit up.
“I’ve got an idea!” he exclaimed, pulling Zhouzhou along as they dashed to the entrance of an internet café. Puffing out his chest with determination, he declared, “I can be a gaming companion!”
He had previously hired gaming companions to play with him, paying them a hundred yuan an hour. It was easy money.
Hearing this, Zhouzhou’s eyes widened in admiration. She counted on her fingers—they had spent all day collecting bags of bottles and only earned thirty yuan. But Sixth Brother could make a hundred in just one hour? Amazing!
Qin Er, however, frowned. So, he’s been spending a hundred yuan an hour on gaming?
If only he’d known there was such a cash cow at home! He wouldn’t have bothered running a stall; he could’ve just played games with Qin Bei and effortlessly made thousands a month.
The thought of all that money going to someone else made Qin Dafu feel as if he had lost it himself. He was fuming!
Seeing Zhouzhou’s admiring gaze, Qin Bei felt even more invigorated and confidently strode into the café.
But no sooner had two minutes passed than he was kicked right back out.
“Shoo, shoo! Where did this little brat come from? We’re a proper establishment–no minors allowed!”
Qin Bei, indignant, protested, “Why not?”
The café manager rolled his eyes. “Because you can’t even log into a game! How are you supposed to be a companion?”
Games nowadays had strict regulations—everything required verification.
Without another word, the manager shut the door in his face.
Zhouzhou’s excitement deflated immediately. She looked at Qin Bei, puzzled. “Sixth Brother, then how did you play games before?”
Qin Bei’s confidence faltered, and he muttered sheepishly, “I paid someone to verify my account.”
Qin Er: “…”
This little spendthrift!
