Chapter 825: Little chubby girl: Why Not Choose Me?
Ye Lingfeng stood at the door, hesitant and unsure whether to enter or make a quick escape. He was already contemplating how to make a run for it. He didn’t want to risk getting chased down by his daughter during the New Year.
But before he could act, Zhouzhou noticed him. Her eyes lit up instantly. “Daddy!”
As his little girl ran toward him, Ye Lingfeng cursed the general in his heart again. Why did he have to come between him and his daughter? They were doing just fine!
Zhouzhou, unaware of her father’s thoughts, ran and jumped into his arms, wrapping her arms around his neck tightly and rubbing her face against him lovingly.
“Daddy! Daddy!” Zhouzhou was overjoyed. She had been worried that he wouldn’t make it back in time, but here he was, just as he had promised.
Ye Lingfeng hugged her back, but before Zhouzhou could remember anything about the Frost Sword, he quickly confessed, pretending to sound pitiful. “Zhouzhou, Daddy hurt his hand.”
“What?”
Zhouzhou’s expression immediately turned anxious. She jumped out of his arms and clung to his hand, checking it nervously. “What happened? Let me see!”
Ye Lingfeng spread his hand, showing her the nearly healed wound.
Feigning confusion, he asked, “Hmm, why is there blood on this sword?”
Zhouzhou looked at the sword and indeed saw a trace of blood on its blade. Then, to her surprise, the blood disappeared as if absorbed by the sword, leaving a faint flash of white light that fell onto Ye Lingfeng.
Zhouzhou had seen this before–her Peachwood Sword behaved the same way. This was a sign of the sword recognizing its master.
Could it be that the Frost Sword had chosen her father as its master?
Zhouzhou, confused, reached out to grab the sword, but it avoided her and returned to Ye Lingfeng’s hand. At that moment, she knew her guess was correct.
Ye Lingfeng anxiously watched her reaction, ready to shift the blame at the first sign of trouble. After all, it wasn’t like he had asked for this.
The general, reading his thoughts, nearly stumbled in disbelief. A grown man, and a father at that, so terrified of a little girl? Ridiculous!
Well, not really. This was his only daughter, after all. And besides, he wasn’t her only dad–there was still Qin Lie. If he upset her, wouldn’t that just make things easier for him? No way he was going to do something foolish like that!
Deciding to play dumb, Ye Lingfeng saw Zhouzhou’s quivering lips and teary eyes. Feigning ignorance, he asked, “What’s wrong?”
Zhouzhou sniffed and swallowed her tears, a bit dejected. “It’s nothing. The Frost Sword just chose Daddy as its master.”
She touched the Frost Sword, feeling a bit wronged. Why didn’t it choose her? Wasn’t she good enough?
“What?” Ye Lingfeng exaggerated his reaction so much that even Qin Lie turned to look at him.
Ignoring Qin Lie, Ye Lingfeng continued his act. “How could this happen? This isn’t right! I was planning to this to you as a gift. I can’t keep it. Here, Zhouzhou, it’s yours.”
He held out the Frost Sword to her.
Zhouzhou stepped back, shaking her head. “No, it already has a master now. If I hold it, it might get mad and hurt me.”
Well, at least it had chosen Daddy and not someone else. That thought gave her some comfort. She took a deep breath and waved her little hand, saying, “It’s okay! What’s mine is Daddy’s. I already have my Peachwood Sword, so I don’t need this one.”
She pulled out her mini Peachwood Sword, custom-made by her senior brother.
Who cared about the Frost Sword? She had her own sword!
With that thought, Zhouzhou showed off a little routine, looking like a small, round ball dancing. It was adorable, though not at all cool or heroic.
The Frost Sword, witnessing this, praised its previous owner for being wise. Imagine the embarrassment if this chubby girl had wielded it. It was much happier being with those long legs (Ye Lingfeng).
Ye Lingfeng, on the other hand, wished he could throw the sword away. It had almost ruined his relationship with his daughter!

Luckily, Zhouzhou was understanding and didn’t hold a grudge. She put away her Peachwood Sword, grabbed Ye Lingfeng’s hand, and pulled him toward the living room.
“Grandma, Grandpa, Daddy’s back!” she cheered.
Ye Lingfeng nodded toward them as well.
Seeing him covered in snow and frost, Grandma Qin’s heart ached. “Hurry upstairs and take a hot bath. Dinner’s ready.”
They had been waiting for him. Even Zhouzhou hadn’t touched her chopsticks yet, only nibbling on some nuts and fruits to hold her over.
Looking at the table full of delicious food, Ye Lingfeng’s gaze softened. He patted Zhouzhou’s little head with a smile of relief before heading upstairs for a quick shower and change of clothes.
By the time he returned, Zhouzhou was already in her seat, waving at him excitedly. “Daddy, all this food was made by Aunties and Grandma, and I helped wash the vegetables too!”
She puffed out her little chest proudly. This time, Grandma hadn’t let her wash the fruit. After all, they didn’t want to end up eating just the seeds.
This was the first proper New Year’s celebration Ye Lingfeng had in years. Back when he was with the Fourth Bureau, he was always busy. Even eating dumplings counted as celebrating.
Sitting down, he looked at Grandma Qin and sincerely said, “Thank you.”
“This child, no need to be so formal.” Grandma Qin waved it off. “We’re all family. If anything, we should be thanking you for giving us such an adorable Zhouzhou.”
Hearing this, Zhouzhou immediately put down her chopsticks, cupped her chubby face, and nodded. “That’s right! I’m the cutest!”
She had gained a little weight, but Grandma said that just made her more lovable. The little chubby girl was feeling quite smug, and the adults couldn’t help but laugh.
Zhouzhou giggled along with them, looking a bit silly.
Even Qin Lie smiled warmly as he stroked her little fortune hair with a gaze full of affection.
Grandpa Qin looked at the scene and said, “Come on, let’s eat.”
“Okay, let’s eat!” Zhouzhou quickly picked up her chopsticks and placed a big drumstick on Ye Lingfeng’s plate. “Daddy worked hard. Daddy, eat!”
For once, Qin Lie didn’t feel jealous. After all, Ye Lingfeng had been on a tough mission this time.
Seeing this, Ye Lingfeng didn’t even feel like bragging anymore. Fine, it’s New Year’s–he could call a truce for one night.
But starting tomorrow, the battle for Zhouzhou’s affection would begin again!
Qin Lie caught his thought at a glance. Raising his glass, he clinked it against Ye Lingfeng’s and downed his drink.
How convenient. He was thinking the same thing.
