Chapter 939: Who Dissects Whom, We’ll See
Zhouzhou could see spirits. She hadn’t expected her older brother to see them too, though he hadn’t opened his “third eye.” Pondering this, Zhouzhou looked at Jing Bai with curiosity.
Qin Ren chuckled and patted her head. “It’s different.”
“How so?” Zhouzhou asked, blinking.
After a moment, Qin Ren explained, “It’s not real ‘talking.’ It’s using knowledge to investigate the cause of death. That’s science.”
Hearing this, Zhouzhou puffed out her cheeks, crossing her chubby little arms and glaring at him. This was science too, in her opinion! It was he who said so!
Adults just loved to lie to kids.
Amused by her expression, Qin Ren pinched her cheek. “Alright, I misspoke. You’re both using science.”
“That’s more like it.” Zhouzhou huffed, grabbing Jing Bai’s hand. She beamed, “So, brother, we’re colleagues now!”
The idea of being a forensic scientist sounded pretty cool.
Her small, warm hands, like a little ball of fire, clutched Jing Bai’s cool ones tightly. He felt a bit uncomfortable and reflexively tried to pull away, but Zhouzhou held on firmly.
Qin Xu hadn’t expected them to know each other but, understanding Jing Bai’s background, was more curious about how his nephew got to know him–and why they came together. Qin Xu’s gaze sharpened.
Qin Ren noticed and inclined his head. “Uncle.”
Qin Xu acknowledged him but looked over at Jing Bai. “Let’s begin.”
Jing Bai didn’t respond, stepping forward quietly, with Zhouzhou happily following.
Seeing this, Qin Xu’s eyelid twitched, pulling Zhouzhou back. “You should stay out here.”
“Why?” Zhouzhou looked at him, puzzled.
Why? If his mom knew he let her watch an autopsy, she’d probably scold him fiercely.
“Because you’re too young.” He made up an excuse.
Zhouzhou didn’t buy it. She turned to Qin Dong. “Third Brother isn’t much older than me!”
Before Qin Xu could respond, Zhouzhou continued, “Uncle, don’t lie to me. Third Brother watched his first autopsy at my age. Grandma told me herself.”
Today, she was determined to watch! She was really curious how her brother, without a third eye, could “talk” to the dead.
Caught off guard, Qin Xu turned to Qin Lie, hoping he’d convince his “daddy’s girl” daughter. However, Qin Lie said, “Let her go.”
In Zhouzhou’s eyes, a body was just an empty shell–no different from an object. As for fear? She’d faced fierce villains and ferocious spirits before, and they all ended up subdued by her. She was the one that even ghosts feared.
Qin Xu sighed, knowing he’d face his sister-in-law’s wrath if she found out.
With Qin Lie’s encouragement, Qin Xu finally relented. “Fine. Go on in.”
Zhouzhou’s face lit up. “Thank you, Uncle!” She then joyfully pulled Jing Bai along into the morgue.
As they entered, many spirits floated in the air. She immediately spotted an elderly man’s spirit standing before them.
Just as she was about to speak, she saw Jing Bai head straight to a cabinet, pulling out a body–the old man’s.
“Eh?” Zhouzhou muttered, realizing that her brother might not see the elderly man’s spirit. Wasn’t he supposed to talk to him? So strange.
Before she could follow, Qin Dong handed her gloves and a mask.

Zhouzhou glanced at him and smiled, eyes curving. Qin Dong patted her head and led her to the opposite side of the bed, where she had a clear view without interfering with Jing Bai’s work.
The man nearby, however, started shouting, “I’ll report this! Letting a murderer dissect my dad’s body? Just wait–I’m going to sue all of you!”
Unfazed, Qin Xu gave him a side-eye. “Go ahead.”
Startled by the response, the man cursed under his breath, muttering with the woman next to him as they left, throwing Qin Xu a venomous glare on their way out.
“Is that going to be a problem?” Qin Lie asked.
Qin Xu shook his head. “No. We’ve confirmed Jing Bai had no chance to harm him. After they parted, he went straight home, and Zhouzhou took the needle he had. He didn’t have the opportunity.”
“And if he’d done it, he wouldn’t have denied it,” Qin Xu added, echoing Zhao Xinghua’s exact words.
Zhao Xinghua?
Qin Lie remained calm, confirming Qin Xu’s suspicion that he already knew of Ye Lingfeng’s identity–likely from Zhouzhou’s involvement with the Fourth Bureau.
Then Qin Xu lowered his voice, glancing around to ensure no one was listening. “Do you know about Little Ren’s assignment?”
Qin Lie nodded without hesitation. “Yes.”
Qin Xu’s brows furrowed. “And your brother and sister-in-law?”
“They know too.”
So they all agreed to it? Qin Xu’s tone grew urgent. “Little Ren is a scholar, not a fighter. His role must be research-oriented.”
He quickly pieced it together. “That would make him colleagues with Jing Bai. Do you know who he really is?”
Qin Lie genuinely didn’t. He only knew about the Fourth Bureau because of Zhouzhou’s involvement and had met Chen Tuo and others but never pried into further details.
Seeing his expression, Qin Xu felt speechless. How could they agree so easily? What if Little Ren actually got hurt one day?
He handed Qin Lie a file. “Read it for yourself.”
Normally, these classified Fourth Bureau records were inaccessible, but since the situation involved both Jing Bai and Zhouzhou, Zhao Xinghua had granted him access. The file detailed that Jing Bai had been raised in an overseas lab, fed on nutritional fluids instead of baby formula, and injected with experimental agents.
Without any human interaction growing up, Jing Bai developed no empathy–only a fascination with human anatomy. At eighteen, he killed all the researchers in his lab, dissecting them in the process. It was during a mission that Zhao Xinghua’s team found him and brought him to the Fourth Bureau.
While he no longer killed without reason, there was always a chance.
With a disapproving look, Qin Xu told Qin Lie, “This was a reckless decision.”
After reading, Qin Lie’s expression remained calm, and he replied with a hint of amusement, “Do you think he’s someone who could just be butchered at will?”
