Chapter 952: If It Were You, Would You Abandon Me?
Zhouzhou nodded and followed along. When she returned to the break room after finishing her tasks, she found everyone’s faces devoid of smiles. Dr. Wang’s bed had already been taken by someone else, and his belongings were on the table–just a phone and a wallet. Zhouzhou recognized the wallet; he had shown her the pictures inside, which featured him and his wife.
Dr. Wang’s death had hit everyone hard. He was a comrade who shared meals and living quarters with them, now fallen. Everyone was reminded of their own mortality, contemplating when they too might lie beneath a white cloth–perhaps tomorrow, or even in the next moment.
Zhouzhou felt a wave of depression wash over her. After a few seconds, she suddenly grabbed her phone and dashed outside. It was night; the patients were temporarily stabilized, and the doctors could finally get some rest.
Chen Tuo was reporting to Ye Lingfeng when he spotted a small figure running past. “Oh, isn’t that Zhouzhou? Where is she going?” he exclaimed in surprise.
Ye Lingfeng glanced at her departing figure and said, “It’s nothing; you continue.”
“Oh, okay.” With that, Chen Tuo didn’t think much of it and continued with his report.
Meanwhile, Zhouzhou ran to a corner, spotting Dr. Wang, who had just realized what had happened. She waved at him. “Uncle Wang!”
Dr. Wang was sitting there in a daze. Throughout the day, he had drifted through the bodies of his colleagues and patients, unaware that he had already died. He had floated around aimlessly, unsure of what to do. Hearing someone call his name startled him, and he instinctively looked up.
Upon seeing Zhouzhou, he was momentarily taken aback. “You can see me?” he asked, astonished.
“Yeah!” Zhouzhou nodded vigorously. “Uncle Wang, do you have any wishes? I can help!”
Dr. Wang thought for a moment and looked around. “I wish this plague would end quickly so everyone can recover soon.”
Zhouzhou’s eyes welled up; she clenched her little fist. “It will definitely happen!”
“I believe so too.” Dr. Wang smiled at her but then quickly added, “Zhouzhou, if you have time, could you check on my wife? She’s pregnant.”
“Sure,” Zhouzhou nodded. “Uncle Wang, I can let you talk to her on the phone. Do you want to talk to her?”
Dr. Wang’s eyes lit up. “Yes!”
Zhouzhou placed a talisman on him, and Dr. Wang reached for his phone. This time, he actually grasped it. It was the first time since the morning that he had touched something solid. He glanced at Zhouzhou again, smiling with gratitude.
He quickly dialed the top contact on his phone, and it was answered almost immediately. “Hello?” came a gentle voice.
Dr. Wang’s eyes turned red. He took a deep breath and tried to sound casual. “It’s me.”
Mrs. Wang responded with a hint of confusion. “Of course, I know it’s you. How are you doing over there? Feeling down?”
“No, I’m feeling great! I met Lu Xue.”
She knew about his first girlfriend; they had fought about it before. Dr. Wang closed his eyes, steeling himself as he continued, “I’ve realized I still had a feeling for her. We’re together now, so you should terminate the pregnancy. I don’t want her to be a stepmother.”
On the other end, there was a heavy silence for several seconds, and Dr. Wang’s heart tightened painfully. After a few minutes, a choked sob erupted from the line. “Wang Dong, you bastard!”
With that, she hung up. Wang Dong stared blankly at the disconnected call, suddenly feeling all his strength drain away. He slumped against the wall, burying his face in his knees, his shoulders shaking slightly.
Zhouzhou looked at him, puzzled. “Uncle Wang, why are you putting yourself down?”
What Lu Xue? There was no one by that name here, and he had been too busy to even mention anything else but his wife during his free time, expressing his excitement about becoming a father. Why would he want her to terminate the pregnancy?
Dr. Wang forced a bitter smile. “I’m no longer here. How can she raise the child alone? Being a single mother is tough. Her health isn’t good, and she’s soft-hearted; she’ll be easily bullied…”
His voice choked at this point. He had promised to protect her and never let her suffer again. Yet now, the person causing her distress was him. He knew exactly what would hurt her, yet he was pouring salt into her wounds.
Tears streamed down his face.
Zhouzhou murmured, “Uncle Wang…”
Dr. Wang smiled at her, “Zhouzhou, there’s no need to say more. I just don’t want to burden her anymore. It’s getting late; you should go rest. Once this mess is over, could you check on her for me?”

With that, he drifted away. Zhouzhou didn’t chase after him, instead turning her gaze to a spot nearby.
Ye Lingfeng was standing there. She ran over and hugged his leg, mumbling, “Daddy.”
Ye Lingfeng gently patted her head. “Come on, it’s time for bed.”
“Okay.” Zhouzhou obediently took his hand and headed back to the break room. Suddenly remembering something, she asked, “Daddy, if you were Uncle Wang, would you abandon me?”
Ye Lingfeng considered for a moment and said, “Yes.”
He continued, “Because compared to an unborn child, your mother is more important.”
Zhouzhou understood this and felt a bit sorry for the unborn child. She drooped her head, feeling disheartened.
Ye Lingfeng added, “But I think your mother wouldn’t give you up; she wouldn’t be able to bear it.”
Hearing this, Zhouzhou finally perked up again. “Yeah! Mommy is very strong!”
But she wondered how Dr. Wang’s wife would choose. Regardless of her choice, there was no right or wrong.
With little time for sadness, Zhouzhou collapsed onto her bed and quickly fell asleep. Ye Lingfeng looked at the imprint of the mask on her face and felt a pang of sorrow. The little girl had a chubby face, making the marks even more pronounced. He hesitated to touch her, afraid of hurting her, and instead held her as he fell asleep.
The next day, after completing acupuncture for the patients, Zhouzhou rushed to find Qin Ren and Jing Bai. “Big Brother, Brother, have you figured out what’s going on?”
It was crucial to resolve the root cause; otherwise, more people would be in danger.
Qin Ren had just printed a report. Looking at the data, his expression turned cold. “I’ve seen this kind of virus before.”
