Chapter 999: Please Enter the Trap
The “bad guys” here?
The chief froze for a moment, looking confused, and asked, “What do you mean?”
“Those bad guys who killed so many uncles and aunties,” Zhouzhou replied.
What?!
The chief was even more bewildered now. He looked up at Qin Xu, seeking clarification.
Qin Xu took a deep breath, slowly exhaling three words: “The former chief.”
Hearing this, the chief’s pupils shrank.
He had originally been the deputy chief, and he had worked with the former chief for many years. After the incident, he was promoted to chief. Even so, he felt no sense of excitement. Regardless of which position he held—whether it was the chief or the deputy—the goal remained the same: solving cases.
Moreover, the former chief had been a close friend of his. He still remembered vividly the tragedy of the former chief and his team being wiped out. It was a wound in his heart that had never healed.
But now, what were they trying to say? Why were they talking about “bad guys” in their precinct?
A thought crossed his mind, and his eyes sharpened. He asked, “Does our department have a mole from Lei Dao’s side?”
Lei Dao—the person the former chief’s team had been hunting, the one who had caused their deaths. Lei Dao had long been active in the border areas, notorious for smuggling. Known as “Brother Dao” in the underworld, his influence had only grown.
“Yes,” Qin Xu nodded.
The chief clenched his fists, his knuckles cracking. He gritted his teeth and squeezed out a few words through them: “Who?”
Who was the one who had caused the death of their department’s most elite officers?
Qin Xu paused for a moment before uttering a name: “Niu Wei.”
What!
The chief’s eyes widened, and his expression was one of utter disbelief. “How could it be him?!”
Niu Wei was the most honest person in their department! Moreover, he was the former chief’s disciple!
When Niu Wei had first come to the department, the former chief had recognized his exceptional ability and, out of admiration, had taken him under his wing. He had personally trained him.
Niu Wei had proven himself, repeatedly solving difficult cases. He had even once been shot while apprehending a criminal, and though the injury had not fully healed, he had returned to work immediately. Among all the officers in the department, he was the most dedicated, never complaining even during overtime work, especially during the holidays.
How could someone like him possibly be a mole?
The chief furrowed his brows tightly. “Are you sure? Is there any evidence?”
Qin Xu turned to Zhouzhou.
Zhouzhou said, “The bloodthirsty aura on the uncles and aunties points to him. Also, his virtue has been broken.”
Everyone in this precinct had both virtue and bloodthirsty aura on them. Those with virtue were because they had caught bad guys, while those with bloodthirsty aura had killed criminals, for the world still has the law of life and death.
However, even though killing bad guys would bring some bloodthirsty aura, it wouldn’t have too much of an impact, as long as they had virtue to protect them.
But if someone got blood on their hands that shouldn’t have been spilled, their virtue would be shattered.
The chief didn’t understand metaphysical concepts, but Zhouzhou explained it clearly enough that he could roughly grasp it. However…
“This explanation wouldn’t stand up in court. The court deals with science.”

Zhouzhou puffed out her cheeks and retorted, “The end of science is metaphysics, science and metaphysics are one!”
The chief’s lips twitched, and he nodded awkwardly, “Mm, right, right, but science is still developing, it’s not perfect yet, and there are still discrepancies.”
He couldn’t very well bring Zhouzhou’s metaphysical reasoning into a court of law, where the judge wouldn’t see any of the so-called bloodthirsty aura or virtue.
Zhouzhou frowned upon hearing this.
At that moment, Qin Xu said, “Don’t worry, we’ll definitely find it.”
“We’ve caught Lei Dao so many times, and he’s escaped so many times. Every time he sent a message, he left evidence behind.”
“If we can’t find the evidence…” His eyes narrowed. “Then we’ll have to take the ‘Please Enter the Trap’ approach.”
The chief thought for a moment and nodded. “Alright, then you handle the investigation.”
“Yes,” Qin Xu replied, nodding.
Zhouzhou, who had been standing beside them, tilted her head curiously. “Second Uncle, what does ‘Please Enter the Trap’ mean?”
Qin Xu briefly explained it to her, but as a little illiterate, Zhouzhou didn’t fully understand and refused to admit it. She waved her little chubby hand and said, “Mm, I get it, I already knew! I was just testing you, Uncle!”
Upon hearing this, Qin Xu couldn’t help but smile, though he didn’t point out her little fib. He decided to let her save face, watching her and curiously asking, “Why aren’t you braiding your Fortune Hair anymore?”
Zhouzhou’s hair was usually styled into two ponytails, but now, it was left untied, and he couldn’t quite get used to it.
Zhouzhou immediately pouted and said gloomily, “Daddy said that my Fortune Hair is too distinctive, and people will recognize me too easily.”
Ah, so that’s why.
Qin Xu nodded in realization. “That makes sense.”
She had started taking on missions now, so it was wise to be cautious and stay low-key.
Zhouzhou sighed heavily and looked dejected.
She then patted Qin Xu’s leg and said, “Uncle, whether I get rich or not all depends on you!”
She was determined to prove that even without her signature Fortune Hair, she could still make lots of money!
Qin Xu was amused by her antics and squeezed her cheek. He glanced outside, and his smile faded.
“I’m going out for a bit,” he said to the chief.
The chief nodded, his face full of fatigue.
If it really was Niu Wei, how could he face the former chief again?
While it would take time to gather evidence, Zhouzhou stayed by Qin Xu’s side for a while, but soon grew restless. She took out a book from her Qiankun bag and began reading.
She accidentally found a sheet of paper in the middle of the book.
“Hmm?” she murmured, and upon looking at it, she saw that it was filled with questions. Her face broke into a grin. It had to be from her big brother!
Her big brother would be a great teacher if he ever couldn’t find a job.
Zhouzhou grabbed a pencil and began working on the exercises.
By the time Qin Xu got off work, Zhouzhou had already completed several pages of exercises.
She smiled at him and took his hand, ready to head home. Just as they were leaving, she glanced in Niu Wei’s direction and saw that he was still working overtime. Her little brow furrowed slightly.
Once they got into the car, she couldn’t help but ask, “Uncle, why is that man doing this? He doesn’t seem that bad.”
Qin Xu shook his head.
He didn’t know either.
He had suspected many people, but never Niu Wei.
Seeing his reaction, Zhouzhou didn’t ask any further.
Days passed, and Qin Xu still hadn’t found much information regarding evidence. Niu Wei had been personally trained by the former chief, and he was highly skilled in counter-surveillance. If he had done something wrong, he would certainly have been careful to leave as little evidence as possible.
That left only one last method.
That day, as soon as Qin Xu arrived at work, he instructed his team to change their clothes.
“Where are we going, Boss?” one of the team members asked, confused.
“To catch Lei Dao. Someone saw him,” Qin Xu replied.
“Lei Dao?” Upon hearing his name, the team members clenched their teeth, their movements speeding up as they changed into their gear. “This time, we’re not letting him slip away!”
The others nodded in agreement. They had to make sure that Lei Dao paid for what he did, to ensure the former chief’s soul could rest in peace!
Niu Wei, head lowered, didn’t say anything. After changing clothes, he spoke up, “Boss, I need to use the bathroom.”
“Go ahead.”
In the bathroom, Niu Wei quickly took out his phone and typed a message.
His finger hovered over the send button for a moment before, with his eyes closed, he pressed it down.
However, when he opened his eyes again, he saw an exclamation mark on the screen.
The message had failed to send.
His heart sank.
At that moment, a soft, sticky voice came from behind him.
“Uncle, does ‘the trap’ mean the bathroom?”
