Chapter 131: Father’s Duties
When Gray entered the kitchen, his eyes darkened for a moment.

‘Am I sleeping right now?’

There sat the one whose face had appeared in his mind countless times today. The bastard who had humiliated him. The bastard he was supposed to crush.

Now sat at his table, eating his mother’s food with gusto.

“Son, don’t just stand in the doorway, come on in. Your friend stopped by today to give you the lecture notes from the Academy, so don’t forget to thank him.”

His mother’s gentle voice, as if everything was fine, echoed in his ears.

“Yes Gray, come on in, I brought you everything from today’s lectures.”

Rain confirmed his mother’s words and held out his notebook to him.

‘Lectures…? Academy…?’

Gray stared dumbly at the outstretched notebook. But soon his face creased.

‘Bullshit.’

He had run away from the Academy hospital and was now in hiding, what classes and lectures could we talk about?

He didn’t realize what, but obviously the bastard was once again looking for trouble with him.

“About the thanks… there’s no need. Your beautiful mother has already done enough.”

Rain smiled at Evelyn.

“Fufu, you don’t need to be so polite… I only made you a couple of very ordinary dishes. They’re not that good.”

“Not that good? If it’s ‘not that good’, then what is the food from the chef from my estate that we invited from the capital? Should I just fire him?”

“C-c-certainly not! You don’t have to…! He may have a family or kids to take care of…if he loses his job over this stupidity…I won’t be able to forgive myself…”

“I’m kidding.”

“Ah… ah? How mean!”

Seeing them chatting sweetly right in front of him, Gray’s teeth clenched. Right now, he really did feel like a third wheel.

As soon as his shock passed, rage quickly boiled up in him towards the smiling bastard.

How dare he come into MY house? Eat MY food? Sit in MY seat?

And he didn’t just do it, he felt like he was at his own home! No, he felt like a complete master of this place!

Gritting his teeth, Gray uttered.

“…This is my seat.”

Rain only raised an eyebrow at his words.

“Really? I’m sorry, it just seemed to fit me quite well.”

Gray moved forward to grab him and throw him out of here, but the unexpected person intervened.

“Gray, don’t be so rude. It’s just a seat. Didn’t I teach you as a child that you should share with your friends?”

‘…Did my mother just side with that bastard?’

In disbelief, his gaze fell on a smirking Rain.

For some unknown reason right now, Gray remembered a phrase Rain had said to him before the Finals.

“My credo? It’s simple. Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds that you plant.”

Somehow that only made him angrier.

He directed his gaze filled with deep murderous intent at Rain.

But the man, as if he were a father scolding a capricious son, waved him off carelessly, turning again to his mother.

“Where was I? Oh, yes, Evelyn, your…”

Gray’s fists clenched, his voice low and rough.

“Rain, you fucking bastard, what do you think you’re doing…”

As his rage peaked, his hands reached for the huge sword behind his back. Before he could pull it out, however, his mother reprimanded him again.

“Gray! Where are your manners?”

He froze. It was the first time his kind mother had ever raised her voice at him.

“Your friend came all this way and waited for you for hours to hand you lectures from the Academy, and you show him such a scary face? That’s not how I raised you…”

“Mom, he’s not my friend!”

He shouted in impotent rage, his mood plummeting to rock bottom.

Things hadn’t gone according to his plans since this morning: first some cheap whore had gotten conceited and refused to serve him, then Eliana had ignored his calls, and after that he’d spent the entire day without being able to charge his bloodline.

The current situation was the last straw. Now he felt that one more word and he might explode.

Throwing Rain a deep murderous look, he climbed the stairs to the second floor and slammed the door loudly behind him.

Thud!

Rain looked after him without much emotion in his eyes.

‘Gray, oh Gray, you were only right about one thing today.’

His eyes slowly shifted to Evelyn.

I’m really not your friend.’

***

“I’m sorry, Rain… he’s not usually like this. I really don’t know what’s gotten into him. He doesn’t have many friends, so I hope you don’t take offense and continue to hang out with him.”

Evelyn lowered her head, unceasingly apologizing.

But Rain’s lips only spread into an involuntary smile.

“Of course I understand and I don’t resent him for it.”

How could he hold a grudge against Gray? He’d given him such a good opportunity to meet his mother.

“By the way, did Gray tell you about his participation in the tournament?”

“…No. We’ve been quite distant lately and he’s even more closed off than before.”

Her head dipped even lower. Rain nodded.

Anyway, it will be a problem if Evelyn finds out how he ‘defeated’ her son and what he did to him. Without exaggeration, it could completely ruin his plan.

After all, no matter how trash Gray was or how badly he treated her, she was still his mother.

But Rain was certain. Gray would never tell her about something so humiliating.

“Don’t worry, it’s not your fault. It’s just that he’s at the age now where he needs a stern hand from father to discipline him…”

Her head lifted and her face brightened noticeably.

“Really? You really think so?”

Her gaze on this young man became even warmer. He seemed to understand all the difficulties she was facing, raising her son alone…

“Yes. Have I ever lied to you?”

“Haha, indeed, there’s no point for Sir Rain to lie to that old woman.”

“Sir? Just call me Rain. Speaking of which… Ms. Shay isn’t your real name, is she?”

…!

It was such a harsh question that Evelyn’s whole body shuddered.

It seemed to her as if thunder had struck in the middle of a clear sky.

“Uh… uhm… um… that…”

Her eyes darted around desperately, looking for any possible excuse.

“Do not worry, I already know about it and have nothing against it. In fact, I have a proposal for you… do you want to hear it?”

Rain smiled relaxedly at her, reassuring her.

But in Evelyn’s eyes… it was nothing short of the devil’s smile.
