Chapter 141: Chapter 141: Rebuttal
“How selfish. You are being unreasonable and greedy right now.” Yuan Xin finished his words with a cold expression.
“You little—!” the man growled, stepping forward as if to grab Yuan Xin, but the boy didn’t flinch. His icy stare seemed to freeze the man in his tracks.
“Hey, we never said Boss Su wasn’t good a person! She acted like a good person by keeping the price of the rooms fair.
She knows that room rent shouldn’t be more than 5000 federal coins and hence didn’t charge more than 5000 federal coins.
If she can show conscience during renting, why can’t she show her conscience during the gold exchange rate? Isn’t she a capitalist?”
Yuan Xin frowned,
“You are taking everything-”
“Why are you defending a capitalist system that benefits only the elite?” another protester shouted.
“We are the ones suffering! We should be getting what we deserve, not crumbs. This whole system is rigged against us!”
Yuan Xin glanced briefly at the monitor that connected him to Su Jiyai.
“The system you’re referring to is one that ensures survival. If you want more than that, you’re welcome to try your luck out there.”
He nodded towards the direction of the base’s gates, where danger loomed beyond the walls.
“We’re not here to beg for survival!” one of the protesters shot back.
“We’re here to take what’s rightfully ours! If Boss Su really cared about the people, she wouldn’t be making us jump through hoops for such a pathetic price! She’s just another greedy leader pretending to care about the masses.”
The protesters’ voices grew louder, their faces flushed with self-righteous indignation.
One of them, a tall man with a scruffy beard, stepped forward, waving his hands dramatically.
“She’s hoarding all the wealth!” he shouted, eyes bulging with fury.
“She’s got gold, resources, and weapons, and she’s sitting on it like a dragon! While we—while the people—get scraps.
It’s time to stop pretending! She’s no better than the others who profited from our misery.”
A few others nodded vehemently, emboldened by his speech.
“She’s just another hypocrite!” the middle-aged woman spat.
“Pretending to be fair with the room prices, but when it comes to something valuable like gold, suddenly she’s all about ‘market rates’ and ‘economics.’ It’s a scam! She’s a scam!”
Yuan Xin’s jaw clenched slightly.
He didn’t let their words rile him, but the boy’s irritation was evident.
“You’re accusing Boss Su of being a capitalist hoarder,” Yuan Xin said calmly.
“Yet, you’re here, under her protection, in her base, reaping the benefits of the resources she has secured for everyone’s survival.
You all sleep in comfortable rooms, have access to clean water, and eat well—things that most people out there would kill for.
The rate for gold exchange is the market price. Nothing more, nothing less.”
The tall man sneered.

“You call 10,000 points for a gram of gold ‘market price’? That gold could buy a whole fortress before everything went to hell!
She’s making a fortune off of our misfortune, and you’re just her little puppet, too young and dumb to see it.”
Yuan Xin’s eyes flashed dangerously.
“Fortresses? Do you think the value of gold in a post-apocalyptic world is the same as it was before?
You’d rather hoard your gold while the world burns, clinging to outdated ideas of wealth while Boss Su ensures that everyone in this base survives another day.
She doesn’t need to take gold from anyone—yet she’s giving you an option to turn it into something useful. You’re here, alive, because of her.”
“Don’t lecture us, kid,” a shorter man with a shaved head growled.
“We know how this works. She sets the rules. She controls the economy in here. If she wanted to, she could set the price at a hundred thousand points.
But she won’t, ’cause she’s greedy. She’s just another rich person playing with power, and you’re defending it!”
“Then leave please.” A calm robotic voice said.
The protestors turned silent instantly. How could they not when Boss Su has decided to answer them?
Their eyes unconsciously turned to the location where the speaker was. Wondering whether Boss Su could see them.
Su Jiyai looked at the protestor through the monitor with a cold gaze and repeated,
“I have said, since you find the exchanging rates so agonizing, leave this capitalist’s base.”
The tension in the air thickened as Su Jiyai’s voice, calm yet authoritative, echoed through the room.
The protesters glanced nervously at one another, their earlier bravado faltering under the weight of her words. No one moved.
“You heard me,” Su Jiyai continued, her gaze never leaving the screen.
“You are not prisoners here. You are free to leave. Take your gold, and your demands, and try your luck outside these walls.
But let me remind you—there is no other base that will offer you even half of what I do. Out there, gold is worthless. Survival is the only currency.”
The scruffy man, the self-appointed leader of the protest, swallowed hard, but his pride wouldn’t let him back down just yet.
His voice was shaky, though he tried to maintain his defiant tone.
“You’re just trying to scare us,” he said, taking a step forward.
“You think we’ll beg to stay if you threaten us with what’s outside? But we’ve heard the stories. Other places are doing better. You’re not the only one running a base, Su Jiyai.”
Su Jiyai’s lips curled into a faint smile, but her eyes remained cold and calculating.
“You think you’ll find a utopia out there?” she asked softly.
“That somewhere, someone’s offering handouts and luxury for nothing? You’re welcome to leave and find it. But let me tell you the truth.
Those stories are just that—stories. I’ve seen the other bases. I’ve traded with them. I know what goes on outside these walls, and trust me, your gold won’t buy you a week of food anywhere else.”
During her time in the military, Su Jiyai had too many conversations with Qin Feng and saw many things.
Maybe the situation has changed and maybe she doesn’t know much about the outside world now.
But the apocalypse was still there.
