Chapter 199: Chapter 199: Half Awakened Power.
Huo Ning wandered aimlessly through the garden at night, her small frame illuminated by the soft glow of the moon.
The night was peaceful, a stark contrast to the storm of thoughts swirling in her mind.
She wrapped her arms around herself as if trying to hold her doubts and insecurities at bay.
It had been weeks since she had started working at Boss Su’s base, and no matter how hard she tried, she felt like a failure.
Her mind drifted back to her time at the institute—the cold, sterile halls, the needles, the injections, and the countless experiments.
Each day, they pumped strange liquids into her body, hoping she would awaken some kind of power, something useful in the harsh world of the apocalypse.
But nothing had come of it.
No abilities, no strength.
She was as powerless as ever, a failure in the eyes of the institute and, more painfully, in her own eyes.
Huo Ning glanced up at the starry sky, her chest tightening with frustration.
She had hoped things would be different when she was rescued by Boss Su. She thought maybe, just maybe, she could finally do something meaningful, and contribute in some way.
But no.
All she had done was become a burden to Boss Su and the others.
Her footsteps slowed as she came to a stop by a small pond in the garden.
The water rippled gently, reflecting the moonlight in shimmering patterns.
Huo Ning stared at it, her reflection wavering like her fragile self-esteem.
She clenched her fists, feeling tears prick at the corners of her eyes.
“Why am I so useless?” she whispered to herself, the words heavy with bitterness.
“I can’t even do something simple like helping with the tenant interviews. I’m just… nothing.”
Her gaze hardened as she closed her eyes and silently prayed, not to any specific deity but to the universe, to anything or anyone that might listen.
“Please,” she whispered, her voice trembling with desperation.
“Please let me be of some use. I want to help Boss Su… I want to make her proud.”
Her prayer hung in the cool night air, and for a moment, nothing happened.
But then, something stirred within her.
A strange warmth started to build deep inside, a sensation she had never felt before.
Huo Ning opened her eyes in surprise, her heart racing as the warmth spread through her chest, down her arms, and into her hands.
Slowly, she raised her hand, her fingers trembling as she felt the warmth gather there as if something was trying to break free.
Her breath caught in her throat as a faint ripple of light began to form in her palm.
It was weak at first, barely visible, but as she focused on it, the light grew stronger.

The glow had a greenish tint, soft yet unmistakable.
“What… what is this?” she whispered, her eyes wide in disbelief.
For a few fleeting moments, the light shimmered brightly in her hand, pulsing gently with energy.
Huo Ning stared at it, too shocked to move or even comprehend what was happening.
Her heart pounded in her chest, excitement bubbling up inside her.
Could this be… her power?
Was this what the institute had been trying to awaken all those years ago?
But before she could fully grasp the situation, the green glow flickered and vanished, leaving her hand empty once again.
Huo Ning blinked in confusion, her hand still outstretched, the warmth fading as quickly as it had come.
She stood frozen by the pond, staring at her hand in disbelief.
“Did that really just happen?” she muttered under her breath.
She clenched her hand into a fist, willing the glow to return, but nothing happened.
For the next few minutes, she frantically tried to recreate the feeling—the warmth, the glow, the power—but no matter how hard she concentrated, her hand remained ordinary, the light gone as if it had never existed.
Disappointment washed over her like a cold wave.
Had she imagined it?
Was it just a trick of her mind, born out of her desperate need to be useful?
She stood there for what felt like an eternity, replaying the sensation in her mind, trying to make sense of it.
Eventually, she gave up, sighing heavily as she turned and walked back to her room.
The next two weeks passed uneventfully.
Huo Ning tried everything to reawaken the power she had felt that night.
She returned to the garden at the same time every night, stood in the same spot by the pond, and repeated her prayer, hoping to feel that warmth again.
She even tried mimicking her thoughts and emotions from that moment, but nothing worked.
The green light never returned. Gradually, she began to convince herself that it had all been in her head, a hallucination caused by exhaustion and wishful thinking.
With a heavy heart, she finally gave up, returning to her daily routine with Yuan Xin and the others.
The memory of the strange power faded to the back of her mind.
But then, two weeks later, as she lay lazily in her bed, humming a soft tune to herself, something shifted again.
The familiar warmth stirred within her, only this time it was stronger, more intense.
Huo Ning froze mid-song, her heart pounding as the warmth spread through her body.
She sat up, staring at her hand as the green glow reappeared, brighter and more stable than before.
It pulsed in her palm, lingering for more than ten seconds before fading again.
Her breath caught in her throat, excitement and disbelief warring within her.
“It’s real,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “It’s real.”
This time, she knew it wasn’t her imagination. She had power—real power—and it had awakened.
“What should I do? Inform Boss Su? No! I haven’t fully awakened yet! She will be disappointed if I show my half-awakened powers.” Huo Ning muttered a beautiful smile appeared on her face as she continued, “I will tell her once my powers are fully awaken.”
