Chapter 228: Chapter 228: Deimos
“Alright, I’ve agreed. Now, tell me about my past,” he pressed, hoping Su Jiyai might offer a shred of the truth before he fulfilled his end of the bargain.
Su Jiyai’s smile remained unfazed, her eyes glinting with amusement.
“Write the book first.”
Jake stared at her, the weight of her demand sinking in.
“You really don’t trust me enough to give me even a hint?”
Su Jiyai’s response was swift and cutting,
“Would you trust a vampire who, just a few months ago, was hell-bent on killing you?”
Her question hit Jake like a punch.
He paused, the harsh truth of her words sinking in. She wasn’t wrong. If the roles were reversed, would he trust her?
He didn’t answer right away, instead letting the silence stretch between them as he considered her words.
Finally, he sighed, his voice quieter, more vulnerable than before.
“Do you think I still want to kill you?”
Su Jiyai’s smile widened, but she didn’t respond.
Her silence was an answer in itself. Jake’s chest tightened at her lack of trust, though he couldn’t blame her.
They were allies now, but only because their interests aligned, not because they had truly grown close.
He forced a smile, hiding the ache that began to gnaw at him.
“You’ve guessed right, then,” he muttered softly before turning away.
His aura shifted, growing colder, and heavier, as if a shadow had fallen over him.
He left the room, the sound of his footsteps fading down the hallway. Su Jiyai watched him go, her expression unreadable.
As soon as Jake was out of earshot, her system piped up, its voice tentative,
[Host… don’t you think you were being too harsh on him?]
Su Jiyai chuckled, leaning against the wall with her arms crossed.
“I have to be. People like Jake only understand strength. If I showed him any weakness, he would try to take advantage. After all, some people bully the weak and fear the strong.”
[Host are you taunting me?]
“Oh, you’re quick today. Yes, I suppose I am.”
The system hesitated, processing her words.
[Still…]
“Aw…are you feeling emotional for him? Let me clear some facts. He was behind my brother Lin Hao…”
Before she could finish her words, the system asked in an exclaimed voice.
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
[Wait! Host! What did you say?]
Su Jiyai frowned,
“What? Jake is after my brother?”
[No the other one host.]
“Lin Hao is my brother?” Su Jiyai repeated in an uncertain voice.
[Host…why do you think Lin Hao is your brother?]
“Guess…wait, system you should know whether Lin Hao is my brother or not, right?” Su Jiyai asked in a slightly excited tone. Regarding the system, she had her own suspicions.
The system was silent for a while before saying,
[Host, Lin Hao is not your brother.]
“What?” Su Jiyai was shocked. Her head was buzzing. However she soon recovered, and asked in a low voice,
“Is he perhaps related to me biologically?”
[No host.]
“I don’t believe! I will conduct a DNA test.” Su Jiyai muttered. Her blue furs suddenly lost their luster.
The system consoled her,
[Host you are not alone.]
However, Su Jiyai ignored it. She was truly not in the mood to converse with the system.
After a while, the system, wanting to cheer up, changed the subject.
[Host… do you really know about Jake’s past? What if he realizes you don’t?]
Su Jiyai’s eyes darkened, but her smile remained as she stared at the now-empty doorway.
“The thing about knowing more than someone else,” she muttered, “is that you can say anything, and they’ll believe it—so long as they need what you have.”
The system was silent for a moment before cautiously asking,
“So… you don’t know anything about his past?”
Su Jiyai’s smile was sharp and calculating. “Not a thing.”
In truth, she had spent the last two weeks gathering scraps of information from the institute.
The General, the soldiers, even Dr. Mei and Dr. Pan—each had unknowingly offered small pieces of a larger puzzle.
She had combined those fragments with stories she’d heard in the past, stories about other vampires, and spun a narrative that she knew would make Jake believe she held the key to his forgotten history.
Of course, it wasn’t the complete truth. If she knew the full truth why would she bother to converse with General Yi?
In fact, much of what she told him was a half-truth, stitched together from rumors and assumptions.
But it was enough to make it seem real.
Her system interrupted her thoughts,
[What happens when Jake finds out the truth?]
Su Jiyai’s expression didn’t waver.
She had already thought ahead. “He won’t. Not unless someone tells him.”
Dr. Mei and Dr. Pan were dealt with. She will soon deal with General Yi too.
In short, no one from the institute could tell Jake the real truth.
“But what if he finds out from HQ?” the system asked, its tone laced with concern.
Su Jiyai smirked, her eyes gleaming with mischief. “By the time Jake gets the chance to meet HQ, they’ll be long gone.”
Jake’s desperation for answers would only drive him further into her hands.
Once he wrote down everything she wanted about the vampires’ abilities, she would have the knowledge she needed to complete her own goals.
The rest, as far as she was concerned, didn’t matter.
Su Jiyai leaned back, satisfied.
“Jake will never know the truth. And if he does… well, by then, it’ll be too late for him to change anything.”
Her system fell silent, though it couldn’t shake the unease it felt from how smart its host had become.
Just as Su Jiyai was thinking about her other plans she heard the general’s slightly groaning voice.
Without hesitation, Su Jiyai opened a portal and pushed the general in.
Suddenly a prompt sounded.
[Congratulations host for dealing with the Pawn Of Devil.]
[Congratulations host for dealing a blow to Deimos.]
[Ding! A special mission has been triggered…]
