Chapter 256: Chapter 256: Revenge
Su Yun after getting beaten thought she would be expelled from the base. Everyone else thought so too.
But to her surprise Boss Su let her stay.
Su Yun sat on the edge of her small bed, her body sore and bruised from the beating.
She tended to her injuries with trembling hands, resentment simmering beneath her carefully composed face.
“Boss Su… acting all high and mighty,” she muttered under her breath. “Giving me one more chance as if she’s some benevolent ruler. Just wait, someday, I’ll make her regret this.”
Her mind wandered to the cold, disdainful stares of the other tenants.
Every time she crossed paths with someone, they either ignored her entirely or muttered insults under their breath.
It was suffocating. Su Yun decided that she needed a new plan—a new target to climb her way back to comfort.
The next day, after some rest, Su Yun felt significantly better.
She glanced at herself in the cracked mirror, smoothing her hair and applying a touch of makeup to cover the paleness of her face.
“I’m still beautiful,” she told herself with a small, bitter smile. “And beauty is my weapon.”
Just as she was preparing to step outside and scout for a new opportunity, a sharp knock echoed from her door.
Startled, Su Yun hesitated before walking over to open it.
When the door creaked open, she was greeted by the sight of Pei Meng, his tall and rugged frame filling the doorway.
Su Yun’s heart sank momentarily but quickly recovered. She forced a soft smile, a mixture of surprise and relief.
“Pei Meng? What brings you here?”
Pei Meng’s expression was earnest, his brows furrowed with concern.
“I was worried about you,” he said immediately. “I heard what happened, but by the time I got there, it was already over.”
He stepped inside without waiting for an invitation, his voice tinged with guilt.
“I should’ve been there for you, Su Yun. I wanted to protect you… but I failed.”
Before she could respond, Pei Meng closed the distance between them and wrapped her in a firm, protective hug.
Su Yun stiffened momentarily but quickly put on an expression of touched gratitude.
Inside, though, her thoughts swirled in disdain.
“Protect me? You couldn’t even show up on time. What use are you?”
Outwardly, she said softly, “Pei Meng, I appreciate your concern. It means a lot to me.”
Pei Meng pulled back slightly, his face flushed. “You don’t have to face this alone anymore,” he said firmly.
Then, with a sudden burst of determination, he added, “I want to marry you, Su Yun.”
Su Yun’s eyes widened, genuinely caught off guard. She blinked, stunned. “M-marry me?”
Pei Meng nodded earnestly.

“Yes. I don’t want anyone to bully you again. If you’re my wife, everyone will know you’re under my protection. They won’t dare lay a hand on you.”
For the first time in years, Su Yun felt a flicker of real emotion—something close to being moved.
But just as quickly, she pushed the thought aside.
Marriage? To Pei Meng? He was loyal and honest, but he lacked the wealth and status she craved. She needed time.
After a pause, she smiled gently and said,
“Pei Meng, you’ve touched my heart. Truly, you have. But I… I want to stand beside you as your equal. I want to prove that I can earn my own place, that I’m worthy of you.”
Pei Meng’s eyes softened, and he seemed to consider her words deeply. After a moment, he said,
“If that’s how you feel, then I understand. But… what about an engagement? It’s a promise—a step toward marriage. And it’ll show everyone that you’re mine, even while you work to achieve your goals.”
Su Yun’s mind raced.
The engagement didn’t bind her completely, and it might even elevate her status within the base.
If she found someone better later, she could always break it off.
She nodded slowly. “An engagement sounds perfect,” she said, a hint of bashfulness in her tone. “I’d be honored.”
Pei Meng’s face broke into a joyful smile. “You’ve made me the happiest man today, Su Yun.”
But then, his expression turned serious. “There’s one thing I need to ask, though.”
Su Yun tilted her head curiously. “What is it?”
Pei Meng hesitated before continuing.
“It’s about your family. My second wife’s family… they were like leeches. They kept pestering me for money, trying to take advantage of me. I just need to know—what’s your family like? I hope you understand why I’m asking.”
Su Yun let out a relieved laugh, entirely unsuspicious of his question. She waved a hand dismissively.
“Oh, Pei Meng, you don’t need to worry. I can tell you everything about my family but I only need you to not laugh at me.”
Pei Meng laughed out loud, “Why would I laugh at my sweetheart.”
Su Yun was completely won over by Pei Meng’s words and told everything about her family. Towards the end, her eyes were brimming with tears,
“They are just too much! How can they abandon me?”
Pei Meng patted her back and said,
“Don’t cry! Don’t cry! I will teach them a lesson.”
Su Yun who was crying suddenly paused and her eyes widened with excitement, “You will?”
Pei Meng nodded with a earnest look on his face and said, “They dared to bully, so they should be ready to face the consequences. Only…”
“Only what?” Su Yun asked hurriedly. The thought of being able to take revenge on the Su family filled her with immense joy.
“You see after working in Boss Su’s base, I made some connections, but outside the base, I don’t have much connection.
I can only teach them a lesson if they are in Boss Su’s base. It will be great if they can come here, because only then can I teach them a lesson.”
Su Yun was so excited that she almost farted twice, however, she managed to hold it in and said,
“Don’t worry, I can bring them here!”
