Chapter 284: Chapter 284: Zombie King
“We’ve searched all known locations, but there’s nothing. It’s as if the cat has disappeared completely.”
HQ’s grip tightened on the armrest, his jaw clenching. He had been hearing the same story over and over again, and it was starting to grate on his nerves.
“No trace of the cat… no sightings… nothing?” HQ repeated, his voice cold. “Are all of you that incompetent?”
The man tensed, knowing that HQ’s patience was wearing thin. “We’re doing everything we can, sir,” he said quickly, trying to defend himself. “But the cat is elusive. We’ll keep searching.”
HQ waved his hand dismissively, cutting him off. “Leave.”
The man bowed and hurried out of the room, just as the woman had done moments earlier. The room fell into an uneasy silence, but it didn’t last long.
Suddenly, HQ’s communicator beeped, and a message flashed across the screen.
His eyes narrowed as he read the report, his anger rising with each word.
“The institute in Crystal Cove… destroyed…” HQ muttered through clenched teeth.
He slammed his fist down on the armrest, the impact echoing through the room.
He had only just learned of the destruction of another institute, and now this?
“Those fools,” he growled, standing up from his chair, his anger barely contained. “How could they let this happen again?”
After a pause, he shook his head,
“That blue cat…she may be on a mission to destroy all the institutes under me…but why? Was she one of the experiments? If so then it means…she is a human, right?”
HQ’s eyes lit up. If it was true then he only needed to see through the data, and he would know about the blue cat’s human form.
He hurriedly ordered his subordinate to investigate the current situation of the Crystal Cove Base.
At the same time, he started to check all the data.
Yet even after looking for a long time, he didn’t find any blue cat in the data.
HQ was frustrated.
“Looks like I have to use a new approach.”
With that thought, HQ stood up and took out a scroll. He tore the scroll and the next second he was teleported.
In an instant, he arrived in a desolate, eerie landscape.
The ground was cracked and broken, and the air was thick with the stench of decay.
Zombies shuffled aimlessly, their once-human forms twisted into grotesque shapes.
As HQ moved through the area, a few of the zombies turned to look at him.
Their eyes glowed faintly, and there was a glimmer of intelligence in their gaze.
Some of them were sitting on what used to be benches, staring off into the distance, as if lost in thought.
Others stood in small groups, watching him with a quiet intensity.
A few zombies got up and lumbered toward HQ.

However, as they got closer, they caught the scent of his perfume—an aroma that sent a clear signal to them.
The zombies hesitated, their glowing eyes blinking as they backed away, seemingly repelled by the smell.
HQ had chosen this particular perfume for a reason—it masked his human scent and gave off something that the zombies instinctively recognized and feared.
The zombies let him pass without much trouble, and HQ continued walking.
He soon reached a part of the area where the buildings, although dilapidated, were still somewhat intact. One of them, in particular, stood out.
It was taller and more well-built than the others, with remnants of its former glory still visible beneath the layers of grime and decay.
Outside the building stood two zombies who looked different from the rest.
They were large, muscular, and had a more menacing presence.
Their skin was darker, and their movements were sharper and more controlled. They clearly weren’t the average mindless zombies.
As HQ approached, the two strong zombies stepped forward, blocking his path.
They didn’t speak—zombies like them didn’t have the ability to—but their glowing eyes were fixed on HQ, and their posture was tense as if waiting for an explanation.
HQ knew exactly what they were thinking.
They wanted to know why he was here.
Without hesitation, HQ addressed them, his voice calm but authoritative.
“I’m here to see your king,” he said, his eyes locking with theirs. “I have something important to discuss with him.”
The two zombies didn’t move at first, but HQ could feel them processing his words.
Their glowing eyes flickered as if they were communicating silently with one another.
After a moment, one of the zombies stepped aside, allowing HQ to pass.
The other followed suit, moving out of his way but keeping a close eye on him as he approached the entrance of the building.
Inside, the atmosphere was even more unsettling.
The further he walked, the more HQ could sense the presence of the king.
Finally, HQ reached a large chamber at the center of the building. Sitting on a crumbling throne was the king of the zombies.
He was much larger than the others, his skin pale and stretched tight over his skeletal frame.
His eyes glowed brighter than any of the other zombies, and there was a cold, calculating intelligence behind them.
However, HQ knew the reality.
This zombie, even though it was a zombie king of the area, couldn’t speak. Neither could it maintain its intelligence for most of the time.
It also needs to eat humans, time and time again.
HQ still remembered how it had met this zombie kind. Before becoming the king of zombies, it was one of the institute’s experiments.
He was thrown out just like others.
Yet HQ’s boss suddenly told HQ to rescue the experiment subject. At first, HQ didn’t understand, but he still followed his boss’s orders.
Unfortunately, the test subject was already bitten by the zombie. HQ watched with his own eyes as the test subject transformed into a zombie.
HQ had never forgotten the look in the subject’s eyes as he changed—desperation, fear, and then… nothing. Just emptiness.
However,it remembered HQ’s kindness.
