Chapter 290: Chapter 290: Shocking Discovery.
HQ hung up the call.
His four subordinates, all of them with unique superpowers, were busy searching the entire base.
Their names were Caden, Jax, Vira, and Nova. Each of them had been assigned a section of the base to explore.
Caden could see through walls, Jax had super speed, Vira could detect energy sources, and Nova could blend into the shadows, making her nearly invisible.
With their powers, they thought it would only take a few minutes to find something, but after 15 minutes of searching, they came up with nothing.
The base was like a small city, and even with all their powers combined, they were still empty-handed.
Frustration grew as they checked every corner, every room, and every building.
Jax zipped through corridors at lightning speed, Caden scanned rooms with his X-ray vision, Vira focused on sensing any strange energy readings, and Nova slinked through the shadows, double-checking hidden places.
But none of them could find any sign of the powerful zombie they were looking for.
Caden, feeling annoyed, was about to call off the search when he suddenly remembered something.
“Wait… what about the forbidden area?”
The others paused, exchanging looks.
The forbidden area was a part of the base they were usually told to avoid.
It was said to be dangerous, with strange energy coming from it.
But if the zombie they were after was powerful, it might be there.
“That’s the only place left we haven’t searched,” Vira said, her voice a bit hesitant.
“Let’s split up,” Nova suggested. “Two of us will check the forbidden area, and the other two will finish looking in the regular rooms. We can’t miss anything.”
They all agreed.
Caden and Nova volunteered to check the forbidden area, while Vira and Jax decided to head for the conference room.
As Caden and Nova approached the forbidden area, they found two paths.
One led to the left, and the other to the right. They didn’t know which path would lead to anything useful, so they decided to split up again.
“I’ll go left,” Caden said, using his X-ray vision to try and see if anything was beyond the walls.
But as he took a few steps down the left path, he hit a strong, invisible wall of energy.
It blocked his way completely, and no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t get past it.
Frustrated, he stepped back, knowing he couldn’t do much more without attracting attention.
He turned around, leaving the left path unexplored.
Meanwhile, Nova went down the right path, moving slowly in case there were any traps.
Like Caden, he too felt a strange wall blocking his way.
It seemed impossible to get through, so he was about to turn back when something caught his attention.

A voice echoed from the other side of the wall. “Yes! I’ve finally reached level 2 of my superpower. Now I can reduce the time it takes for vegetables to grow!”
Nova froze, shocked by what he’d just heard. Vegetables?
In the last 20 years, no one has been able to grow vegetables in this post-apocalyptic world.
Even the institute had failed in its attempts to grow anything edible.
How could someone claim they had a superpower that sped up vegetable growth? It sounded impossible.
Curious, Nova turned himself invisible, using his superpower to blend in with the environment.
He crept closer to the sound of footsteps, waiting for whoever had spoken to appear.
Soon, a young girl, looking no older than 12, emerged from the protective barrier.
She was holding a black plastic bag, walking casually as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened.
Nova followed her silently, keeping his distance. His heart raced as he peeked into the plastic bag she carried.
Tomatoes. Bright red tomatoes, fresh and real, were inside.
He almost gasped aloud. In all the years since the apocalypse, he had never seen a real tomato before.
The temptation to grab the bag and run was overwhelming.
His mouth watered just thinking about tasting real food, not the processed junk he was used to.
But Nova held back.
This was too important. He had to tell HQ first.
If someone had figured out how to grow vegetables, it could change everything.
Quickly, he pulled out his communication device, still invisible, and typed a message to HQ:
“Found something strange. A girl claims she has a superpower that can grow vegetables faster. I saw tomatoes in her bag. Reporting back.”
Just as he sent the message, his device buzzed again. It was from Vira and Nova, the other team.
“Zombie located. It’s in the conference room.”
Nova’s eyes widened in surprise. They had finally found the zombie they were searching for!
Before Nova could leave, he spotted a young boy walking toward the girl. The boy looked calm and confident as he waved at her.
“Huo Ning!” he called out, smiling. “How was the harvest? Any luck today?”
The girl, Huo Ning, grinned and lifted the black plastic bag. “Yeah, it was good. Got some tomatoes this time!”
The boy, who Nova now guessed was named Yuan Xin, the receptionist, chuckled.
“That’s great. Let’s head back then.”
Together, the two of them started walking away, chatting casually as if nothing was wrong.
Nova stayed hidden, watching them with intense focus. His heart pounded in his chest, and his mind raced.
He was about to type out another message to HQ about this new development, but then he hesitated.
An idea formed in his head. A dangerous, tempting idea.
If he kidnapped Huo Ning and took her with him out of the base, he could use her power to grow vegetables for himself.
No one else in the world could do that—not even the institute. If he could sell those vegetables, he’d be rich.
He imagined selling one tomato for a million federal coins. That would be enough to live in luxury for the rest of his life.
Greed flickered in his eyes as he stared at the girl. She had no idea how valuable she was.
