Chapter 125: The backlash
Olivia heard Mia’s consent and joked, “Hehe, then my life is in your hands, Mia.”
This sentence carried a lot of weight.
Back in the old world, Mia often heard it.
Those patients would often say to her before surgery, “Doctor Mia, my life is in your hands.”
Mia nodded solemnly.
“Don’t worry, I’m here.”
At that moment, Alex also approached.
He held the ant in his hands, and Olivia controlled it to climb onto his palm.
Alex looked at the two women with a serious expression and said, “Since that’s the case, let’s prepare to start the experiment. Sit down and be ready for everything.”
Crushing an ant was just a momentary task.
But if there was a backlash, it wouldn’t be a trivial matter.
Alex didn’t want any accidents to happen.
Olivia obediently sat down, took a deep breath, and adjusted her breathing.
Mia sat beside her.
Her hands emitted a white light as she activated her “Healing” ability, ready to deal with any emergencies.
All three of them were on high alert.
Dealing with the unknown required full concentration.
Alex looked at Olivia, seeing her determined expression, and asked, “Olivia, are you ready? If you are, I’ll start.”
Olivia smiled and said, “I’m ready, you can start.”
The little ant in the palm of his hand also looked up at him.
Alex knew that Olivia was controlling it.
Without further hesitation, he closed his palm.
The ant died.
A sudden feeling of suffocation surged up in Olivia’s chest.
She felt as if something was tightly gripping her neck, and her brain felt like it was being pricked by needles.
Then, her chest felt tight, and she couldn’t help but cough up blood.
Such a strong reaction frightened Alex and Mia.
“Mia, quickly, treat Olivia.”
Without Alex’s command, Mia immediately began to heal.
White light radiated from her hands as she fully deployed her “Healing” ability, and white particles slowly infiltrated Olivia’s body, repairing her injuries.

Mia saw Olivia open her eyes and asked with concern, “Olivia, how do you feel? Are you feeling better?”
After opening her eyes, Olivia had mostly recovered.
She patted Mia’s hand and looked up at Alex.
“It’s okay now, the backlash wasn’t as severe as you thought.”
Alex blinked, somewhat skeptical.
“Really?”
That statement lacked conviction.
After all, she had just coughed up blood.
Olivia nodded earnestly and reiterated, “Really. I know my condition best and wouldn’t pretend to be strong.”
“The ability does indeed produce a backlash. The moment you crushed the ant, I felt like my brain was being pricked by needles, and I was momentarily distracted. Then, I felt a tightness in my chest, like my neck was being blocked.”
“But after spitting out the blood, I felt relieved all over.”
Alex continued to ask, “Are there any other internal injuries or anything like that?”
Olivia shook her head.
She didn’t find any other problems; it’s just that her ability is in cooldown.
[Beast Taming]
Cooldown Remaining: 23 hours, 57 minutes, 23 seconds.
Alex was somewhat surprised; he didn’t expect the cooldown period for this ability to be so long.
“A whole day of cooldown?! That’s a long time!”
They were going to fight zombies and survivors.
A full day of cooldown for the ability meant missing out on many opportunities.
Mia suddenly asked, “Olivia, if the controlled beast isn’t killed, does your ability still have a cooldown?”
“That’s what I was thinking too.”
Olivia replied, “Animals can be controlled for a long time. The cooldown is happening now because the controlled beast was forcibly killed, resulting in a forced cooldown.”
“I see!”
Alex suddenly realized.
Now it seemed that this ability was quite useful.
The premise, however, was that the controlled beast wasn’t killed.
That was also the biggest flaw of this ability; they had to protect the controlled beast.
Moreover, this experiment only involved an ant, which was too weak.
If Olivia could control mutant creatures, that would be different; it would really give them a lot of help.
Both zombies and mutant creatures were slowly evolving now.
Survivors who died at the hands of mutant creatures were no fewer than those who died at the hands of zombies.
This was the offensive ability Alex had been hoping for!
Originally, he thought “Beast Taming” was nothing special and not very useful.
But now, he realized there were many areas where it could be developed.
Controlling mutant insects to fly to enemy survivor bases and gather intelligence.
This was much less risky than “Concealment.”
Controlling mutant lions and tigers; this meant powerful combat output.
However, there was now one problem…
Alex asked, “Olivia, you mentioned before that ‘Beast Taming’ is about controlling animals. Can you make them act autonomously?”
Olivia nodded.
“Of course, that’s the most basic command,” she said. “Once the ‘Beast Taming’ ability is successfully cast and I gain control, I can make it obey my commands.”
“Sometimes, when I’m too busy to give specific orders, instructing it to act based on instinct is not a problem!”
Alex was pleasantly surprised.
He hadn’t expected that it was possible to make the controlled beast act based on its instinctual awareness.
If that was the case, could Olivia build a legion of mutant creatures?
With a single command, all beasts would attack.
The image excited Alex just to think about it.
He quickly asked, “Olivia, can you control multiple creatures at the same time?”
But Olivia’s response left him somewhat disappointed.
“Well… currently, it’s not allowed,” she explained. “When I was controlling the little ant, the system showed the current limit of creatures I could control was only one. Maybe the number will increase gradually as we develop further.”
Alex pondered for a moment and then nodded.
It made sense; if they could control a large number of mutant creatures right now, it would be too overpowered.
Gathering resources and then unleashing a legion of mutant creatures to crush any obstacles directly—it sounded tempting.
Perhaps there would be a chance to assemble such a legion of mutant creatures in the future.
But for now, it was time to call it a day.
Finally understanding Olivia’s “Beast Taming” ability, it seemed they would need to find suitable mutant creatures for Olivia to tame.
However, that would have to wait for another day.
Alex shared his plan.
“Olivia, you need powerful mutant creatures to fully demonstrate the strength of this ability. Tomorrow, we’ll capture a mutant creature for you.”
The most effective way to tame mutant beasts was still to knock them out, make them unconscious, or use the ability when their consciousness was weak.
It was like the Pokémon anime Alex watched as a child, where trainers had to defeat wild Pokémon before they could capture them with Poké Balls.
Olivia’s “Beast Taming” worked similarly.
