Chapter 70: Vegetable Seeds
Before this, they were just young people living routine lives in the city. Even Alex, who had once lived in poverty with his grandfather, hadn’t done anything like this before.
Curiously, Mia asked, “Alex, how do we plant these vegetables?”
Olivia blinked, hesitating, “Shouldn’t we just plant them and water them? That should be enough, right?”
Alex held the bags of seeds, looking conflicted.
“While it’s true that planting and watering should work, each vegetable has different needs. Some prefer more water, while others don’t need as much to survive.”
“It sounds complicated!”
Olivia sighed, feeling somewhat helpless.
“Hey, it’s been so long since we’ve had fresh vegetables and fruits. We’ve been eating canned fruits and vegetables, and now that we finally have some seeds, we don’t know how to plant and care for them. I regret not learning how to plant fruits and vegetables from my uncle!”
Alex laughed heartily, amused by Olivia’s distressed expression.
“Olivia, we didn’t know before, but now we can learn how to plant vegetables. We have plenty of seeds to spare for learning.”
Olivia nodded reluctantly, then added with a hint of defiance, “What do you mean ‘plenty to spare’? Planting vegetables is so simple. I can figure it out on my own!”
Alex shrugged, not saying anything, but his expression said it all.
Determined, Olivia pulled Mia to her side.
“Mia, let’s plant together. And when we harvest, we won’t let Alex eat any. He’ll just have to watch us enjoy the fresh vegetables.”
Mia happily agreed, nodding along.
Alex watched the two girls conspire against him, then smirked, pondering.
Could it be that in recent times, he hadn’t been asserting his leadership in front of the two girls?
Alex wasn’t one to back down, though. He hummed, “Alright, let’s make it a competition. Let’s see who can grow fresh vegetables first. The loser has to agree to any one condition from the winner. What do you say, are you two up for it?”
Mia and Olivia scoffed, patting their chests confidently.
“Why wouldn’t we be? Haha, just wait until you spend a week doing our laundry for losing!”
Alex chuckled, “Let’s see about that!”
“I’m a planting expert, you two better be prepared to lose.”
Alex didn’t blush in the slightest.
He was indeed quite knowledgeable about planting in other aspects, except for germination…
To make room for planting these seeds and growing fresh vegetables, Alex collected plenty of fertile soil from the wild.
Then he packed the soil and seeds into foam boxes, placing them in the yard and on the rooftop terrace.
Lacking experience, they planted the seeds too densely on their first try, which delayed germination.
At first, Alex thought it was because of the intense sunlight, so he diligently watered them, hoping for germination.
It wasn’t until he found that the seeds had become waterlogged and still hadn’t germinated that he tried to remove them and replant them.
This time, Alex didn’t learn from the failure of the first attempt.

He had no idea why the seeds hadn’t changed; he just thought he had drowned them with too much water.
The sun was blazing.
With a straw hat on his head, Alex carefully buried the seeds in the soil, murmuring, “Sprout quickly, grow quickly.”
To encourage germination, Alex directly mixed fertilizer into the soil before planting the seeds.
Although he felt that this rough planting method was a bit off, he couldn’t pinpoint why.
Besides, he didn’t know how to plant in the first place.
Might as well give it a shot; who knows, maybe they’ll sprout.
Mia and Olivia were the same.
Although they didn’t scatter seeds like Alex did, they put only one seed in each foam box.
In theory, this much space should have been enough for germination.
But they made the same mistake as Alex: too much watering.
Standing in front of the foam boxes in the yard with vegetable seeds, they looked at each other, still puzzled why the seeds hadn’t sprouted after several days.
What could be the reason for this?!
Mia looked at Olivia, who was frowning beside her, and said, “Olivia, did we do something wrong? How come it’s been so many days and still no sprouts?”
“Normally, a fresh seed should sprout in just a few days. Could it be that our seed is dead?”
Olivia pursed her lips, looking skeptical.
“It shouldn’t be, right?”
“Alex wouldn’t give us dead seeds, they came from the supplies box. Could it be that we killed them…”
Mia thought for a moment and said, “That doesn’t make sense. We’ve been watering them several times a day, morning, noon, and night, and the yard gets plenty of sunlight. How could we have killed them?”
Olivia solemnly clasped her hands together, and with a decisive tone, said, “I know! We must have put too little fertilizer!”
Mia pointed at the foam box, surprised and somewhat incredulous.
“Isn’t that enough? We already put half a bag of fertilizer… Isn’t that too much already?”
Olivia shook her head, looking confident, “Mia, we’ve been thinking too conventionally!”
“Think about it, if we didn’t need a lot of fertilizer for composting, when would we ever use up a whole bag of fertilizer? So, we definitely need to put more fertilizer to ensure the seeds absorb enough nutrients.”
Mia was persuaded by Olivia’s serious analysis and nodded unconsciously.
“Okay, let’s pour the fertilizer into the foam box together.”
Olivia smiled, “Great!”
The two girls eagerly covered the seeds with the remaining fertilizer, full of anticipation for the sprouting and growth of the seeds.
At this moment, Alex had already walked from the rooftop terrace to the yard.
He pretended to be nonchalant, but in reality, he wanted to see how Mia and Olivia were planting, to gather some intelligence.
Just as Mia and Olivia finished sprinkling fertilizer on the seeds and saw Alex approaching, blocking in front of the foam box.
Mia refused, “Alex, you can’t. We’re in a competition now, and this counts as cheating.”
Alex scratched his head.
“I just came to see how you’re doing, don’t suffocate the seeds. I saw clearly from upstairs, covering the seeds with so much fertilizer definitely won’t work.”
Olivia snorted dismissively.
“You don’t understand, seeds need sufficient nutrients to sprout.”
Alex couldn’t help but twitch his mouth.
“Olivia, your perfect student and school beauty image is crumbling a bit…”
Hearing Alex’s muttered comment, Olivia’s forehead, clear and white, showed a faint bulge of veins.
Gritting her teeth, but still smiling, she said deliberately slowly, “Well, I’m a liberal arts student, I don’t understand agricultural planting, so there’s no crumbling of an image.”
“But you, Alex, you claimed to be a planting expert before. If you don’t produce any vegetables, you’ll really lose face.”
Alex raised an eyebrow, looking disdainful.
“It seems that if I don’t show some real skills, you both will treat my words as a joke. Just wait and see how I handle you two.”
Facing the challenge, both sides refused to back down.
But only they themselves knew what they were really thinking.
Mia and Olivia were full of confidence, looking forward to the sprouting and fruition of the seeds they planted, so they could flaunt the fresh vegetables in front of Alex!
However, if Alex were to admit defeat, they might consider giving him a slice of apple.
