Chapter 100: Building Courage
Mother Bai wanted to scold Bai Meiyue for acting so impulsively but then she sighed and sat down on the couch as if all her strength had been wiped off.
“Mom!”
“Mom, are you alright?”
“Mom?”
The three Bai siblings rushed towards Mother Bai, who waved her hand dismissively.
“I am fine,” she was still trembling all over, causing Bai Meiyue to sit next to her and hug her.
Seeing the condition of her mother, Bai Meiyue felt even more guilty as she muttered, “I am sorry, mom.”
“There is no need for you to apologise,” Mother Bai said helplessly. “You are right, we can no longer stay inside the house and hope for someone to come and rescue us. Who knows when the army will come to save us? We might as well learn to defend ourselves and take care of our family.”
“No, mom—” Bai Meiyue wanted to tell her mother that there was no need for her to worry. After all, looking at her trembling mother, Bai Meiyue suddenly felt as if it was her who was incompetent. If she was powerful enough, then she wouldn’t need her family to bear this burden.
However, her mother shook her head and patted her on the back of her hand. Although her body was shaking, the expression on his face was very determined.
“Jixuan, are you feeling better? Then you and I will go outside and find some supplies. Otherwise, who knows how long we will have to wait for the government to help us? We might as well try to do whatever we can to survive.”
“Mom…”
Bai Meiyue wanted to say something but Bai Jixuan had already stood up from the couch. He raised his hand and patted Bai Meiyue on the head and said to her, “Mom is right. If fighting with the zombies is going to help us awaken, then we need to do it. We cannot stay at home and leave everything to you and big brother.”
“Right you are, Jixuan.” Mother Bai wiped the tears from her eyes and then cupped Bai Meiyue’s cheeks. Her eyes were full of love as she said to her daughter, “Yueyue, don’t be afraid, okay. You stay—stay at home. When Mother finds water and food, she will come back home with your brothers. You have been looking sick these past few days, so you stay at home and don’t run around.”
“Take care of your nephews. They are asleep; if they don’t find anyone at home when they wake up, they will be scared.”
Who could understand Mother Bai’s inner sadness? She was just a small farmer who only knew how to wield a hoe and grow crops and raise livestock. But now that the world had changed, she had to take a step forward. She cannot watch her children starve and die, right?
She was already old and had lived her life even if she died while fighting the zombies; as long as Bai Jixuan awakened, it would be worth it!
Her children were young and even the oldest, Bai Zhan, hadn’t even turned thirty yet. And Bai Meiyue was at the tender age of eighteen, no matter what her children had to survive this disaster. So, she had no choice but to go with her second son. If something happened, then she would become his shield!
Her old life can be thrown away but her children can’t die!
Bai Meiyue knew what was going on in the head of her mother; in her past life, her mother had done something similar and gave her life away to protect Bai Zhan. Just thinking about how her mother took her life so lightly all for the sake of protecting her children, Bai Meiyue wanted to cry.
She was a fool to love and admire that selfish Bai Qingshi and ignore her mother. Bai Meiyue knew that even if she was to love her mother with everything, she would still never be able to make up for the wrongs that she had committed in her past life.
Her love for her mother could never amount to the love that her mother had for her. She was still a little girl in the eyes of her mother, and even though Mother Bai wanted to take her second brother outside to help him awaken, she did not say a word to Bai Meiyue.
Even with her life on the line, Mother Bai wanted to hide Bai Meiyue under her wings and keep her safe.
For a second, Bai Meiyue wanted to tell her mother that she too had awakened and that she was strong enough to protect her family.
But just as the words came to her tongue, she swallowed them back down. Even though she felt guilty, Bai Meiyue still let her rationality win over her emotions. Her mother was willing to straighten her back and step out of the safety of her house instead of hiding in her shell like a turtle. Since she was willing to digest, process, and accept this new world—Bai Meiyue knew that she needed to support her mother rather than stop her.
Although this entire process would be enough to make her heart twist in pain, this gut wrenching pain of hers would help her family. They would be able to survive in this world with or without her.
Bai Meiyue sniffed and tried to stop herself from crying but she couldn’t when she saw her mother stand up and look for a weapon. In the end, she picked up a butchering knife and thickly covered herself and Bai Jixuan to avoid being bitten.
She then said to Bai Zhan, “Go and call the Lei family. They must be having a hard time too, so its better to go together than alone.”
What Mother Bai didn’t say was that she was too scared to go alone with her two sons and needed someone to come with her. What was more, if things worked out for the better, Lei Qian and Bai Meiyue might get together in the future.

If they helped the Lei family now, they would be able to owe some favours to that family. Her daughter wouldn’t have to lower her head in the future that way.
