Chapter 105: Yet to face reality (2)
Bai Feng knew very well whether Chu Xia meant anything or not. He pursed his lips and stood up from the chair. “I will not be eating; you all can share my supplies.”
After he finished speaking, Bai Feng walked inside the room where he usually slept without waiting for anyone to stop him. Maybe in his heart, he also knew that no one would be willing to stop him.
Chu Xia waited for him to enter his room and then spat on the floor. “Bah! A packet of biscuits and fish; he thinks he is handing out charity to us. Is there any need to act all smug like that?”
“Mom!” Bai Xue warily eyed the door of Bai Feng’s room and then turned to look at her mother with anger written on her face. “Can you hesitate a little? Or do you not know what is going on outside? If you keep acting like this, see if Brother Feng will go outside and bring us supplies. Do you want to see him abandon us?”
“He dares!?” Chu Xia shrieked. Unlike others, she was yet to come to terms with the fact that the world was coming to an end.
Bai Qingshi was done with her tantrums. He threw his half-cooked and half-eaten fish on the floor and snapped, “Are you fucking blind? Did you not see the many elderly who were begging us to take them with us? Or did you not see the couple that pushed their mother into the arms of that monster?!”
As soon as Bai Qingshi brought that incident up, Chu Xia shuddered. Earlier, when they were returning home with Bai Feng, they noticed a couple who threw the old woman who was following them towards the zombie that was chasing them.
And what happened after that was simply too inhuman.
That monster pounced on the old woman and took a bite out of her face. Chu Xia would never forget the screams of that old woman as she tried to push away that monster. However, no matter how hard she screamed, the man and woman who drove her into the claws of danger never came back.
In the end, half of the woman’s face was eaten by that man-eating monster.
Chu Xia thought that the old woman was already after the man-eating monster ate half of her intestines but when the monster pulled away, she saw the old woman staggering back to her feet and walking away stiffly.
In a matter of seconds, she turned into a monster as well.
The sight was chilling enough to make Chu Xia have nightmares for the rest of her life.
“Hmph,” seeing that her expression had turned terrified, Bai Qingshi said to her, “Do you still think that we are living in the same world as we did before? The world is ruined and if you keep running your mouth like that, then you can go outside and hunt for supplies yourself! I am telling you if Ah Feng kicks you out, I will not bother with you.”
“Darling!” Chu Xia was chilled by the heartlessness of this man. The two of them have been together for more than twenty years and yet he didn’t even think twice before saying that he would not care about her if Bai Feng was to abandon her.
Bai Qingshi didn’t pay attention to her; instead, he turned to look at Bai Xue and Su Hu.
“You two as well,” he said. “Think before causing trouble for Feng’er. If he gets angry, then you all will be left on your own devices; don’t think that I will help you.”
Though Bai Xue was shocked by the shamelessness of her father, she still nodded sensibly and said, “Don’t worry, Dad. We will not cause any trouble for Brother Feng.”
After all, what could be expected from a man who was willing to sell his daughter for a business deal?
…
Bai Meiyue had no idea what happened to the Bai family. With the world coming to an end, the stable supply of electricity, water, and gas was all disrupted. Even the mobile networks were disrupted. With these supplies getting disrupted, people had no other choice but to look for another way to carry on with their lives.
With the rain getting lighter and the weather getting colder, Bai Meiyue wanted to connect the heaters that she had brought earlier to every room before joining it with the connection of the power generator but she couldn’t do it alone. She needed her brothers to help her out but no one was in the mood to do these small tasks when they were all worried about the changes in the world.
Mother Bai was still recovering from the fever that she got late in the night after her adventure outside. Though she did not show any signs of fear back then, it was clear that she was scared to her wits.
After this, Bai Meiyue didn’t dare to let her mother leave the house any more. Instead, she asked her mother to stay at home and grow vegetables and fruits. Though her mother didn’t notice it, Bai Meiyue, who was a skilled supernatural being, noticed the small sapling that often wandered around Mother Bai.
Mother Bai was yet to find out about her supernatural ability and Bai Meiyue decided to wait until her mother was a bit better to tell her about her awakening. After all, her mother was a bit freaked out after seeing the changes that were happening in the world.
“Then the supplies —” Mother Bai, who was lying on the bed weakly, couldn’t help but ask.
“I and my brothers will take care of it, Mother,” replied Bai Meiyue as she tucked her mother in the bed and said, “And don’t let this weigh on your mind. If you succeed in growing crops, then you will help us a lot. At least even if we don’t go outside, we will not have to worry about starving to death.”
Mother Bai looked a bit hesitant but then she sighed and said, “It’s my fault if only I had awakened like Jixuan and Zhan’er.”
“Mom,” Bai Meiyue interrupted and asked, “Do you really want to awaken or are you under the pressure of awakening like brothers because you think you will become a burden?”
