Chapter 106: Lurking rats

When Mother Bai didn’t answer, Bai Meiyue sighed and sat next to her. She took her mother’s hand and clasped it tightly. “There is no need for you to worry about becoming a burden, mom. You have done your best by raising us, so it’s okay for you to take it easy sometimes. What’s the point of having three supernatural beings if you cannot live a comfortable life?”

Seeing her mother feeling a bit relieved, Bai Meiyue understood that it wasn’t that she wanted to awaken and go out and fight the zombies; her mother was just worried about becoming a burden on her and her brothers.

She smiled at her mother and said, “Mom, why don’t you study about how to awaken? Though the world is ending now, there were some researchers who studied the consequences and the changes. I will send you some theories that they came up with. You can read these theories and come up with your own way to find your skills and powers.”

If possible, Bai Meiyue wanted to tell the truth to her mother, but seeing how spooked she looked, Bai Meiyue decided to hold it back until her mother got better and started accepting supernatural beings and zombies without falling sick. It wasn’t worth it if her mother’s health was to fall through.

With that said, she didn’t wait for her mother to wait and sent her some theories that she had written herself from her experience under different names and posted before the apocalypse. Though Bai Meiyue didn’t get the help that she needed when she was suffering in the apocalypse, she didn’t want the same to happen to others. Thus, she had written down some theories and posted them through a dummy account.

She hoped that these theories were read by a few people before the internet went down and would come in handy at the times of their need.

Originally, Bai Meiyue wanted to wait for her mother to finish reading but she started to feel sleepy. She had been awake since the morning and then used her essence to protect her family earlier in the afternoon. Because of this, she was not only sleepy but also exhausted.

She excused herself and then went back to her room, where a small heater was running on batteries. Mother Bai wanted to ask a lot of things to Bai Meiyue regarding her sons’ supernatural powers and Bai Meiyue’s water powers but when she heard that her daughter was tired, she did not stop her from taking a nap.

What was more, she also read the theory that Bai Meiyue sent her. In the long text, it was written that those who learn how to wield their abilities for the first time would feel really tired after using it. Bai Meiyue had used her essence to fill three bathtubs and a water jug; she must be really tired after using her powers.

Thus, Mother Bai simply let Bai Meiyue go and have some rest.

Bai Meiyue fell asleep for an unknown number of hours; when she opened her eyes, she didn’t see anything other than two pairs of eyes that glowed dark red in the darkness.

Her body reacted more quickly than her brain did and Bai Meiyue jumped up from the bed smoothly like a carp.

She fished out a gun from her space pocket and then shot the thing that was eyeing her.

BANG!

The gun let out a small boom because of the silencer and a second later the creature’s head exploded as its body fell to the ground.

Bai Meiyue turned the light on in her room and saw that it was a rat. It wasn’t fully mutated and was just the size of a small dog nonetheless, just as dangerous.

Taking out another gun, Bai Meiyue immediately went out of the room but didn’t turn the light on. Instead, she turned the flashlight on the ring that she snatched from Lei Qian. With two guns in her hands, it was appropriate for her to carry a flashlight with her.

She walked around the rooms of her brothers and mother, who were still asleep and then moved onto the first floor when she did not find anything. She finally found two rats in the kitchen and three in the bathing room.

While the ones in the kitchen were nibbling the bones in the trash can, creating a really terrifying cracking noise, the ones in the bathing room were drinking water from the vat that she had filled.

Bai Meiyue shot one rat at a time and then cleared up their traces. Of course, the water in the vat needed to be thrown out because they couldn’t use this water anymore. Even though everyone in the family had awakened, Bai Meiyue didn’t think it was right to take risks.

So she upturned the vat and threw the water away. Of course, she felt her heart ache when she threw the water away. Even if there was an unlimited supply of water, she shouldn’t be wasting resources like this.

She then went around looking for the opening from where the rats came from and finally found a small crack in the exhaust. Because she had been cooking a lot these days, Bai Meiyue didn’t think of closing the exhaust, which allowed these rats to enter her house.

She sighed and then took out some cement to seal these openings. After she was done with it, she also took out several sticky mouse traps and rat killing poison, as well as other traps.

Bai Meiyue wanted to hide these traps on the inside as well as the outside to deal with these rats lest they cause trouble for her. However, just as she finished putting the traps inside and went outside, she heard the sound of sniffling and turned her head only to flinch when she saw the Lei family hiding in the corner.

“What are you doing?” she asked, looking at Lei Yan, who seemed like she had fought a war.

“Sister Bai…” Lei Yan’s expression was not good, as she told Bai Meiyue what happened to them.
