Chapter 121: Change bit by bit
“Mom, where did you get these spring onions?” Bai Meiyue took a seat in the aisle of the kitchen when she noticed a bunch of fresh green onions sitting on the side of the gas stove. They were so fresh and dewy that it looked like they were just plucked.
In this weather, in these conditions, how could her mother get her hands on these fresh green onions? Even if their refrigerator was good, it wasn’t that good.
Her eyes flickered and she turned to look at her mother, who ladled out the hot noodles and placed them in an ice bowl.
“Didn’t you ask me to grow vegetables?” Mother Bai turned to look at Bai Meiyue with a confused look on her face. “It will take some time for the greenhouse to be ready but I thought I could still grow some little things. So, I took some soil and poured it into a small bucket.”
“And guess what! I was able to grow vegetables in it. You don’t know it, Yueyue. I only planted the seeds last night and the green onions grew by the morning. Do you think that the soil you got is special or did it get mutated? How come the seeds are growing so fast?”
Bai Meiyue felt her lips twitch when she heard the words of her mother. Special mutated soil? Though the soil would indeed get mutated, it wouldn’t be a good thing. The plants that were growing outside would soon turn into flesh-eating monsters and would eat anything and everything because of the blood rain.
How could there be such a good thing as plants growing at a rapid pace? This was a punishment from the heavens to the humans for not paying attention to the warning signs.
So why would the mutated soil help the humans?
The reason these spring onions grew so well and quickly it must be because her mother awakened the wood-type supernatural abilities. In the post-apocalyptic world, wood-type supernatural beings were not rare. They were responsible for growing vegetables and fruits in the base and they only specialised in increasing the production of food.
Though her mother didn’t have much defensive ability, this was good as well. At least for the time being, they didn’t have to worry about starving to death. With her mother helping in growing the vegetables, Bai Meiyue no longer had to worry about searching for vegetables the next time she went to look for supplies.
And even if they couldn’t leave the house for several days with her space and her mother’s abilities, Bai Meiyue didn’t need to worry about going hungry. Her mother’s abilities seemed better than the rest of the wood-type supernatural beings. Since that was the case, then her mother would certainly produce a good amount of vegetables.
Vegetables and fruits were quite rare in the apocalyptic world; if they had a surplus, then they could exchange them for crystal nuclei! It was a good plan.
“Maybe it’s because you awakened as well, Mom?” Bai Meiyue tried to point her mother in the right direction. Even though she knew that her mother might not accept it yet, she still tried to prepare her mother.
Sure enough, her mother jumped a little and then looked at Bai Meiyue with a smile on her face.
“Oh dear, do you think it is that easy?” Mother Bai rolled her eyes as she finished frying a few short ribs. “I read in the article that it takes more than just a few tries to awaken. Do you think that our family is blessed by the heavens? How can all of us awaken? Your brothers and you are already awakened and now me too?”
She shook her head and sighed, “How can there be such a good thing? You don’t have to make me feel better, I know that it is really hard to awaken.”
“Well, it is not impossible either,” Bai Meiyue tried to convince her mother.
But she knew that her mother wouldn’t believe her. After all, at the beginning, only 3% of the population was able to awaken as a supernatural being. However, soon this 3% would turn into 70% as the various bases would come up with a vaccine that would be used on newborns.
These vaccines were created with the help of the crystal nuclei and when injected into a child whose immunity system was still developing, it helped in the awakening. Of course, there was also the chance of failing but the benefits offered by the bases were too good for the parents to ignore.
If their child awakened, then they would be able to get 20 catties of rice, 15 catties of flour, and 15 catties of vegetables; how could they not be willing?
Thus, even though there was more than a 30% chance that the child would turn into a zombie, the parents were willing to do it.
Though this vaccination came just before Bai Meiyue died, thus she had no idea if this vaccination idea was successful or not.
Of course, when she wrote that article, she didn’t want her family to be under pressure and left a few leeways. Who would have thought that all of them would awaken? If she had known, then she would not have left those remarks.
“I am not trying to comfort you, Mom. I was just trying to tell you that there is a good chance that you might have also awakened,” Bai Meiyue said to her mother, who didn’t believe her.
Seeing this, Bai Meiyue sighed. She didn’t blame her mother after all; she knew very well that when her mother was still married to Bai Qingshi, that man often looked down on her. Even when he divorced her, Bai Qingshi said some really harsh words to her mother.
He was the one who cheated but in the end, he blamed her mother for not being charming enough. There was also the matter of her grandparents. Because her mother was born as a girl, her grandparents treated her harshly and even said a few harsh words.
One thing led to another and her mother soon became an underconfident woman. Bai Meiyue looked at her mother, who didn’t believe a thing that she had said and didn’t persuade her anymore.
With the world changing, her mother would sooner or later break free.
