Chapter 140: Zap of regret
Lu Yu shuddered in fright when he thought about the consequences of Lu Yin’s actions. If she had succeeded tonight, then he would never be able to look the Lei family in the eyes ever again. He raised his head and looked at his sister, who was huddled in a corner.
His gaze met with Lu Yin, who flinched and lowered her eyes. What else was there to ask? She really tried to attack Lei Yan just now and was caught by Bai Meiyue.
Though enraged, Lu Yu knew that he couldn’t confront his sister out in the open. He could only purse his lips and help the rest of the team collect the gasoline in the tanks.
While the rest of the team was collecting gasoline, Bai Meiyue ran down the street. She chopped down the heads of the zombies and collected the crystal nuclei.
Her expression remained composed as she hacked the zombies to death. As she ran around killing the zombies, she ran into the clothing shop next door and collected some clothes. She also entered the houses that were abandoned and collected some rice and sunflower oil that was left behind by the owner when they ran out of the house.
Though she made it look like she was collecting supplies, Bai Zhan and Bai Jixuan noticed that Bai Meiyue stayed close to a particular alley. Of course, they also noticed Bai Feng, the other illegitimate child of their father.
“Humph,” Bai Jixuan snorted. He wasn’t close to Bai Feng nor did he like him. He only heard that Bai Qingshi had a son with a small maid because he wanted a son whom he could control better. Even though Bai Feng didn’t do anything wrong, Bai Jixuan could never like him because of the pain his existence had brought his mother.
Bai Zhan, on the other hand, calmly glanced at the man and looked away. If he was being honest, he pitied Bai Feng a little. Bai Qingshi was an overly selfish man. Though he had many children, he only cared about Bai Xue.
Thus, Bai Zhan knew that even though Bai Qingshi kept Bai Feng by his side, he must have treated him more as a chess piece of the Bai family than his biological child.
Since he knew more or less about Bai Meiyue’s upbringing, Bai Zhan was certain that Bai Feng must have been treated just the same, maybe even more harshly.
So, even though he didn’t like Bai Feng because of his status as an illegitimate child, he didn’t stop Bai Meiyue from protecting him.
Bai Feng looked at Bai Meiyue’s small back that was protecting him and his eyes softened. He knew that she was protecting him; even though she said all those harsh words about not caring about his life and death, she was still willing to protect him.
The street was sooner cleaned up by Bai Meiyue, and though there were zombies staggering at the end of the street, it would take some time for them to arrive here at their slow speed. Bai Meiyue looked at the time on her watch and saw that it was already close to dawn. The zombies were still at beginner level, which meant that they would become even slower and weaker at dawn.
She headed inside the alley and looked at Bai Feng, who was sitting upright with the support of the wall. She looked at the man and asked him, “Do you want to go back home with us or are you going to stay here?”
Bai Feng’s lips twitched. What did she mean by stay here? If he stayed here, wouldn’t he be turning into the meal of these man-eating monsters? He smiled at Bai Meiyue but his smile was laden with annoyance and anger. This little —
Though Bai Feng was annoyed, he didn’t say anything to Bai Meiyue. He didn’t even notice that he was looking at Bai Meiyue with an even more doting look in his eyes.
“I will be going back with you,” Bai Feng replied. As for his car that was abandoned, he sighed in regret. There was no turning around this situation.
He let go of his arm that was bitten by the zombie and tried to stand up. Even though there was a slight tingling sensation in his arm, he didn’t feel much pain.
When Bai Meiyue saw that the man was having trouble coordinating his movements, she reached out to hold him. However, she had hardly touched him when Bai Meiyue felt a sudden zap and she stepped back.
“You…what did you do?” she rubbed her fingertips and looked at the man.
Bai Feng frowned. He looked at her and then looked down at his arm, which Bai Meiyue had touched. Even though he didn’t feel anything, he realised that there was something wrong with him too. He spread out his hand such that his fingers were pointing upwards and noticed a golden spark on the tip of his fingers.
His brows, if possible, furrowed even more, and he clenched his fingers. As soon as he clenched his fist, the golden sparks crackled and boomed before engulfing his entire hand.
Surprised, Bai Feng raised his fist and hammered it against the wall.
BANG!
CRACK!
The sound of the wall breaking and a crater appearing in the wall echoed in the alley. Bai Feng looked at the large hole in the wall and turned to look at Bai Meiyue with a smile on his lips.
“Yueyue, did you see that?”
However, Bai Meiyue didn’t seem to be in any condition to answer. She looked at the man in shock and wondered if something had gone very wrong. How did this man who awakened an earth-type ability awaken as thunder-type?
Bai Feng also realised that there was something wrong with Bai Meiyue and didn’t force her; instead, he dragged his body out of the alley and turned to look at the zombies that were staggering at the end of the street. His eyes flashed and he rushed towards the horde without even planning his actions.
