Chapter 146: Stubborn to extreme
“I that—”
“I brought her out with me because I wanted her to understand the consequences of her actions.” before Chu Xia could make an excuse, Bai Meiyue interrupted her. “She allowed so many people to live in this building; what’s her plan? Can she kill zombies? Can she collect supplies? If not, then she has just brought a bunch of hungry refugees who will become a threat to my family and me!”
She looked at Bai Xue, who was hiding behind Chu Xia and snickered, “Since she dared to ‘save’ so many people, I wanted to see if she could handle killing a zombie. What’s the matter? Can’t do it? Then why did you bring so many people here and put us all in danger?”
She turned to look at Bai Feng and questioned, “Today they tried to rob me; tomorrow they would try to rob someone else. Bai Feng, there are young and old living in this building now; some of the elderly just want to die peacefully. But because of Bai Xue, even this little thing seems to have turned problematic. What if these people try to attack these elderly and steal their supplies?”
“Don’t forget, people only go after the weak who can’t fight back!”
“No! That won’t happen,” Bai Xue exclaimed. At that moment, she truly hated Bai Meiyue. This woman had pushed her into a corner. If she didn’t intervene now, she was worried that Bai Meiyue would firmly dump this pot of blame on her head.
“Oh, then are they going to look for supplies on their own?” Bai Meiyue questioned with her brow arched.
As soon as she finished speaking, the people who followed behind her and Bai Xue lowered their heads and started shuffling their feet. What else was there to see? They didn’t want to do it!
“This doesn’t concern you,” Bai Xue spoke up after some hesitation. Her eyes were fixated on Bai Feng as if she were waiting for him to speak up and say that he would take care of these people.
But how dare Bai Feng say that? He looked at the many survivors who were almost filling up the entire staircase until they reached almost the top of the next floor.
Bai Meiyue understood what Bai Xue was trying to say and snorted. She turned to look at Bai Feng and waited for him to say something but when he didn’t, she scoffed and said, “Good luck, Bai Feng. Since you have chosen this path, there is nothing that I can say to you. I might as well give you my blessings.”
Her lips curled up in a cruel smirk as she remarked, “You will need it.”
It wasn’t that she was being cruel. It was Bai Feng who was being cruel to himself. He could have said that he couldn’t do it, that he was also human and that it was simply impossible for him to look for supplies for so many people.
But Bai Meiyue knew that the man was stubborn to the point of being seriously frustrating.
Bai Meiyue smiled at Bai Feng, whose expression had darkened by several degrees. She turned around and walked past Chu Xia and Bai Xue. however, just as she was about to climb up the stairs, she paused and looked at the two women who stepped aside at once.
“Wh–what?” Chu Xia looked at Bai Meiyue with a wary gaze.
Hearing her question, Bai Meiyue snorted and walked away. She felt quite upset about letting Bai Xue go. She thought that this woman would either turn into a zombie or die today; she didn’t expect Bai Feng to return so soon. However, Bai Meiyue was optimistic. If she could wake up, then so can Bai Feng.
She just has to wait and see how long it would take for Bai Feng to snap. After all, the number of people Bai Xue had saved was not just one or two. There were more than fifty to sixty people.
It was hard to raise the Bai family alone; how could Bai Feng raise so many people? It would still be easier when there are adequate supplies. But soon these supplies would lessen. Would Bai Feng still be able to bear it then?
“Brother Feng,” Bai Xue looked at Bai Feng. She knew that what she had done was wrong but she didn’t want Bai Feng to think too much. She walked over and tugged on his sleeves before saying to him, “Brother, I didn’t mean to. I just wanted to save these people. You know saving a life is better than building a seven-layer pagoda, right?”
Chu Xia was quite dissatisfied with Bai Xue and her foolish actions but she also admitted that if they had more people, they would be a bit more secure. She turned to look at Bai Feng and spoke in a confronting voice, “Ah Feng, don’t be like Bai Meiyue. That woman has turned completely heartless; just because the world has fallen into chaos, do you think its right for her to abandon others like this?”
“We are different from her. We have a heart; Someone came and asked Xuexue for help—how could she refuse? You know that Xuexue has always been kind since she was a child.”
Chu Xia was a smart woman. At least she knew how to please and calm a man down. If not, she wouldn’t have been able to make a man as selfish as Bai Qingshi like her so much.
She knew that these survivors couldn’t be sent back after all; it would be equivalent to slapping Bai Xue’s face. Though she was furious when she thought about how Xiang Mei took a mile when they only gave her an inch, nothing could be done at that moment.
Bai Feng listened to Chu Xia’s preaching and opened his mouth. He wanted to say something but before he could, Chu Xia clapped her hands and turned to look at the people behind them.
“Let’s go back; we need to fix the door and the sun is going down; if we stay outside, it will be really troublesome.” while she spoke, she turned and took the bags of supplies from Bai Feng. “Let me carry these; you must be tired, Ah Feng.”
Though she said that the truth was that Chu Xia wanted to keep the supplies to herself.
