Chapter 152: Can only rely on oneself
After she finished speaking, Mother Bai looked behind at the people who were helping her son and felt a tad bit guilty. But when she thought about what kind of life they were living at the moment, she suppressed that guilty conscience. Forgive her, dear heavens, but she was just a normal woman with three children. Although she believed in handing out kindness and the universe would double it back, Mother Bai just couldn’t do it at the moment.
The situation was like this already. If she showed her kindness to others, what would happen to her children? She couldn’t be kind to strangers anymore; it would be unkind to her children.
Although the food was enough for the time being, they would finish it sooner or later. If they allowed a few survivors to stay with them, it wouldn’t take long for countless survivors to come looking for them. Mother Bai is not selfish but she is petty. She knew how hard his daughter worked to kill those zombies in the streets and the building. She spent an entire night cleaning it all up.
And yet Xiang Mei brought so many zombies with her and never bothered to clean them up. Even now in the garage, if Bai Meiyue was not careful, then she would have lost her life. So forgive her if she could not be bothered to save these survivors.
“When did I say that they will be living here?” Bai Meiyue turned her head and looked at her mother as she stretched her legs on the couch and rubbed her slightly swollen feet. “They can live in the apartments, which are now empty. Have you forgotten that the half of the people were washed away?”
After the tsunami, those who were completely unprepared on the lower floor either died or went missing. Thus, there were many apartments that were now inhabited.
Mother Bai released a sigh of relief when she heard her daughter say that she didn’t want to take these people in. She patted her chest and said to Bai Meiyue, “I got scared for a second. I thought that you were going to take in these people and let them stay with us.”
“I thought you would be happy that I was showing kindness to them,” Bai Meiyue remarked with a teasing look in her eyes.
“Are you making fun of your mother?” Mother Bai smacked Bai Meiyue’s arm with just the right amount of force. After she finished smacking Bai Meiyue, she sighed and said in a low voice, “What can I say ? Aren’t I worried that our family will become too conspicuous in the eyes of others if we take in these people?”
When Bai Meiyue heard her mother’s words, she had to admit that her mother was indeed wiser; even though she could be naive at some point, she was still smarter than most.
In the apocalypse, there was no lack of survivors. It was like fishing in a muddy pond. No matter where you touch, you would get your hands and clothes dirty. The condition of survivors was the same. As long as you step out, you will find survivors hiding in every corner of the city.
The second they saw a boat, the survivors would rush out to cling to the life-saving boat like a drowning man. Bai Feng was witty but he was not experienced. Thus, he had no idea that the same thing was happening to him. Now that he had taken in a few survivors, it wouldn’t take long for Bai Xue to take in even more freeloaders.
She, who cared about her reputation and loved vanity, wouldn’t think twice before she took in even more people. When that happens, it wouldn’t take long for the boat to topple.
Compared to them, her mother was better. Even though she didn’t know what was at stake, her mother knew how to think carefully.
Inside the greenhouse, Meng Suisui threw the sack of fertiliser on the floor and stopped the surge of nausea that was rushing in her throat. She had never done any work in her life like this before and felt uncomfortable.
Behind her, Meng Qibao, who was turning the soil over, was even more uncomfortable. He couldn’t help but mutter, “If Anzhi had not given our supplies away when we were not at home, nothing like this would have happened.” At least they could have managed a few days.
When Meng Suisui heard her brother’s words, she was even more discomforted. Though she didn’t say it, she blamed Meng Anzhi in her heart just like Meng Qibao. That girl had given away their supplies without asking them and when they confronted her, she cried and made a fuss, saying that she was just helping others out of kindness.
Was this the time to be kind?
Meng Suisui sighed and shook her head before raising her head and looking at Wen Mian.
“Sister Mian, if you are not feeling well, then you can sit down and rest. We will do the rest of the work.”
Next to her, Meng Qibao looked at Meng Suisui, also nodded, and agreed, “That’s right, Sister Mian. We can take care of these things.” As he spoke, he felt a bit bad; he, a man, was having a hard time turning the soil over. Who knows how his sister and Wen Mian were managing this change of events?
“There is no need,” Wen Mian was dressed in a dirty dress, which was once delicate. She dusted her hands and said, “We are the same now. No matter how weak and delicate I was in the past, I can’t stay the same now, can I? I can dump my work on you guys today, but I can’t do it tomorrow, right?”
In the past, Wen Mian didn’t even need to lift a water bottle, so it would be a lie to say that she was not disconcerted with the change but she who came from the countryside, slowly rose to the position of the best actress and also understood that she needed to change herself or else she would be waiting to die.
