Chapter 226: Mutated Dog
Bai Meiyue rolled her eyes before pushing Lei Qian away from her. She said to him, “I can hear you just fine; there is no need for you to push your face into mine!”
This face of his was her weakness. Who asked Little Cai to take after his father instead of her? That little brat, even before he was born, favoured his father more than he favoured his mother. Humph, who carried him for nine months in her belly? Who went through the pain and sufferings of giving birth to a child? And yet the child took after his father.
Because she loved Little Cai more than she loved herself, naturally Lei Qian also had a soft spot in her heart.
Lei Qian was not angry when he was pushed to one side; instead, he licked the inside of Bai Meiyue’s palm, which made her pull her hand away almost immediately.
“Are you a dog?” She snarled while wiping her hands on the jacket that she was wearing.
“Woof, Woof,” Lei Qian barked with a smile on his face before questioning, “What are you looking for?” Though she didn’t say anything, Lei Qian knew that there was something else that she was looking for other than the mutated cows.
“I told you —”
“I know that you are looking for mutated cows but other than that,” he blinked his eyes and looked at Bai Meiyue with a knowing look in his eyes. He didn’t call her a liar outright but his meaning was quite clear.
Realising that she couldn’t hide it from him, Bai Meiyue rolled her eyes and replied calmly, “I am looking for the valuable antique that was found in this village before the apocalypse started.”
“Antique? Why do you need an antique for?” Lei Qian asked with confusion brimming in his tone. He could understand her love for gold and diamonds, but why was she looking for antiques?
He looked at her and asked, “Yueyue, do you like collecting antiques?”
Now that he thought about it, he remembered that Lei Yan told him about Bai Meiyue taking a precious antique from their family in exchange for helping her collect supplies.
Back then, he didn’t think too much. He thought that Bai Meiyue was simply asking for the antique in exchange to make Lei Yan independent lest she start depending on her. But it seemed like Bai Meiyue really liked antiques!
“I won’t say that I like them but if someone is offering, then I will take them without any problem,” Bai Meiyue replied vaguely. She turned her face away from him and rushed to the zombie that staggered over to where the two of them were standing.
She hacked down one and chopped three before collecting the crystal nuclei and moving forward.
She then heard Lei Qian say, “Why don’t you stop your second brother?”
“From what? Gruelling you?” Bai Meiyue chuckled as she walked forward. She continued to clean up the path in front of them and at the same time she kept an eye on the notification screen of the system. However, even after cleaning up more than ten zombies, she didn’t see the system making a sound, which made her wonder if the antique was really taken away by someone.
The thought alone was enough to make Bai Meiyue annoyed.
“No, from intervening in your matters,” Lei Qian corrected her; he killed the zombies that Bai Meiyue didn’t clean up. Before turning to look at Bai Meiyue, “I think you don’t like it when he does that.”
Of course, Bai Meiyue didn’t like it when her family intervened and questioned her decisions as if they believed she couldn’t do it. She was more than capable of making her own decisions but because she owed a lot to her brothers and mother, she allowed them to get away with a lot of things.
Thus, even though they sometimes overstepped their boundaries by treating her like a child, Bai Meiyue knew that it was because her brothers never got a chance to grow up with her and protect her; thus, they treated her like she was a child.
Her elder brother was still a bit better, as he allowed and accepted her decisions but her second brother—well, he had always been a little firecracker. Anything he disliked, he made noises loud enough to make people know that he didn’t like what was going on.
“Why does it matter to you?” Bai Meiyue turned and remarked. “You have your own trouble to worry about, so why bother with mine?”
“Because it makes you upset and I don’t like it,” he hated that Bai Meiyue was this understanding of everything; clearly, she was the one who had the rights to decide what she wanted for herself but everyone around her treated her as if she was a porcelain doll; a little push and she would break into countless fragments.
Bai Meiyue was stronger than that; she had proven it and she had also more or less shown how she disliked it when someone tried to make her rethink her decisions.
And yet Bai Meiyue bit back on what she wanted to say and didn’t question and quibble with her family.
“I also dislike you following me but here we are.”
“No, you don’t,” Lei Qian smiled and touched the tip of her nose with his fingertip. “You don’t really verbalize your likes and dislikes; if you hated me that much, you would have beheaded me by now.”
“Hey, if that’s what you want —”
Growl.

The sound of a dog growling echoed in the silent surroundings and Bai Meiyue whipped around; she forgot what she was saying and crouched down to look behind the wall of the small hut.
Her eyes fell on the dog that was the size of a large sheep and Bai Meiyue backed up a little.
“It’s a mutated dog.” Lei Qian followed her gaze and pursed his lips solemnly. “Is it dangerous?”
“Very.” Bai Meiyue replied with a serious expression; this wasn’t good.
