Chapter 249: Taking a break
The reason Bai Meiyue was being this cautious was simple. Before Doomsday started, there were countless people who were affected by the Doomsday virus, and all of them got admitted to the hospital. They were the first batch of zombies that appeared after the apocalypse broke all over the world.
Since that was the case, there was a very good chance that the hospital might have multiple high-ranking zombies. With these mutated zombies along with the ordinary zombies, the amount of risk would certainly get higher.
Bai Meiyue wanted to rush to the hospital, rescue people and collect the crystal nuclei. However, she also understood that there was no point in rushing things. Even if she was in a hurry to return home, she needed to first take care of her safety.
Even if there were a number of ability users in her team, Bai Meiyue knew that even with these many ability users, she could not charge right inside the hospital. Especially not when she had to take care of the children who came with Shen Zhen.
When she saw Shen Zhen hesitating, she said to her, “Look at the children; they have been running around with you since the morning. Don’t you think that they need a little rest?”
Upon hearing Bai Meiyue mention the children, Shen Zhen turned and looked at the small children who had followed her. Obviously they were very scared but these children were abandoned by their family either before or during the apocalypse and were worried that they would be abandoned once again.
Thus, even though they were terrified, these children knew that they needed to work hard or else they would become a burden on others. They came to hunt supplies with her because these kids didn’t want to be thrown out by the adults once again just because they were eating and not doing any work.
Shen Zhen sighed and agreed with Bai Meiyue. “There is a small inn not far from here; we can go there and rest a little.”
Seeing this, Bai Meiyue turned to look at Lei Qian and the rest before saying to them, “That’s enough; let’s go. We should take some rest now.”
They have been hunting for supplies and nuclei since morning; even if they were skilled in killing zombies, they still needed to care about their bodies.
As soon as Lei Qian heard Bai Meiyue’s voice, he stopped killing zombies and retreated along with the rest. When Lu Yin saw this, she was quite dissatisfied. Clearly, Lei Qian was the leader of the team but he was still willing to listen to Bai Meiyue. As the leader of the team, it was simply too embarrassing on Lei Qian’s part.
However, even though Lu Yin was dissatisfied, she didn’t say anything. The team was now rather respectful towards Bai Meiyue and she didn’t want to be ostracised by them. If she was isolated, then Lu Yin was worried that she would never be able to follow Lei Qian and the rest.
The rest of the team followed Bai Meiyue’s arrangement and drove to the inn, about which Shen Zhen had told Bai Meiyue. Of course, no one bothered to care about the many survivors who were stuck inside the mall and calling them to come and deal with the rest of the zombies.
Shen Zhen peered at the people who were begging for help but before she could sympathize with them, Bai Meiyue said to her, “Don’t think about it too much. Clearly, most of the zombies have been killed by our team. There are not many left. As long as they have the courage they can kill them in time, these survivors can run away.”
“Anyway, if children are brave enough to face these monsters, so can these people.”
It wasn’t that Bai Meiyue was exceptionally heartless but when she saw how kids as young as the ones who were following Shen Zhen were running around and escaping with supplies, she just couldn’t summon the mercy to save these people.
Even a ten-year-old knew that he needed to go out and fend for himself if he wanted to survive, so what were these people waiting for? Why were they hoping for someone to come and rescue them?
When Shen Zhen heard Bai Meiyue’s words, she too stopped feeling merciful. Just now, when they were trapped in the mall, these people were the ones who complained the most.
They even blamed her for bringing children with her.
One of the big men even threatened the little girls and said that if they dared to make any noise, then he would throw them out.
And when they told them that they wanted to go out, they were even more ruthless. They kicked them all out roughly as if they were worried about zombies running in; these survivors didn’t even give them the turn to get ready.
If not for the timely appearance of Bai Meiyue and her team, Shen Zhen and the rest would have become the meals of those zombies.
These people didn’t deserve her kindness.
Even Lu Yin, who was known for her kindness, stayed quiet. If it was before, she would have spoken up to show how kind she was, but after being taught a lesson by Bai Meiyue, she didn’t dare to cause unnecessary fuss.
More importantly, she was too focused on Lei Qian to care about anyone else. Thus, with no one causing any trouble, their group drove to the small inn, which Shen Zhen mentioned to Bai Meiyue.
The zombies were taken care of by Bai Meiyue and the rest.
Once the inn was more or less cleared up, Shen Zhen stepped out of the car along with the children who were sitting at the back of the SUV with her. They looked at the cleared up and sighed in relief. Even though the floor of the inn was splattered with blood, it was still better than looking at the man eating monsters!
Shen Zhen was telling the children not to run around when her gaze fell on Jiang Haidai. Her eyes widened and she exclaimed, “It’s you!”
