Chapter 274: His wife
With the two of them taking care of the zombies, it didn’t take more than a few hours for Bai Meiyue and Lei Qian to clear up the zombies in the inpatient zone. However, as soon as they stepped inside the corridor, they suddenly realised that there was something weird.
The corridor after being cleaned up was weirdly silent, as if there was no one in the corridor. Bai Meiyue turned and looked at Shen Zhen before asking, “Are you sure that there are people here?”
It wasn’t that Bai Meiyue didn’t trust Shen Zhen, but the corridor was way too quiet to the point that if they were to drop a pin, they would hear the sound of it. Bai Meiyue frowned and turned to look around the corridor; she had a feeling that there was some kind of danger lingering in this place.
Shen Zhen was also troubled. She was sure that the corridor yesterday was filled with zombies and the voices of the children but now it was suspiciously quiet, which made her wonder if something happened.
When Bai Meiyue saw that Shen Zhen had no response to her question, she said to the rest of the team, “Don’t lower your guard. It seems like there is something wrong.”
Everyone took her warning seriously. Even Dacheng, who looked down on Bai Meiyue, turned vigilant and looked around the corridor as if he was waiting for something to pop out and attack them.
Their team gathered together and slowly cleared up the few zombies that popped in front of them once in a while but the deeper they went inside the corridor, the more Bai Meiyue’s brows furrowed. Seeing her frown so hard, Lei Qian asked, “What’s the matter? Is something wrong?”
“It feels weird,” Bai Meiyue replied with her eyes flickering. She looked left and then right before saying to him, “This silence is a bit eerie. Though I can sense that there are survivors, their presence is marred by something.”
Bai Meiyue unleashed her senses and detected the presence of the survivors on the floor. They were indeed in the incubation room, but before that, there was a very thick, bloodthirsty aura surrounding the end of the corridor, which made Bai Meiyue a bit spooked.
If she was not wrong, then this aura was very similar to a level two zombie!
They slowly made their way towards the neonatal intensive care unit, and Bai Meiyue took out her saber sword that she was carrying with her. The closer the unit became, the more intense the bloodlust aura became and Bai Meiyue’s breathing stagnated.
The glaring red lights over the ICU flickered, casting an eerie glow in the corridor, making everyone suck in a breath. Just as they turned around the corner, an iron door banged open, startling everyone.
They all turned to look at the door that opened somewhere far from where they were standing. A tall woman with silvery grey hair stood at the other end of the corridor. Her silver locks were covered in blood, and so was her blue hospital gown. Blood was splattered all over her gown, which made her look even more terrifying.
The woman had a calm look on her face but Bai Meiyue saw that her eyes were pitless black.
She stopped and fell back. “Turn back. Turn back now, everyone!” She shouted and everyone in the team rushed back; only Director Feng rushed forward as he shouted, “Nan Zhi! Nan Zhi!”
He didn’t pay attention to anything Bai Meiyue was telling him; he was only worried about one thing and that was to get to the woman in front of him. He raised his voice and questioned, “Why didn’t you tell me that you were alive? Nan Zhi, say something!”
The woman in the blood-splattered gown turned to look at Director Feng and smiled. Her smile was bone chilling as it nearly peeled off her skin, but Director Feng didn’t seem to notice as he continued to walk towards the woman.
Bai Meiyue knew that somewhere in his mind, Director Feng knew that his wife was gone but he just couldn’t believe it. His mind had shut down and he couldn’t accept the reality.
“Pull him back! That woman has turned into a level two zombie!”
Compared to the level one zombies, level two zombies were more powerful and strong. They were even faster than humans and had much more wit than the other low-ranking zombies. What was more, the rate of deterioration was way lower in level two zombies, which made them look almost like humans.
It was no wonder that Director Feng didn’t believe that his wife had turned into a zombie.
However, the blood on her gown and hands showed that she was no longer human; that woman had long turned into a monster. So much blood—how many humans and zombies did this woman feed on for her to turn into level two zombies?
Yun Chuan rushed to bring Director Feng back, but he was still a step too late. The level two zombie pounced on the two men with her fangs bared. Her long fingers reached out and held Director Feng’s throat, causing the man to tumble down along with Yun Chuan.
Seeing this, Yun Chuan immediately whipped the level two zombie with a vine. If it was a normal zombie, then its head would have rolled off her shoulder, but this woman had now evolved into a level two zombie. She simply hitched her head back on her shoulders and started walking towards them, and soon she was running towards their team.
Lei Qian raised his sword to kill the woman but Director Feng stopped him.
“No! She is my wife,” he begged with a tearful gaze. “Please don’t kill her.”
When Lei Qian heard his words, he hesitated but Bai Meiyue didn’t. She stepped forward and raised her hand in the air. An ice shard formed in front of her, which she sent in the direction of the woman.
BANG!
