Chapter 279: Doctors are the hands of God
“What are you doing?” She asked, suppressing her heartbeat that had skittered and turned a tad bit wild when she saw the man feed the baby. Why did he have to look so cool and attentive while doing something so simple?

“Ah they said that they didn’t have enough hands and asked me to feed the children,” replied Lei Qian with a smile on his lips. He comforted the baby in his hand when the little one started to cry and then turned to look at Bai Meiyue before saying, “Aren’t they cute?”

Bai Meiyue calmly looked at the child in his arms and didn’t say anything. Maybe it was because her son was not in her arms; Bai Meiyue didn’t like looking at other children. She simply hummed and turned to look at the children in the incubators. There were more than ten children in the incubators, which meant that they would have to take these incubators along with them.

However, that was not the problem.

Bai Meiyue raised her head and looked at Shen Zhen before saying to her, “Are you sure that you want to take these babies with you? The outside world is tainted with the doomsday virus. If these babies are taken out, there is a chance that they will turn into zombies.”

“Don’t worry, even if they die, we will not blame you,” it was Doctor Cui who answered instead of Shen Zhen.

“Doctor Cui!” Zhou Hongbei looked at him in shock but the man simply glanced at him and stated, “There is no need to look at me. This is not the time to think with your heart, Doctor Zhou. I know that you want to save every child but some things are not in our hands and it all depends on natural selection.”

When Bai Meiyue heard his words, she raised a corner of her mouth. Natural selection. She had to admit that Doctor Cui saw things thoroughly and knew what kind of decisions to make. Even though they sounded harsh, the man was not wrong.

“Doctor Cui is right, Doctor Zhou,” said Shen Zhen with a helpless expression. “These children cannot stay inside the incubator room for the next few years of their lives, and we cannot be sure that they will not turn into zombies just because they grew up. Maybe they will still turn into zombies after contacting the outside air.”

“And it’s impossible to keep the sterile atmosphere for more than six months.” Doctor Cui added sternly. “The machines are running on the backup power banks but they will not run for more than six months. Do you think that we can keep the babies inside the incubator room? Its high time we take them out.”

Zhou Hongbei knew that the two of them were right but he just couldn’t help but feel sad. Three out of ten babies were already dead and the fourth one had turned into a zombie; there was no way it would grow up.

Now, more babies would die. He couldn’t help but feel sad over it.

“What do you mean taking the babies out?” Dacheng who stepped inside the incubator room asked with a frown. “Where are you taking the babies?”

“I am taking the babies with me.” Bai Meiyue glanced at the man who was questioning her. The way he spoke, his tone and authority made her frown. It was as if Dacheng took him as the leader of the team. Though she was not too keen to take the position, Bai Meiyue would rather take it than hand it over to Dacheng.

Dacheng sputtered, “You cannot take the babies with you! How can you even think of taking the babies with us?” he looked at Bai Meiyue as if he was looking at a fool and stated, “Do you even know how much milk powder a baby needs in a day? Much less ten of them. And we also need to think of a way to collect supplies for the medical staff. Where will we get the supplies to support them?”

Lu Yin also agreed with him. “Thats right. Do you think that raising these kids is a simple task? And they are not the only ones.” She cast a disapproving gaze at the orphans and stated, “There are some more pieces of burden attached.”

Bai Meiyue was not surprised when she heard the rejection. After all, in the apocalypse, children and the elderly were the last to be taken care of. There was no government, and the army had to retreat and collect itself before they could even start a rescue mission.

But even then, there were no hospitals or orphanges or old age homes to take care of the children and the elderly. After all, they were the weakest links of a base and hardly anyone took care of them.

It wasn’t until that organization came up with the blood pills that they started looking for orphans and the elderly to test those pills on them; only then were arrangements made for them.

“Who are you to worry about these things?” Bai Meiyue heard Shen Zhen snap. The woman crossed her arms and came to stand in front of Dacheng and Lu Yin. She said to them in a sombre voice, “We don’t need you to raise them. Miss Bai is willing to help us, which means that they are her and my responsibility. Its not like we are asking you to take care of these babies, are we?”

“Not to mention we are doctors,” stated Doctor Cui with a calm voice. “Even if you are awakened users, you still need to rely on us medical helpers in case you are injured, right? Even if you are not willing to raise us. We can raise ourselves in one way or another. Medical skills are something that can be sold no matter what the time.”

Bai Meiyue agreed with what Doctor Cui said. This man had no idea how correct he was!
