Chapter 37: A mother’s senses

“Mom!” When Bai Meiyue saw the yellow-faced woman, she couldn’t help but cry. She threw herself at the woman and hugged her tight. “Mom, mom… I am so glad that you are alright. I am sorry, Mom… I am sorry. I was wrong!”

Yan Wanning’s eyes turned red when she heard her daughter cry. She hugged Bai Meiyue back and immediately coaxed her, “Don’t cry, don’t cry. It is your mother who is at fault; I should have fought harder with that bastard. I thought that he would treat you better; after all, no lion would eat his cub–wuu, who would have thought that ….”

She trailed off and didn’t dare to speak anymore. Her poor daughter had truly suffered. If Bai Qingshi was in front of her, she would have turned him into a eunuch such that he would never harm anyone again.

“It’s alright, Yueyue. There is no need to cry anymore,” Bai Zhan placatingly said. “Look aren’t we fine now?”

Bai Meiyue shook her head and turned to look at her two brothers, who stood behind her mother with red eyes. She let go of her mother and hugged her brothers.

“Brother Zhan, Brother Zixuan, you are finally here. I am sorry; it’s my fault. I shouldn’t have ignored you; it’s all my fault!”

No one knew why Bai Meiyue was crying so sadly. The entire family couldn’t help but wonder what kind of grievances Bai Meiyue had suffered under the hands of Bai Qingshi and his mistress.

At the same time, they felt guilty for not being able to catch the fastest train. If they knew that Bai Meiyue was so aggrieved, then they would have taken a flight instead, even if it meant using the last bit of their savings. Of course they did not dare to touch the money that they got after selling the land, as it all belonged to Bai Meiyue.

Lei Qian, who had brought Yan Wanning and the two brothers, on the other hand, thought that the reason Bai Meiyue was crying was because she was bullied by him. She couldn’t say or do anything to him as he was the heir of the Lei family; thus she released all her frustration and sad emotions in front of her family.

Just as everyone was wondering how to make Bai Meiyue stop crying, Bai Meiyue, who was crying as if the world was coming to an end, suddenly stopped crying. They all wondered what happened until they saw her looking at the two little boys who seemed to be on the verge of crying as well.

“Auntie, are you hurt?” Bai Qian Han asked tentatively. “I will give you candy, so stop crying.”

Bai Jiuque didn’t say anything; he simply held onto the hands of his twin brother and looked at Bai Meiyue carefully.

Bai Meiyue realised that she had scared the children, so she immediately let go of her brother and wiped her tears. She smiled at her two nephews and shook her head before saying, “I am not hurt…I am just too happy.”

Her words only made the two boys even more confused, why was she crying if she was happy?

“Alright, stop crying,” Yan Wanning wiped her tears and said to Bai Meiyue, “Go inside; we will discuss the rest of the matter inside. Look at you rushing outside without even wearing slippers.”

She then turned to look at Lei Qian and said to him, “Thank you, young man. If you hadn’t helped us, we would still be stuck at the station.”

Only then did Bai Meiyue raise her head and look at Lei Qian, who was standing outside her house. She frowned when she saw him and questioned her mother, “Mom, where did you run into Master Lei?”

“I saw them standing at the station,” instead of letting Yan Wanning reply, Lei Qian answered. “Your mother looks a bit like you, which is why I asked her if she was looking for you. It was quite a coincidence that I was driving home as well so I gave your family a ride.”

He cleared up the matter as he was worried that Bai Meiyue would think that he was stalking her and her family.

“That’s right; he was really helpful, as the taxis never stopped for us,” Yan Wanning said with a smile on her face. She turned to look at Lei Qian before saying to him, “Little Qian, don’t hold back on our account. I really don’t know how to thank you this time around. Come on, come on in. Even though we don’t have much, we can still offer you some tea.”

She had brought some good tea from the village that Lei Qian might not find in the city.

Lei Qian, however, shook his head. He still had some concerns; throughout the ride he dared not tell Yan Wanning and her sons the truth about him and Bai Meiyue. He only told them that Bai Meiyue was his neighbour and nothing else.

How dare he tell Yan Wanning that it was him who bullied her daughter? Even if he had the guts of a tiger, he would have still meowed in front of Yan Wanning and Bai Meiyue’s brothers, who looked strong and sturdy.

So, while facing Yan Wanning and Bai Meiyue’s brothers, he was filled with guilt and didn’t think it was right for him to enter the house to have tea.

But under Yan Wanning’s insistence, he had no choice but to obediently follow her inside.

When Yan Wanning entered the house, she was quite stunned to see the expensive layout and asked, “Yueyue, why are you living in this place? Didn’t you say that you had no money?”

Bai Meiyue felt a bit guilty when she heard Yan Wanning’s question and beside her, Lei Qian felt even more guilty.

She said to her mother, “It’s nothing, Mother; this is just a little compensation that my company gave to me.”

As soon as she finished speaking, Yan Wanning’s eyes narrowed. She might be a village woman but she was not foolish; this house looked really expensive. Why would a company give their employee such a good house?

Yan Wanning had long learnt that all businessmen were without a conscience!

So, if Bai Meiyue’s company gave her daughter such a good house, it could only mean one thing—her daughter was bullied really badly!

Even if Bai Meiyue and Lei Qian didn’t say anything, Yan Wanning had already thought about a lot of things. Her expression changed again and again, which made Bai Meiyue worried.

“Mom?”

“That damn bastard!”
