Chapter 50: A vicious mother

Bai Meiyue frowned when she saw that her mother was just as confused as she. She turned to look at the two kneeling boys and asked them tentatively, “Was it your mother who told you that if you eat meat, you will be sent away?”

Though Bai Meiyue had not lived with her mother and two brothers, she knew that it was impossible for her brothers or Yan Wanning to threaten these little kids and stop them from eating meat.

Bai Zhan loved his sons so much that he never stopped looking for them in the post-apocalyptic world and even died while searching for them. And doubting Bai Jixuan would be even more foolish, as her second brother couldn’t wait to dote on his nephews every second of his life.

The same could be said for Yan Wanning; her mother obviously loved Bai Qian Han and Bai Ji Que more than her life. So, how could she starve them?

Thus, the only one left was Fang Qing!

Bai Qian Han hesitated but after a while decided to come clean. Though his mother kept telling him that his aunt was not a good woman, Bai Qian Han couldn’t help but think otherwise.

After all, his aunt obviously treated him and his brother better than their mother.

“Mom—Mom told us that if a family is letting their children eat meat, then they are thinking of selling them,” Bai Qian Han confessed. “She told us that she gave us only vegetables and no meat because she loves us and doesn’t want to sell us. And only naughty children eat meat—she—she asked us to be good kids and eat only vegetables. And if we acted like naughty children, she would sell us to the landlord.”

He paused and then softly added, “One time Jixue got greedy and took a bite of spicy and sweet pork belly that Mother cooked for Uncle, and she dragged Jixue to the black market to sell him.”

Bai Jixue shivered when he heard the words of his brother; he was still quite traumatised because of that incident.

“Why didn’t you tell me this?!” Yan Wanning felt her heartache when she realised what kind of lies her daughter-in-law had fed to her grandsons. Thinking about how terrified her two grandsons might have been when Fang Qing dragged Bai Jixue to the black market, Yan Wanning felt furious.

Even Bai Zhan and Bai Jixuan were stunned.

“Your mother—she never let you eat meat?” Bai Zhan asked with a look of disbelief on his face. Then what about all that money she took from him on the pretext that she wanted to give a good life to their sons?

Bai Qian Han and Bai Jixuan shook their heads in response and Bai Zhan felt all the blood rush to his head.

His vision went black and he nearly passed out due to the sudden rush of anger.

“Brother!” Bai Jixuan reached out and caught Bai Zhan by his arm before he could fall on the floor.

Bai Meiyue also rushed forward and helped Bai Zhan.

The two siblings half dragged and half pulled Bai Zhan to the small couch, where they helped him sit down.

“Brother Zhan, there is no need for you to hurt yourself like this,” Though she said that, Bai Meiyue knew that Bai Qian Han and Bai Jixue were the apple of her brother’s eye; how could he not be angry?

“That’s right, Brother,” Bai Jixuan snarled. “If you want to hurt someone, then you might as well hurt that woman. I knew that woman was nothing good. See? She actually harmed Han’er and Xue’er like this.”

“It’s my fault.” Yan Wanning wiped her eyes with her sleeves. “I should have paid attention to how that woman was raising you two. I thought that no woman would ever harm her children; I never thought that she would be so ruthless to her own sons for the sake of that good-for-nothing brother of hers.”

Bai Qian Han and Bai Jixue were stunned to see the reactions of the adults.

Bai Jixue clutched his sleeves and then looked at his father before asking, “Daddy, did we do something wrong?”

“No, you didn’t,” Bai Meiyue turned around and picked up Bai Jixue in her arms. She said to him, “The one who did wrong is your mother. She was the one who lied to you. Did your uncle not eat meat? Did your mother say that he was a bad person?”

“No, mother said that her brother is really good.”

“See?” Bai Meiyue patted Bai Qian Han on the head while speaking to the two children. “Your mother lied because she was greedy and wanted to eat all the meat herself. In fact, those who do not share the good things are the ones who are bad.”

“Then is Mommy bad?” Bai Jixue asked nervously.

Bai Meiyue simply smiled as she comforted Bai Jixue, “I don’t know whether your mother is good or bad; the one who can decide this is you and your brother. All I can tell the two of you is that you two are our family’s little treasures. There is no need for you to starve yourself because of someone’s lies.”

Bai Meiyue’s words touched Bai Qian Han and Bai Jixue.

This was the first time they were called little treasures.

Their mother always told them that they had ruined her life and they have to work hard for the sake of making it up to her. She had never said such warm and loving words to them.

When Bai Zhan saw his sons looking confused and lost as if they had never heard such words, he felt ashamed and embarrassed. As a man, Bai Zhan thought that as long as he worked hard and earned decent money, he would be able to give a proper life to his sons.

He never thought that despite taking so much money from him and his mother, she treated their sons in such a ruthless manner.

He sighed and stood up before holding Bai Qian Han in his arms. He looked at his two sons and agreed with Bai Meiyue, “Your aunt is right; you are your father’s treasure. So what if your mother doesn’t treat you well? Your father is still here.”

Bai Qian Han and Bai Jixue’s eyes turned red and they couldn’t help but start crying. So, their father really loved them?

It seemed like their mother was really a big liar!
