Chapter 53: Rise in prices
Lei Qian didn’t doubt Bai Meiyue’s words because he knew that she was not the kind of woman who would bother or waste her time just to pull a prank on him. If she took her time to share this information with him, then it could only mean that this information was important and useful.
He opened the small storage cabinet and then threw the guns that he had kept inside of the small compartment. Father Lei and Mother Lei squeaked as they caught hold of the guns while Lei Yan looked at the gun in her hands with a terrified look on her face.
She was only sixteen years old this year and yet her brother forced her to fight a bloody battle.
Lei Yan looked at her brother and gulped. “Do I really have to do this?”
In response, her brother actually opened the window on her side and threatened, “Start shooting or else I will throw you out of the car.”
That night, the Lei family faced the most ridiculous night of their lives. On the other side, Bai Meiyue also couldn’t fall asleep all night. After all, she was also worried about Lei Qian; even though she didn’t have any feelings for him, that man was her son’s father.
They shared a bond that, despite having no relationship or feelings between the two of them, was stronger than most. So how could she not worry about that man?
However, as she browsed the internet, she realised that the news related to Cloud City had been blocked. Even the information about the rising water levels and the sea level getting higher and higher was missing.
Bai Meiyue pursed her lips when she looked at the useless information that was displayed on the screen and knew that the officials were trying to fool the citizens. She was not surprised, as the same thing happened in her last life; it wasn’t until half of the city was submerged in water after the tsunami that the officials realised that they could no longer control this situation. Bai Meiyue tapped on all the links that were available on the internet.
She knew that there was no point in relying on the officials and decided to check out the barter system again. Though she was prepared for the tsunami, if possible, she would like it better if she could arrange for those safety pods that were shown in the sci-fi movies.
These pods were made from materials like titanium with a bunch of features that involved an oxygen system as well as a navigation and anchoring system. There were also shock absorbers and stabilisation systems that would work just fine when the tsunami hit the city.
The problem was that she was still at the second level, which meant that she could not post a barter request and straight-up demand what she wanted; she could only look around and hope that her luck would shine!
Bai Meiyue wondered if her luck would be as good as it was the last time when she wanted something to collect information on those scumbags but alas!
Even after looking around for a long time, she couldn’t find anything!
Bai Meiyue was regretful; however, she did not lose hope. The barter system had all kinds of hosts; she was sure that she would be able to get her hands on those pods.
The entire night, Bai Meiyue continued to browse through the links that were posted on the internet before finally finding a small piece of useful information.
Because it was posted by an unknown blogger, no one took it seriously but Bai Meiyue, who had lived through the zombie apocalypse, read this small post very carefully.
According to the blogger, the nuclear power plant had been dumping all kinds of waste in the sea that flowed along the border of the cloud city.
However, a month ago, there was an explosion that led to the deaths of more than forty workers. But instead of giving compensation to the families of these dead workers, they dumped the bodies of these victims in the ocean and sued the families of these victims in return under the pretext that they made a mistake and caused the company to suffer a great loss.
Once Bai Meiyue finished speaking, she clicked her tongue.
“No wonder such a disaster happened,” Bai Meiyue muttered with a hint of regret in her voice. If those workers died due to the nuclear explosion, who knows what kind of nuclear reaction and mutations went through their bodies after the corpses were so carelessly disposed of?
And she was quite certain that it was this careless disposal of the corpses that led to the mutations of those rats who later became the carriers of the virus.
Since this incident happened a month ago, there was nothing that could be done.
The next morning when Bai Meiyue stepped out of her room, she found that her brothers had gone to the company once again and shook her head before heading out of the house and to the small store that wasn’t far from the building.
Though she had enough resources, there was no need for her to stop storing, right?
Almost ten minutes later, Bai Meiyue arrived at the Daily Supermarket. She got out of the car and headed inside the building.
The Daily supermarket was located at the bottom of the mountain; thus, the water level hadn’t reached the point where it would cause trouble for customers. With the water only reaching to their ankles, there were still a bunch of people who were shopping at the supermarket.
Most of the city seemed to have come to this supermarket, and the entire place was crowded like a can of anchovies.
“Everyone get in a line!” The salesperson who was holding a loudspeaker stood at the front of the supermarket. “The price of the items is marked on each of the boxes; there is no point in haggling. So please don’t haggle with the workers. Now please line up and enter the supermarket in an orderly manner.”

Bai Meiyue looked at the line and clicked her tongue, the apocalypse hadn’t even started and the situation was already going out of control!
