Chapter 100: Chapter 100: The Competition for Disciples Begins!
Josef looked in the direction Dalton pointed and saw the vice dean who had just been jesting with him. His expression changed, and he pretended not to care as he said, “What are you doing with William’s information card? Give it to me.”
“Why should I return it to you?”
Odysseus’s face remained calm as a pure white card slowly floated out of his hand and hovered in mid-air. “This is my disciple’s information card.”
“Alright, alright, you old man. I was going to leave you some dignity, but you’re stealing my disciple, huh?”
Josef could no longer contain his anger and reached out to grab the information card in front of Odysseus.
“What’s the rush!”
With a wave of his hand, Odysseus conjured a breeze with wind elements, pushing Josef to the other side of the room. As the vice dean of the Fis Royal Mage academy, Odysseus was indeed more powerful than Josef.
“I’m curious, Josef, why do you want to take William as your disciple? As far as I know, his performance in the academy was quite average,” Odysseus said, holding William’s identity card in his hand and asking curiously.
On the surface, the two were fighting over William’s information card, but the focus was not on who ended up with the card. The goal was to make the other give up on taking William as a disciple. After all, if it was just about the card, the academy could simply issue another one.
Clearly, both believed that with their status and strength, William would not refuse to become their disciple.
“His talent in magical runes is exceptional, okay?” Joseph replied irritably. After all, although Odysseus was an arcane mage, he was not very skilled at intermediate magic runes.
“And why are you competing with me?” Odysseus chuckled without directly answering.
Since meeting William, he had kept this matter in mind. After handling related affairs at the academy, he came here to get William’s information card.
After all, based on what he learned later, William had always been low-key at the academy, and his classmates thought he lacked talent, always just a common bronze mage.
But in his eyes, it was different! William spent so long at the bronze rank not because he was accumulating knowledge and fundamentals to become an arcane mage. And Odysseus, being an arcane mage himself, knew all too well the difficulty of becoming one.
Honestly, before meeting William, if someone had told him that someone could become an arcane mage at the bronze rank, Josef would have laughed at their ignorance.
But when William appeared before him, he had to admit, there might indeed be such prodigious individuals! So, after returning to the academy and confirming that William had not become the formal disciple of any high-ranking mage, Odysseus had already entertained the idea of taking him as a disciple.
As for his previous disciples? Heh, a bunch of misfits with bleak prospects of breaking through to the gold rank.
The fact that William had become an arcane mage could not be casually mentioned. After all, anyone would recognize William’s terrifying talent if they knew a bronze-level mage had become an arcane mage.
Becoming a gold mage was just his baseline, and he even had the chance to touch the legendary realm.
Naturally, Odysseus would not easily tell others, but the current situation was troublesome.
Seeing Joseph’s demeanor, he was obviously not willing to give up easily.
What a hassle!
Odysseus sighed. What do you do when the disciple you want to take has too good of a talent? “You, this guy!”
Josef was getting angry. “I’ve already explained my reasons to you. Why are you still beating around the bush? Do you really think I’m afraid of you?”
With a wave of his hand, a pure black staff adorned with shimmering magic gems appeared in his grasp. If William had been present, he would have been astonished by the dense array of magic gems embedded in the staff.
Indeed, there were five or six high-level magic gems equivalent in value to emeralds, all of the same fire element type, not to mention the other lower-grade magic gems and the mithril and other precious materials used for engraving magic runes. Just this staff alone was worth about a hundred thousand gold coins.
Then, a silver magic robe appeared on Josef in an instant. This was not like ordinary clothing; the magical fluctuations and aura it emitted proved it to be an exceptionally valuable piece of magic equipment.
Besides, various magical auras flickered on Josef, with rings, necklaces, earrings, and brooches—all of them high-level magic equipment. Money was no object for Josef, a master of magic runes, and he naturally armed himself to the teeth.
Dalton, standing aside, was nearly blinded by the dazzling light from Josef’s treasures. “So, Josef, you’ve been rich all this time, yet you’ve been coming to me claiming to be poor. If I agree to your requests for extra funding next time, I’ll be be named monkey!” Odysseus felt a headache coming on but still held his staff in his hand.

There’s no peaceful way out of this! He didn’t want to fight with Josef, the tough nut, but giving up on making William his disciple? “Do you really think I’m afraid of trouble? Today, I’ll let you know that I didn’t become the vice dean for nothing!”
As the tension between Odysseus and Josef thickened, Dalton urgently intervened, “Don’t fight here, go to the Dueling Arena!”
Damn it, if you start fighting here, what will become of my office? It was all repaired with my precious gold coins! Josef snorted coldly and flew out the window.
Naturally, Odysseus couldn’t show weakness and followed Josef to the Dueling Arena. The arena was a venue for duels among the academy’s internal members, different from the one where William encountered an attack. It was designed for gold-level mages to practice and duel.
It was named after the academy’s Dean, “Flame of Judgment” Apollo Stephens, because he personally set up a highly advanced defensive magic circle there. Attacks below the legendary level almost had no chance of breaking through the defense.
Josef and Odysseus stood in the center of the Dueling Arena, waiting for the academy staff to activate the defensive magic circle. “You already have Bernie, an outstanding disciple. Let William be mine,” Odysseus tried to persuade, making one last effort.
“Shut up! Bernie is my only disciple. Don’t think I don’t know you could form a small kingdom’s team with your disciples,” Josef didn’t give him any pleasant looks.
“That’s different, none of them have talent,” Odysseus said realistically, indicating that innate talent is far more important than hard work for a mage.
At that moment, many students of the academy noticed the magical light lighting up the Dueling Arena. “The magic circle of the Dueling Arena is activated. Is a gold-level mage going to duel?”
“Let’s hurry; this doesn’t happen even once a year!”
Suddenly, students at the magic academy rushed towards the Dueling Arena.
