Chapter 101: The Battle for Disciple Heats Up!
Josef and Odysseus engaged in a heated exchange in the arena, paying no heed to the growing crowd gathering around the stands.
The Dueling Arena was equipped with a magical array arranged by a legendary mage, so there was no need to worry about harming the spectators nearby. Therefore, the academy had wisely built a circle of stands around the dueling arena for onlookers to gather and observe.
As the people entering the arena caught sight of the two figures standing within, they were all taken aback.
“One of them is Vice Dean Bloom!”
“And the other person, who is that? It’s incredible, their whole body is covered in magical equipment!”
“It seems to be Rune Master Dahr!”
“How did these two big shots end up quarreling, to the point of even activating the dueling arena?”
Seeing that the defensive magic array next to the arena had been fully activated, enveloping the entire area in a transparent, colorless magical shield, Josef didn’t hesitate any longer.
With a thought, the numerous fire elemental magic gems on his luxurious staff began to gleam with a dazzling red light. A massive, deep red fireball coalesced above Josef’s head under his control.
With a flick of his staff, the enormous fireball hurtled fiercely towards Odysseus.
Facing the attack of the massive fireball, Odysseus remained unfazed. He slammed his staff onto the ground, and a huge earthen wall swiftly extended from the ground, intercepting the fireball in midair.
Boom!
A deafening explosion reverberated as the shockwave spread outward, but it failed to ripple the protective shield formed by the magic array.
Odysseus remained relatively relaxed. Unlike Josef, who invested most of his energy into runewords and enchantment research, as an arcane mage, Odysseus had been dedicated to exploring the roots and essence of magical power for years. With years of experimentation and accumulation, Odysseus possessed a variety of unique arcane abilities that Josef couldn’t match.
The Seventh Circle Arcana: “Odysseus’s Luminous Bursting Fireball”!
Odysseus’s naming of his exclusive arcane abilities far surpassed those of William. It was a common practice among arcane mages to name their creations after themselves followed by the relevant spell.
Due to the vast number of exclusive arcane abilities created by arcane mages over their lifetimes, unless it was something very special or the arcane mage didn’t modify existing spell models but rather created entirely original arcana, they usually didn’t bother giving their arcana unique names.
Observing the iridescent fireball appearing above Odysseus, Josef faintly sensed the destructive force within it, his expression changing slightly.
‘This is much stronger than the fireball I just cast!’
‘So, this is an arcane mage. Indeed, with sufficient knowledge accumulation, they are synonymous with power and violence.’
Although Odysseus was formidable, Josef showed no signs of retreat.
If you ask him about the source of his confidence?
It was none other than the fact that he was wearing a set of equipment that drained the lifeblood and savings of a Rune Master. Even though Josef wasn’t adept at combat, he was confident enough to drag out the confrontation.
Unless a legendary powerhouse intervened, no one could take him down in a short time.
A massive translucent emerald shield appeared in front of Josef, completely blocking Odysseus’s luminous bursting fireball. But after fully intercepting this attack, the shield gradually shattered and disappeared.
If the observers paid attention, they would notice a ring adorned with an emerald magic gem on Josef’s right index finger, its magical brilliance also dimming, indicating that it would require some time to recover.
But each of Josef’s fingers wore a magic ring of the same caliber!
Not to mention the other magic equipment and items on Josef’s body.
Sorry, this is the power of wealth!

Odysseus was somewhat troubled. This was why he didn’t want to fight Josef. Most of the magical equipment on him were enchanted with various advanced defensive spells, making him essentially a walking fortress.
Just the magic embedded in this equipment alone would give Odysseus a hard time.
Although he thought this way, his actions didn’t stop. Various arcane energies converged around him like fireworks, launching towards Josef.
At the same time, Odysseus continued to speak, persuading:
“Why bother, Josef? You already have an excellent disciple. Just give this one to me. Continuing like this, it won’t be good for your reputation, will it?”
Josef’s mouth twisted with anger as he continued to cast defensive spells, cursing, “You shameless old codger, do you have no dignity left, coming here to steal my disciple!”
“What do you mean, your disciple? I met with William a while ago, and I even consulted him at that time.”
This was a lie!
In truth, Odysseus, assessing the situation, was quite clear. He suspected that Josef had also noticed something extraordinary about William, and perhaps even taken him in.
But this wouldn’t do. Odysseus had long lamented the lack of good disciples!
Every day, he was bombarded by his old friends flaunting their excellent disciples. Who could endure that?
Despite meticulously teaching all the disciples he took in, Odysseus hadn’t produced a single one with the potential to break through the Golden Tier.
This was often teased at gatherings by his old friends.
So, upon seeing William, Odysseus had a firm idea: this was his chance to turn the tide!
A Bronze-tier arcane mage needs to be taken under him.
Odysseus didn’t yet know that William had already broken through to the Silver Tier, but this didn’t shake his determination, even in a confrontation with Josef.
In fact, he was starting to regret it. Why hadn’t he acted sooner? He should have taken William as his disciple right there and then, instead of investigating his background at the academy.
But what’s done is done, there’s no point dwelling on it.
It’s just a turtle shell, and today, Odysseus was going to shatter that turtle shell!
“You’re talking nonsense!”
Josef erupted in anger, his magical aura shining even brighter.
He had asked William himself, and William hadn’t received any special guidance from a teacher, which meant he hadn’t been taken in by Odysseus.
Though their time spent together was brief, Josef hadn’t sensed any deception or pretense from William. Instead, William had openly discussed his “self-charging” rune and subsequent plans, which instilled a sense of trust and comfort in Josef.
Naturally, he believed William wouldn’t lie to him over such a trivial matter.
So what if William had other teachers already? Josef wouldn’t mind, as long as William didn’t disclose any secret teachings. After all, exchanging knowledge was the most important way for mages to progress.
‘But even so, Odysseus, you’ve gone too far with this deception. Do you think you can fool me?’
Various magical auras lit up around Josef, and he no longer focused solely on defense, but began actively attacking Odysseus.
At that moment, the battle in the arena grew even more intense.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in the academy…
A figure suddenly appeared on the pathway. He looked like a handsome young man in his twenties, with short dark brown hair and a black mage robe that seemed a bit dusty, as if he had just completed a long journey.
Despite his youthful appearance, there was a peculiar aura of agelessness about him.
He waved his hand, and instantly, the young man looked pristine again. Rubbing his chin, he muttered to himself, “What a hassle coming back. Why was that guy in such a rush!”
“Hmm? The dueling arena is activated. Let me see which bastard doesn’t cherish his life!”
