Chapter 169: Chapter 169 Chapter 169: Chapter 169 “That would be all, I believe?” Eva asked as she dropped the item into the hip in the shopping cart.
Gregory, who had been quietly pushing the shopping around slowly looked up at Eva at her when he heard her voice.
He didn’t know what to reply because he didn’t know if what she had picked was enough or not.
But they looked enough; the items were almost blocking his view; it had to be enough.
“I don’t know…but I think it should be enough.
Thank you, Ms.
E-” “Thank you for your patronage, kind sir, have a great day.
Please proceed to pay,” Eva nodded at him and gently walked off.
Her face was beaming with a satisfactory smile.
She had successfully executed her plan, and from now on, wherever she met him, she was going to give him the same treatment, distance, and professionalism.
Gregory watched her leave, and for some reason, he felt like he was purposely being ignored, he felt like he was purposely not being remembered, just like he had told her he didn’t recognize her.
He frowned as he thought deeply about why Eva acted too distanced from him.
But, he wasn’t even sure how he wanted Eva to treat him if not the way she did.
Again, it all boiled down to him not knowing how to communicate it and understand women, but he knew that men always said that women were mysterious, maybe, instead of feeling this confused, he could simply ask her what her problem was with him, that way, he would know why it was always awkward between them.
He looked down at the shopping cart and proceeded to push it toward the counter.
Eva was standing somewhere, watching Gregory as he lowered over almost everyone he walked past; he looked like a sore thumb amid people.
She was trying to watch his face when a strangely familiar face suddenly walked past Gregory.
Eva almost lost her footing, her heart racing as if it wanted to run out of her chest.
She could recall that face anywhere, even with her eyes closed because she was among the people who planned to kill Ariel with him.
“Hugo…” She whispered shakily.
Her hands started to shake, her limbs getting weak.
She gulped and slowly started to walk toward Gregory, it was time to swallow her pride and ask for his help.
She slowed her steps and saw Gregory prepare to carry the bags out to his car.
She couldn’t let him leave, if Hugo saw her, he’d definitely kill her because he would think she was going to expose what he did tired years ago.
She beside herself in fear.
She walked over to Gregory and silently stood behind him, using his tall body to hide herself from Hugo’s view.
“Hey, Mr.
Gregory,” She gently tugged his sleeve from behind.
Gregory frowned and looked behind him; he saw Eva looking like she was trying to hide from someone, and his frown deepened; who could she be hiding from?
“Ms.
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
Eva, anything the matter?” He asked, slowly looking around to check if anyone looked like a threat to her, but he couldn’t find anyone; everyone was busy minding their shopping.
“I…I can help you carry the bags to the car…it’s company service, it’s my job,” She smiled at him and helped him carry the remaining bags from the counter.
Gregory was confused, “Alright,” He replied.
Women were really mysterious.
Wasn’t it the same person who acted like she didn’t know him a few minutes ago?
She was now even calling him by his name and requesting to help him with his bags.
One thing he couldn’t do was say no to her.
He felt like he’d just make her more awkward.
He saw she was ready with the bag and started to move, knowing she’d follow behind, but…he didn’t know she’d literally follow him behind.
He took three steps and almost fell to the floor when Eva’s feet kept matching his heels.
He paused and looked behind him; Eva was standing right behind him, again, as if she was really trying to hide from someone.
“Ms.
Eva-” “I’m sorry, I was looking somewhere else; keep walking; I’ll keep my distance,” She apologized and took a step back, giving him a forced smile.
Eva just wanted to leave the damn mall without being seen by Hugo, her life was practically at stake here.
Gregory was convinced at this point that Eva was hiding from someone, but he wasn’t going to push her to speak, rather, he’d give her that security she needed.
“Let’s go,” He said and resumed walking, this time, slower, making sure he Saturday in front of her at all times.
He reached the exit and let her leave first, then he directed her to his car.
“Right here, please,” He said as he walked behind the car to drop the bags.
He stood behind the car, waiting for her to bring her bags over.
Eva quickly hurried over and dropped her bags inside the boot.
However, she was about to leave when she saw Hugo leaving the mall with a bag in his hand, his eyes suddenly looked to her side as if he was searching for something.
Eva gasped and suddenly stepped back, forgetting that someone was behind her.
“Oh,” She gasped as she fell right into Gregory’s hand.
Gregory was frozen when he felt Eva’s little body fall into his arms, catching her regardless.
“Ms.
Eva, are you sure you’re alright?” He asked, looking down at her.
Eva’s heart sounded like crazy, and her feet and palms became cold and sweaty…Hugo was coming their way.
She ignored what Gregory was saying and started to think of ways to hide her face from Hugo as he walked past them.
An idea suddenly popped into her mind, it wasn’t the best, but it would save her life.
She suddenly turned in Gregory’s arms and tipped her toes to wrap her arms around his neck.
Gregory was flustered; he stared down at her face and eyes, feeling his heart thud from how close they suddenly were.
“What-” “Shh, just look at me like you love me, pretend to be my boyfriend, just for a second, please?” Eva desperately asked.
She could hear the stumping of Hugo’s big boots getting closer to them.
Gregory was no fool; the moment Hugo walked out of the shopping mall, he could see how tense Eva became.
He knew that Huvo was the man Eva was hiding from.
Maybe her ex?
Her request to pretend to be her boyfriend was to spite that man, and for some reason, he wanted to help her out.
“Mr.
Gregory, you’re not listening to – Mm!” Eva’s heart stopped beating for two seconds before it suddenly started to thunder in her ribcage; she might as well die from a heart attack before Hugo even got to her.
Gregory had kissed her!
In broad daylight, in the middle of the mall!
One thing, though, she was repulsed by it; she surprisingly found herself kissing him back and wasn’t even aware when Hugo walked past them.
His kiss was so gentle, a barely there kiss that made her question if she was really getting kissed even though she was kissing him back.
Eva suddenly felt Gregory withdraw his lips from hers, his eyes looking past her to look for someone behind her.
She was disappointed, the man couldn’t even at least give her a smile after kissing her without a warning.
“Who’s he?” He finally brought his eyes back to Eva.
Once again, he saw the disappointment in his eyes; confusion was threatening to swallow him whole.
Why was she disappointed?
Did he not act good enough for her?
Did he miss something?
“Who are you talking about?” Eva asked and stepped away from his hold.
Gregory sighed, “The man entering the white van,” He pointed to the car across them.
Eva bit her lips; she knew that car was the same one Hugo had brought her to the abandoned warehouse three years ago.
Hugo saw her reluctance to speak, :Are you disappointed?
Did I not kiss you good enough?” He asked seriously.
Eva widened her eyes in shock, “You don’t ask people that, Mr.
Gregory,” She blurted out, looking everywhere but at him.
“Oh, okay, then I’ll be sorry; I was just trying to understand what is going on…I seem not to understand though,” He said, scratching the side of his neck.
“It’s okay, I’ll go back to work,” She said and turned away from him.
“Hold on,” He caught her hand and drew her back, making sure he didn’t draw her too close.
“What is it, Mr.
Gregory?” She asked.
“I know how you don’t want to speak about him, but I can feel he threatens your safety…do you mind riding with me…you can tell me about him in the car…” He slowly suggested.
Eva frowned, “Ride with you?
To where?” “To follow him, know where he lives, it’ll be easier to catch him that way, don’t you think?” He surprisingly smirked at her.
Eva didn’t realize she was smiling.
She would so love for Hugo to be caught and punished, and it wouldn’t hurt to tell Gregory about what happened in the past; she was protecting Ariel, too.
“You don’t mind?” She questioned with a raised brow.
“I might be dumb with matters that concern you, Ms.
Eva.
But I’m not a dumb person; I know that guy is no good…so, no, I don’t mind.” He replied, noticing the shock that masked her face.
