Jess was mute, she’d not contributed to the conversation since they started, but suddenly, she felt like it was time for her to speak.

“Ken, where were you last night, you wouldn’t believe what happened.

Could you believe that Moon tried to set me up with some guy?

But thanks to Jess, I was saved,” Ariel informed innocently.

Jess immediately looked at Ken and saw how stumped he was; he didn’t know how to reply, and his eyes instantly sought hers, silently asking her how to reply.

He was glad that Jess had the sense to be quiet about it; he was never going to let Ariel find out about it; from now on, he would try to slowly win her love, no matter how long it took, he’d do it.

“I just hope Aiden sees her soon for who she is, I just feel as if she’s about to do something way more evil than the last time,” Ariel sighed.

They were currently under a tree, the lights bouncing around them.

For the first time, the three of them went quiet, lost in their thoughts, Ariel thought they were all thinking about how evil Moon was and how they would stop and expose her, but she never knew that the two were having a different yet similar thoughts; they were thinking about how they would keep their secrets hidden forever, they both felt guilty as they stared at her, Ken felt it more.

He was disappointed in himself for ever agreeing to do that.

“Um, it’s getting quite dark; maybe we should all go home,” Jess suggested, she couldn’t wait to escape from Ken.

I guess so,” She turned and looked at Ken, “You came with your car right?” She asked with a smile.

Ken stared at Ariel’s face, his chest constricting with guilt; somewhere within him, he knew that there was a possibility that Ariel would never love him the way he loved her; why hadn’t he met her first?

“Yes, Ariel, I’ll take you home,” He smiled at her.

Jess felt her heart shatter as she watched the interaction between Ariel and Ken.

Why couldn’t Ken just speak to her the way he did to Ariel?

She should have left already, “Goodnight, guys, I’ll find my way,” Jess waved at Ariel and was about to leave.

“Hey,” Ariel held her hand and frowned at her, “What do you mean you’ll find your way?

Don’t be silly, come on, Ken will drop you off after me; my house is closer,” Ariel dragged Jess with her and they walked out of the park.

She was the kind of person who believed in expressing his feelings, she didn’t know how to not express it.

But she couldn’t do it with Ken; he had blatantly stated that he wasn’t interested in her, and staying alone with him was going to be very nerve-wracking.

Ariel had just pushed her into the raging water, and she didn’t have a life jacket on, she wasn’t about to survive it.

“You sit in the front, he’d feel like we abandoned him if we both sat at the back,” Ariel reached Ken’s car and pulled open the front door, smiling at Jess.

Jess was sure she was about to faint if she so much as took another step.

She paused and forced a smile on her face, sweats were breaking out of her forehead as he stared at Ariel.

“Um, I think I’d just-” “Get in the car,” Ken’s voice suddenly sounded beside her.

Jess jolted when she felt Ken’s hand on her lower back and his deep voice beside her made her forget how to breathe for a second.

“A-alright,” She quickly moved out of Ken’s hold and entered the car.

Ariel was still smiling as she pushed the door shut.

She went behind and entered behind Jess, proud of helping her friend to get in the car.

Ken took a deep breath before he walked over to the other side and entered the car, he had to get his nerves in check.

He didn’t understand why he was suddenly getting jittery because of Jess, he had never felt that way before.

“Are your seatbelts on?” He questioned as he started the car.

“Yep, Jess, is yours strapped?” Ariel asked.

Jess immediately nodded, seeing the way Ken was looking at her as if he wanted to lean over and fix it for her.

“Yes, yes, it’s fixed,” She quickly replied.

“Okay,” Ken said and drove off the car.

“Jess, how about we come back here tomorrow, we can bring Jewel; and, Ken, you can come too,” “No,” “No,” Both Jess and Ken replied at the same time.

For a few seconds, there was an awkward silence in the car; Ken glanced at Jess, who had her face lowered to her lap while Ariel looked from one person to the other.

“Wow, I never knew both of you were such in sync with each other,” Ariel giggled.

“No, no, we’re not, it’s just a coincidence,” Jess replied.

“Well, it’s fine, I guess I’ll just have to find something else to do after work,” Ariel sighed and slowly leaned into the chair.

The remaining ride was quiet; the two people in front were feeling suffocated by each other’s presence.

The ride seemed longer than usual but finally, Ken rolled his car to a stop in front of Aiden’s gate.

“Don’t worry, guys, I can go in myself,” Ariel said as she saw that they wanted to get down from the car to walk her in.

“Take care, Ariel,” Ken smiled at her.

“Goodnight,” Jess waved at her.

“Drive safe, guys,” Ariel said and walked into the gate.

The moment Ariel went into the gate, Ken and Jess’ smile dropped, and the atmosphere inside the car turned chilly immediately.

Jess felt awkward, extremely awkward.

Ken remained silent and drove off the car, heading toward Jess’ house.

“You can actually drop me off somewhere, I can find my way,” Jess quietly said.

Ken marched the brake, startling Jess.

“Ken!” Jess gasped as she almost hit her head on the dashboard but she managed to halt herself with her hands.

Ken slowly turned his face to her, his face marked with a frown.

“Why did you suddenly brake that way?” Jess asked, breathing rapidly.

“What do you take me for?” Ken asked quietly.

Jess furrowed her brows, “What do you mean?” She asked.

Ken scoffed.

“What do you take me for, Jessica?” Ken asked again; his voice was more deeper this time.

Jess sighed, “Well, I figured, since you hate me now, I have to keep my distance from you.” Silence reigned in the car.

“You think I hate you?” Ken questioned in a low voice.

“Why would you think that?” He questioned again.

Jess shook her head and tried opening the car door to let herself out, but Ken suddenly drew her back followed by the sound of the door locking.

Jess felt his hand on her arm and froze; she refused to turn around and look at him, she knew she’d feel more hurt if she looked into his judging eyes.

“Look at me, Jessica,” Ken said in a gentle tone.

In as much as Jess did him wrong, he was never one to treat a woman harshly; it was better they got what happened between them out of the way than be awkward around each other like they were.

Jess sighed and slowly turned her face to him, but she kept her eyes lowered; she couldn’t still look at him; she was haunted by the disguised look she saw in his eyes the previous night, it stung her heart.

“I don’t hate you, Jess; I’m just disappointed…why did you do it?” He asked softly.

Jess scoffed, “Disappointed?” She narrowed her eyes at him and questioned, “Have you stopped to think how everyone would have been disappointed in you if I had let Ariel walk into that room?!

You would have raped her, Ken!

Raped her!” Jess’ voice cracked.

Her voice was filled with such an unspoken pain as she remembered what Ken did to her body that night.

Ken was surprised at Jess’ outburst, He felt like there was something she was hiding from him, and for some reason, he wanted to find out what was breaking her, her words almost seemed like she sacrificed herself for Ariel, but mostly for his sake, instead of him being hated by everyone, she chose to lose her dignity for his sake.

Why did you have to risk yourself that way?” Ken drew her closer, peering into her eyes.

Jess smiled sadly; he was still talking about the woman he loved, there was never going to be her in his heart.

She picked up her courage and faced him, there was nothing to lose anymore, so before she completely cut all ties with him, she wanted to get something off her chest for the first and last time.

“I did it for my friend, Ariel, to save her mental health.

And…” She paused and moved her face closer to Ken’s, her heart pounding ridiculously.

Ken was frozen in place, he couldn’t believe what he’d just heard.
