Chapter 111: Getting back into uniform Chapter 111: Getting back into uniform The rest of the night went by without any problems.
The Captain didn’t stop by, and Kellen spent his night reading and going over the plan for tomorrow.
He made sure he cleaned up properly, his outfit was perfect for tomorrow, and that he had a large, calorie dense meal for dinner. He had a hard time sleeping, so before his alarm went off for the morning, he decided to head down to the gym early.
He’d already missed out on what he would consider a proper work out because of yesterday, so he could go in a little bit early.
He would need to make sure his body was warmed up and ready for the rest of the day. He had a towel around his neck when he scanned himself into the gym, only to have Brent turn around as he was putting some plates onto a weight bench with no one else in the gym.
They blinked at each other, before Kellen shook his head with a sigh, and quietly the two worked out together. Brent had a dark storm cloud around him, and since Kellen knew he wasn’t much of a talker when it came to himself, Kellen didn’t ask.
He did hope that helping him push himself, harder and harder, would help him work out whatever was bothering him.
He knew Brent was a professional, but at the same time, he wanted him to be in a good mood today.
It was a big day, and he wanted them both to be proud and in a good mood at the end of it. Brent was only wearing a t-shirt, showing off his actual prosthetic arm instead of just showing off the hand joints, so as more early rising Espers came into the gym, the more pointed stares Brent received.
Kellen couldn’t help that the stupid words that Hill had said yesterday kept floating in his head.
Which meant he glared at the Espers whenever Brent had his back turned. Finally, when the time for when they would normally leave the gym arrived, the two of them finished up, headed for the showers, and then headed for the elevator before separating and going for their own apartments.
They had planned that when they were both ready, they would meet again in front of the gym.
The reason being, that they weren’t wearing the classic Guild Guide uniforms, and instead, were going to wear their Field Guide uniforms.
Unlike normal Guide uniforms, which had variety depending on which organisation you worked for, Field Guide uniforms were universal.
And all black.
They had to wear black combat boots, and all black cargo pants with plenty of pockets.
All pockets were utilized, and either held emergency rations, weapons, potions, or medicine.
They always wore a black tank top underneath their top for an extra layer of protection, before they would pull on their regular top.
It was a tight fitting armoured shirt.
It wasn’t solid black, and instead was slightly reflective like snake skin.
This was due to the fabric, or skin that the shirt was made out of. The look was finished off with several leather straps across their body, meant to hold weapons, potions and more rations.
Then, depending on the environment, they’d either have a long jacket with several pockets that also acted as armour, or shorted leather jacket with pockets that also acted as armour, and a backpack with other supplies.
Obviously, you could tell which variation Kellen preferred, and which one Brent preferred. All in all, it was a fairly tight outfit, and you could always tell who was a Field Guide on the front lines.
They looked like the fucking grim reapers compared to the fluffy, bright Guide uniforms of other Guilds.
Especially the Peach Guild. Kellen, who hadn’t worn this outfit for several months, checked himself in the bathroom mirror to make sure there wasn’t a strand out of place.
Thankfully, even though the uniform was tight, it was surprisingly stretchy, so even with Kellen’s growth, it still fit him.
That being said, the leather straps were a little tight.
He’d probably have to get some more custom ordered in.
It was slightly surprising to him, since this was his largest set of straps yet. He stepped back, looking himself over, and it felt very nostalgic.
He’d told himself he would never wear this uniform again, and yet, here he was, paired up, in the Saturn Guild, wearing his old uniform.

If he was a sentimental man, he felt that he would have cried. Instead, he switched out his house slippers for his combat boots, and headed downstairs, checking over his apartment one last time before he pulled on his leather coat, and headed down to meet up with Brent in front of the gym.
Brent was already there, since it hadn’t been as long since he’d worn his uniform.
Upon seeing Kellen, he whistled, but Kellen found himself just as impressed.
Brent had gelled his hair back, pulling his hair out of his face.
It showed the scar more clearly, and took away the softening that Brent’s bright hair did.
He looked mean.
It made Kellen grin.
The two high fived before heading for the Field department to gather up their things for the day.
The first class was going to be at around 10:30, so the two of them had about 3 hours to get ready.
Thankfully, Kellen had gotten most of it ready while Brent was helping out upstairs. When the two of them entered into the Field department, they were surprised to find that the scientists were already there.
Especially Maeve, who had been gone to the front lines until now.
She turned, ready to greet them warmly, before her eyes widened as she stared at them in shock. “Is that the Field Guide uniform?” She asked, and Kellen nodded as he headed for his office door. “It is.
We thought it would be nice to show up and show off a little.” Kellen told her, before glancing at her quickly.
“When did you get back?” He asked, and she chuckled, glancing between the two of them.
Brent was still quiet, still a little angry, and left the chatting to Kellen. “I just got back.
We were finally able to identify 3/4s of the body parts we found.
It’s…disturbing, and I don’t mind telling you since I’m sure Captain Thatcher is going to tell you anyways, but…the D.N.A.
had been mutated.
That was why we were having such a hard time identifying the bodies.
Only about four out of the five person scout party have been identified.
Your friend, the Field Guide, was not one of them.
But we are hopeful that the remaining parts will be him.” Kellen nodded, frowning. “So you were sent back because you weren’t needed anymore?” Kellen asked and Maeve chuckled. “Well, not at the front lines anymore.
I’m going to the D.E.C.
later to meet up with some of the other scientists to work together now that the scientist that we’ve come up with a better material to make the suits out of.
We’ve realised that the gate is slowly eating away at the hazard suits we have right now, and Captain Sakura suggested she might have a formula we could use, but the scientist is too shy to show themselves.
At this point, I’m ready to believe that Captain Sakura has two powers, since I’ve seen her use her wind powers, but she’s too good with poisons for me to ignore the rumours anymore.” Kellen chuckled. “I promise, I’ve met the scientist she’s probably talking about, and they are very shy.
It took me quite a while to even get them to trust me.
She doesn’t have two powers.
People like that don’t exist.” Maeve raised her eyebrow, leaning against the doorframe of Kellen’s office.
She watched as the two of them gathered up a huge stack of printed out booklets, a few folded tables, and the laptop bag she’d seen Kellen carry around this whole time.
She shook her head. “I had no idea you thought that way.
I thought you would have kept an open, scientific mind.” Kellen gave her a look over his shoulder. “Dr.
Lyons, the human body can barely handle A Class powers of either kind, let alone S or SS Class.
I do not want to think how messed up a person would be if they had two powers in their bodies, especially A Class or higher.” She chuckled at Kellen’s impassioned words, looking over the two Field Guides thoughtfully.
She hadn’t seen any while she had been on the front lines, which had been a disappointment to her at the time.
Now?
She was happy that she had returned to the office before heading out. “You two look very dashing.
I had always thought that the Captain uniform for the Guilds were the best uniforms, but I had no idea that Field Guides looked so slick in theirs.
No wonder the Captain fell in love at first sight.” She teased, and Kellen felt his face heat.
He knew that she had changed the subject on him, but he wasn’t upset.
Maeve laughed, stepping into the office to slap her hand on his shoulder with force.
“You’re so easy to tease, Kellen!
I hope your first day training goes well for you two.
I’m happy I was able to come back in time to wish you luck in person.
Do you want some help to carry everything over?” She asked, and Kellen glanced over at Brent.
He shook his head, smiling at the Esper, but Kellen could tell it was half hearted. “Nah sweetheart, we’ve got it.
Thanks for the offer though!” She nodded, staring at Brent for a second too long before she smiled and waved, leaving the building once more.
It was clear that the work out had helped, but Brent was still under the weather.
He didn’t take kindly to others asking about his feelings when he was like this, and Kellen didn’t want to poke the hornet’s nest unless it was absolutely necessary.
Now wasn’t the time.
Maybe if Kellen got him a good snack or something it would change his attitude.
CREATORS’ THOUGHTS CalyB Well, we can’t say Maeve is wrong.
Kellen was wearing his uniform, minus the jacket.
