- Chapter 133 - Chapter 133 Brent's second worst nightmare
Chapter 133: Brent’s second worst nightmare Chapter 133: Brent’s second worst nightmare Brent and Kellen were in a normal classroom today on one of the Guide floors.
The plan they had come up with was to rotate every other day in the gym, and on the rest day they would be going over vital information.
It made sense to give their brains a rest on days when their bodies couldn’t and vice versa.
But, they would see how well it would do in practice. When Kellen made his way to the classroom, he was already jogging lightly.
He’d had to take the stairs to get here since the elevators were too slow, and he was worried about Brent.
He was right to be worried.
The man was flustered, almost sputtering at the front of the room.
What didn’t help was the way the rest of the Guides looked at him.
Like he hung the moon and the stars.
Brent wasn’t good with that much admiration. Kellen had a feeling that even if it wasn’t on the second day, this was eventually going to happen.
Brent was supposed to act like a teacher’s aid.
Even if he led his own portion of the class, Kellen was still the main teacher.
Brent was supposed to be the pretty Guide who smiled and flexed his muscles when it was needed.
Leaving him alone in a room of Guides who he wasn’t allowed to seduce for moral reasons? It must have been hell. Kellen couldn’t help but chuckle to himself at the state of the room.
The documents they had printed out were scattered around the large desk at the front of the room, the projector was set up, but it was on the first slide, and Brent was sweating.
Oh well.
He wanted Brent, and he wasn’t going to regret it.
He just hoped that he at least wouldn’t look like a deer in the headlights. “Oh look!
It’s Guide Woods!
Since he’s here now, why don’t you ask him?” Immediately deflecting everything to Kellen, Brent sat down and tried to be out of sight, out of mind.
Kellen shook his head, but closed the door behind him and headed for the front of the room. “What was that that you were asking about?” Kellen asked with a smile, and found himself facing a room of stunned Guides.
It wasn’t as if they hadn’t seen him wearing this before, he’d literally worn it yesterday, but something felt different. Oh.
The press conference.
Kellen smirked. “Did you see the press conference?” He asked, and several nodded, including Bree.
Sighing, Kellen leaned against the desk, practically hiding Brent from view.
He wasn’t a monster in that sense, he’d help the guy out.
“Alright, then let’s forget the question that was asked of Guide Jameson for a second, what did you think of the press conference?” He asked the ground of regular Guides, and watched a few of them swallow.
He had thought that Bree would be the first one to speak up, but he was surprised when it was one of the other Guides, the girl of the pair who had joined the morning class, who spoke up. “Um, I thought it was…pretty cool.” She answered, her cheeks flaming.
Kellen blinked.
“The reporters were really insistent that you did something wrong.

N-Not that I’m saying that harming another is okay, and under any other circumstances I would have been pretty upset too, but…we were there.
I was…one of the Espers is also on my roster for weekly guiding.
It was pretty upsetting to find out that other Guides who were also supposed to be taking care of them weren’t.
I wanted to do something, but I didn’t know what I could do.
I was approached by the group that did this, but I chickened out at the last minute.
I couldn’t hurt others like that.
To find out that they had done it to this extent?
Any Guide who is worth their salt would, no, should be livid at what they’ve done.” Kellen was surprised by her impassioned speech, and so did many of the others.
A few Guides reached out and patted her on the shoulder in comfort and support. “I agree with most of what you said.
I was never approached by them, because they knew better.
I was never going to join them.
I take my work seriously, and it pisses me off that someone could get away with something like this.
Admittedly, it was terrifying to find out what you did, and to watch the video after class yesterday, but after being in your class, I understood.
There is a difference between Field Guides and the other Guides.
You literally risk your life every day to make sure everyone gets out safely.
Espers can’t always be focusing on what the next safe step is when using their powers to protect everyone.
The same should apply in the city as well.
I don’t know if I would have gone as far as you went, Guide Woods, but I support what you did.
And, it was cool to see you lecture a bunch of idiots who couldn’t know a Guide from an Esper.” One of the male Guides spoke up, a few seats away from the first girl. Granted, there were only about 6 male Guides split between the two classes, so it would be easy to identify them in the future.
That number might change with the influx of new members Casper was supposed to send their way, but Kellen didn’t believe so.
For some reason, Guides were more commonly women.
But Kellen liked that so far, two of the students had spoken up. “I don’t really agree with violence for violence’s sake, but I do support your decision.
It isn’t out of fear, either.
I just hate Guide Fields.
Or, I guess, Ms.
Fields.
She was always a fucking bitch, and tried to throw her parents money around like it was worth something here.
Captain Thatcher has made it clear, several times, we are all equal here.
It doesn’t matter your Class level, or your gender, or your class level in life.
Once in the Saturn Guild, we are supposed to be a team.
I’m pissed she shat on that.” This was the girl sitting next to Bree.
She had her face set into a snarl, and Kellen had a feeling she was going to be a nice breath of fresh air to the group, considering how the rest of them gasped.
Kellen laughed. “Well I can’t say anything about her as a person, but I can speak as someone who comes from money.
I, myself, came to the Guild with some preconceived notions that Lieutenant Casper had to lecture me on.
But, both the Captain and Lieutenant Casper made sure that I knew where I stood in the Guild.” A couple of the Guides looked concerned and Kellen laughed.
“Nothing negative.
Honestly, I felt quite supported.
Plus, in the seven years I was on the front lines, the only thing my parent’s money got me was faster delivery times on my letters, and that was it.
If money and fame hasn’t been turned into food or equipment, it’s useless on the front lines.
There isn’t really even a shop out there.” Kellen looked over at Brent to find him nodding. “Not really.
Unless you smoke or drink, there isn’t really a shop, and even then, most smart Field Guides include that in their contracts if they aren’t with a Guild.” Kellen smirked. “You will not have to worry about that.
The Guild has always been generous to us even before we were with the Guild full time.
If you have vices, don’t be afraid to inform the person in charge of your supplies.
They judge very little, and make sure you get what you need.
No one needs to be going through withdrawal unless something goes wrong in a gate.” Brent continued nodding to Kellen’s words. “Which, to soothe your worries, happens rarely.” News hadn’t broken to the main public nor the Guilds, what had actually happened in the gate yet.
Plus, it just wasn’t good practice to scare your new recruits too much on the first day.
You had to invest more into them to make them worry about the sunk cost value before you dropped some rather serious bombs on them. And not all Field Guides went into gates.
Some became researchers and helped in that way.
They weren’t common, but with the idea that the Captain had, they might soon be.
It felt like he wanted all of his Guides changed into Field Guides.
Kellen wasn’t opposed to it, but that was a lot of one on one training he was going to have to do in the future.
He’d had to train others to become trainers. Or, better yet, hire his former teachers on contracts to help out.
It would be good for the Field Guides to see different types.
Kellen was the first to admit that he made sure he and Brent were far more fit then what was usually required of Field Guides.
He had been strict on him and Brent because he wanted to be able to handle anything that came his way.
He knew that the Captain was of the same mind.
He didn’t know if that was because of his personal preferences, or if he wanted to give Kellen free reign of something. Honestly, it felt a little bit like a pet project, but he wasn’t going to think too hard about that.
If he worried about it being something for Kellen to do, he was pretty sure he was going to pop a blood vessel. “Yeah, but, how often do things go wrong?” One of the girls asked, and Kellen frowned.
He glanced at Brent, but he wasn’t looking at him.
This was on him.
Kellen sighed. “Well, I don’t want to lie to you and say that it never happens.
I will tell you that most times, you will be sent in with everything that could possibly get out of a bad situation if it arises.
Don’t panic, our job is to make sure that you know how to do everything, and what to do in certain situations.
But what happens when the unexpected happens? First, don’t panic.
If you panic, you could die.
Watch everything that is around you.
Try to get a read on the area around you.
What is familiar, and what is different?
Why is it different?
Why is it familiar?
Where are the Espers you came in with?
Are they safe?
Would being with them make you feel more safe, or not?
Sometimes, that is a judgment call you have to make because there are mind altering substances we can’t see that can get injected into the environment around us that can influence others.
There are times where our allies could become our enemies.” Kellen watched as their faces went white, and he shook his head. Pulling out his pointer, he pointed at the screen behind him.
“That.
Being.
Said.
Today, we are going to focus on the basics.
What is normally in your kit, on your body, and why you carry it.
What I told you rarely, rarely happens.
I’ve only been in that situation once in the seven years I was on the front lines.” That seemed to make some of them relieved, and Kellen chuckled.
At least they were easy to appease.
That was a relief.
He didn’t tell them that it was the second gate he’d gone into, and that the Esper had to be sedated once they came out.
They didn’t need to know that.
