Chapter 168: Some things do change Chapter 168: Some things do change When Kellen showed up to the gym about half an hour later then he normally would, slightly dazed, and met Brent’s gaze, he had a fucking look on his face.
He held it together through their first set, but when they took a brief water break, he let it loose. “So…no longer Kellen the celibate?’ He asked, and Kellen thanked a higher power that he wasn’t drinking water at the moment of his question.
Kellen took a moment to gather himself, shaking his head before he sighed, glancing at the damn sparkling green eyes on him, and smirked. “Hate to break it to you, but we haven’t had sex.” Brent’s eyes went wide, and at first, Kellen thought it was because he confirmed he was still a virgin. “Oh my god, you just called it sex.
You didn’t-I honestly didn’t expect this kind of development.” What the hell did that mean?
Why was he reacting this way?
“Brent, what the hell are you on about?” Kellen asked, and Brent grinned.
He leaned against the bar of the bench press they had been using and took a sip of the water bottle he had been using. “Kellen, you used to blush like a virgin and call it intimate skin relations or some shit like that.
You wouldn’t even call it sex unless really pressed about it.
For years I had to pussy foot around talking about it.
Blew my mind, since you were the picture perfect Guide on the outside, but so fucking innocent on the inside.” He gestured broadly.
“But anything else related to it, you had no problems discussing.
If I discussed eating a man out, not a problem.
You just always never said the word sex.” Kellen blinked, stunned he’d noticed something like that about Kellen that Kellen hadn’t realised himself. “Oh.
I had no idea.” He muttered, and Brent laughed.
His hand smacked Kellen’s shoulder before he clasped onto it and gave Kellen a shake. “Why the fuck would you?
I’m the horny pervert between the two of us, you clearly didn’t give a fuck about it.
Get it, give a fuck?” Kellen rolled his eyes as Brent laughed.
“It also didn’t impact anything.
I’m just surprised at this development.
I fully expected you to be like, ‘no, the Captain and I didn’t go the whole way’ or some shit.” Kellen felt his face flush as Brent attempted to fake his voice. “I wouldn’t say it like that.” Kellen protested and Brent laughed as Kellen shook off his hand. “Oh yeah?
How do you think you would have said it?” He teased and Kellen huffed. “The Captain and I…well, I don’t need to think about how I would have said it, I already did.” Kellen stated, realising he didn’t have to go along with him.
Brent grinned at him, before getting up from the bench press and headed for their next destination.
Kellen grabbed the towels they used to clean themselves up with from the bench press and followed him.
Towards the sparring arena. “Oh shoot, you didn’t fall for it.
Maybe rolling around in the hay with Captain Thatcher has made you more aware of my teasing.” He joked. “We didn’t-ugh, I just know talking to you about this is going to make me lose brain cells.” Kellen said, tossing the towels onto a post nearby to keep it off the floor.
Brent pouted. “Awe, come on Kellen.
You know that’s not my preferred method of loss of brain cells.
And I would never do that with you, now, since I don’t have a death wish, and I don’t poach.
Now come on, let’s go through the movements we want to teach those cute little Field Guides today.” He pulled off his shirt, tossing it to the side. Normally, Kellen would do the same thing, but given the sneaking suspicion that Rhys had left more marks on him than even Kellen knew, he was hesitant to do so.
Brent, like a shark sensing blood in the water, latched on.

“Why aren’t you taking your shirt off, Kellen?
You’re usually the first to go topless.” He was louder than normal, and Kellen knew damn well it was because others were starting to trickle into the gym now.
There was always the usual morning crowd, but Kellen swore he could hear Kill’s voice somewhere behind him, entering the gym. Caught in a trap of his own making, Kellen sighed, and with one movement, pulled his shirt off and tossed it behind him.
He knew his cheeks flushed as Brent whistled.
He pretended to fan his cheeks. “Can we focus, please?” Kellen asked, embarrassed, and Brent shook his head.
He started to circle Kellen, clearly amused, while Kellen wanted this embarrassment to end. “Holy shit Kellen.
I can see his fucking teeth marks in your skin.
Are you okay?” He asked, glee in his voice even if his words were concerned. “If you don’t make the first move Brent, I will.” Kellen warned, and he backed off, hands up, a goofy grin on his face. “My bad, my bad.
Forgot who I was talking to for a moment.” He settled down, and the two of them were just about to start their run-through when Kellen heard another whistle. “Hot damn boys!
Looking good!” Hill’s voice rang through the gym and Kellen closed his eyes for a moment before he turned and looked at her.
She had a shit eating grin on her face.
She wasn’t in her Esper uniform and instead was in a regular gym outfit, so clearly she was here to blow off some steam.
It looked like she needed to, since she didn’t have her normal youthful glow to her skin.
She seemed…tired, even if she was smiling. “Hey Hill.
How’s the mutation?” Brent asked, and she shrugged before joining them in the center of the arena. “Oh, you know, mutating.
But!
No one died, so we’re sitting pretty for now while the scientists are busy.
Captain Sergei is there as well as Captain Sakura, so we’ll know more information here in a couple of hours.” Kellen felt slightly out of the loop, but at the same time, he didn’t mind.
It was okay that he had taken some time for himself, and for Rhys.
It was needed, and he could always catch up later.
Brent let out a wistful sigh. “Ah, if only I could climb him like a pole.
That Captain Sergei is always so stoic.
I want to see him flushed while I-” Kellen reached over and covered his mouth with his hand while Hill giggled. “Kellen, let the man talk.
I want to hear what he wants to do to Captain Sergei.” Kellen shook his head. It is too early in the morning for those kinds of thoughts.” Kellen told her firmly, and Hill raised an eyebrow.
She crossed her arms and smirked, stared pointedly at Kellen’s neck. “Oh?
Says the one covered in hickies and literal bite marks?” Kellen wouldn’t have been able to prevent his face from exploding with colour if he had tried.
These were the two people he had wanted to have a slightly higher moral ground to, and here he was, exposed within the first fucking five minutes.
He coughed. “That and this are two different things.
I’ve never been fond of hearing people talk about others like that.
You know that, Hill.” She hummed, giving Kellen a thorough one over.
He grew more nervous by the second she remained quiet.
Brent took this moment to lick his hand and Kellen jerked his hand away from his mouth, disgusted.
Brent laughed at Kellen’s expression. “Well, that is true.
Even if someone becomes sexually active, that doesn’t really change their personality.
Unless they’re like me and Brent, and are little cu-” She stopped her own words as Kellen went to cover her mouth.
Maybe Kellen was feeling a little sensitive because of what Rhys had said and done earlier, but he wasn’t willing to put up with any of their shit right now.
Hill danced away from Kellen, laughing at his serious expression.
“What’s up with you today?
Usually you just passively leave us alone.” Kellen knew that two sharks were circling him, and the water was getting bloody.
“Or did the Captain say something?” Hitting the nail on the head, Kellen exhaled slowly, before glaring at the two of them. “I’m just not feeling like I’m in the mood for your usual banter, alright?
It’s early in the day, and I have a lot of things I need to do.
Like write up contracts, visit all of the Guiding Centers, teach classes, guide, work out, and make sure that the Guild doesn’t explode while everyone else handles what they’re supposed to do for the day too.” Both of them blinked, a little surprised at the tone Kellen had used.
It was basically an outburst, and honestly, Kellen was surprised by it too. He didn’t think he’d react like that to some light prodding and teasing.
But, given yesterday, and how crazy his emotions had been, he should give himself some leeway.
He sighed, running his hand over his face.
“Sorry, that wasn’t very nice.
I don’t want you two to think that you can’t be yourselves, it’s just me.” Brent and Hill remained silent while Kellen took a second.
It was a moment later that Kellen was meeting Brent’s gaze, and he seemed quite thoughtful. “So yesterday wasn’t enough?” He asked, completely serious.
Flushing, Kellen covered his face again.
Fuck. Hill glanced between them, clearly interested in what was being said since she was out of the loop. “Brent, the gym is full of Espers with big ears.
I don’t want to have this conversation here.” Kellen protested and Brent chuckled. “That alone is the answer.
Well, it sounds like Captain Thatcher has his work cut out for him.
I won’t pry any longer, but you’re going to tell me all about that later.” Hill, upset at being left out, pouted.
