(BL) Hunting The Field Guide - Chapter 169
Chapter 169: An Ambush Chapter 169: An Ambush Hill rested against Brent’s shoulder, still pouting.
“I better be included in that conversation, or so help me, I’ll interrupt you and Captain Thatcher again.” She threatened.
Brent turned his gaze towards the determined Hill, while Kellen felt his face flush. “Again?
When have you interrupted us?” Kellen questioned, and she huffed. “You don’t honestly believe that the Captain would have left you alone after guiding yesterday, do you?” Kellen stared at her, and remembered what the Captain had been like yesterday.
He wasn’t himself, that was sure.
He was jumpy, and irritated.
How he had brought up how he was supposed to have the whole evening off and had been super angry with her.
What on earth had he been planning if that was the case?
“Well, honestly, if he hadn’t rejected my guiding, you would have interrupted us then, so I guess I can give you that.” Kellen told her, which came as a shock to both of them. “Wait, the Captain rejected your guiding yesterday?
Why the fuck wasn’t that brought up sooner?” Brent’s voice was loud, and Kellen gave him a sharp look. “Watch your volume, Brent.
I didn’t bring it up because to me it wasn’t a big deal at the time.” That was a bold faced lie.
Kellen had already told Taylor that it felt like he had outright rejected him, personally, but after the two of them had talked throughout the night, Kellen knew that wasn’t the case.
Rhys had been full of emotions, and was probably too stressed to accept guidance of any kind.
“It wasn’t anything unusual.
Sometimes when emotions are high, Espers reject guiding.
We all know this.” Kellen said, feeling mature about his answer.
The two stared at him in stunned silence. “Yeah, but you’re his pair, Kellen.
I just can’t even fathom him doing that to you.
It hurts like a bitch when it happens.
Did you tell him that?” Hill’s eyes widened at Brent’s words, and Kellen wondered how the education of Espers even happened.
Did none of them pay attention in class if she was that surprised at what was considered basic knowledge?
Everyone should know that rejecting guiding hurts both parties.
Espers in the sense that their emotions became more volatile, more aggressive, and Guides with a recoil of sorts.
It usually was a sharp pain that radiated from the point of contact that turned into a numbing sensation.
Kellen looked away from Brent’s piercing green gaze. “It wasn’t that bad, especially since I noticed the rejection right away and that he was in no state to be guided.
Honestly, trying to guide was harder than the recoil.
I felt like I was drowning.” Brent seemed thoughtful about his comment, while Hill seemed horrified. “Drowning?” Hill asked, and Kellen nodded. “Yes, Hill.
Have you never felt that before?” Hill stared at him, shocked. “Not on dry land, Kellen!” Hill exclaimed, but Brent interrupted her theatrics. “Huh.
Maybe because you two have such a high compatibility the recoil wasn’t as bad.
Did you bring that part up to Taylor?

About the recoil?” He asked and Kellen shook his head.
Glancing away from Brent again, Kellen scratched the back of his neck, unintentionally grazing the marks that the Captain left and he flinched. “Uh, no.
We had other things to talk about.” Kellen muttered, before he cleared his throat.
“Anyway, we’ve had enough of a break.
We should really run through our program now.” Kellen kept his tone firm, but he had dissuaded either of them.
Both had caught the scent of something juicy, and they wanted a little bite.
Brent had a devious grin on his face as he glanced over at Hill, who had a matching grin.
“Oh, you want to go through the plan?
By pure chance, I happened to bring a copy with me to the gym today.” He pulled two perfectly folded pieces of paper out of his pocket, while Hill glanced around.
She pointed to some Espers, and Brent chuckled.
“Oh look, some free Espers who are more than happy to run through a program at 30% of their power to see if a B Class Guide could manage it easily or with great difficulty.
How kind of them.” Stunned, Kellen watched as the two Espers turned and headed for the sparring arena.
One of them was the redheaded Esper from the Guide incident.
She gave Kellen a wave as she came over, taking the piece of paper Brent offered.
The other Esper was a similarly famous A Class Esper who was known for city repairs.
He grinned, taking the other offered sheet from Brent. “Ah, I love working on controlling my power levels.
How kind and thoughtful of you to offer me this job, Guide Jameson.” His delivery was very robotic and he gave Brent a wink.
“Yeah, I too like to help out the Field Guides on occasion.
I am such a good and strong and responsible Esper.” The redhead delivered just as robotically and a feeling washed over Kellen. “Wait a goddamn second.
Did you two plan this?
Together?” Kellen demanded from the both of them and they snickered.
Brent wrapped his arm around Hill’s shoulders. “Kellen, we would never be so devious.
Especially if, out of nowhere, you randomly showed up in the middle of a meeting, looking all meek and shy.
You even ignored every warning sign I threw in your direction and nose dived into asking the man who was literally intimidating every other Esper in the room into compliance on a date.
Oh, and you called him by his first name and got him to apologise to me.
You also just informed me that he had rejected guiding prior to this, so he was extra on edge.
But no, of course not, Brent and I would never work together.” Hill said, her voice dripping with sarcasm and insincerity.
Brent patted Hill’s shoulder, nodding along to her words. “We never would.
Especially after watching the hot, steamy sexual tension between you and the Captain all day at the photo shoot.
Hell, when you kissed him?
Fuck, I almost fell for you all over again.” Brent offered.
“When he ran out of the studio with you in his arms?
Prince Charming behaviour if I’ve ever seen it.” He fanned himself with his free hand, while the two Espers beside them opened the papers Brent had handed to them, chuckling.
Kellen’s mouth was open in shock, before he felt his face heat and he pressed his lips into a firm line. “Honestly, we were worried that it might not even work.
You might not have shown up to the gym this morning.” Hill wiggled her eyebrows at Kellen suggestively and Kellen’s lips firmed further.
He was never going to admit to how close that actually came to happening. “You both know I like to stick to patterns once I’ve created them.” Kellen’s tone was stiff, and Brent’s smile was soft as he looked over his partner in crime. “Of course I know that.
That’s why I won the bet and got to be the one to greet you when you arrived at the gym.
Plus, you would be less suspicious of an ambush if I was there instead of Hill.
So?
Have we put your mind at ease enough that you’ll come away with us to discuss yesterday?
And tell us all the hot, juicy, details?” Brent was begging.
In fact, when he looked between the two of them, they had the exact same expression on their faces. Tense, Kellen closed his eyes, inhaled, counted to five, then exhaled.
He should never have brought Brent here, even if he knew he needed his support.
Kellen’s mental health wasn’t going to be able to handle the two of them ganging up on him like this.
He’d hurt himself by letting them get acquainted. Kellen opened his eyes, glaring at the two of them before spinning, and picking up his shirt and pulling it back on.
His movements were stiff, since he was filled with anger and being so thoroughly caught. “Fine, but I need a real report on the lesson plan.” Kellen said, and the two Espers saluted him, both smiling. “No worries there, Guide Woods!
This is a very thorough outline, so it’ll be easy to follow.” The redheaded Esper spoke up while the two misbehaviours who planned the whole thing high fived.
Brent pulled his own shirt on, a silly grin on his face.
Hill rushed towards Kellen, grabbing his arm in a vice-like grip and smiled at him now that he had agreed. “Oh, I am just so excited to hear all about the juicy details I was curious about!
Captain Thatcher wouldn’t ever tell me anything about him and the people he was involved with, well, unless it came to you and where you were on the front lines.
But now I get to hear it from the horse’s mouth!
I’m so excited!” Hill’s excitement wasn’t lost on Kellen, especially since it was genuine.
He sighed.
If he had known that this was what they had planned for him, he would have stayed in bed with Rhys.
