Chapter 222: Checking in on his girls Chapter 222: Checking in on his girls Given the chaos of yesterday, Kellen wasn’t sure what to expect when they went down to the Medical Bay.
He knew it was usually a quiet place, but he wasn’t sure if it would be maintained into today. He should have known better.
Taylor wasn’t the kind of person who would let something like an assassination attempt ruin her peace and quiet. The hallways remained quiet.
It wasn’t in an eerie way, but in the way that this felt like a sacred place.
Human voices shouldn’t be too loud in a place like this. Rhys seemed to know where he was going, and Kellen didn’t question it.
He assumed it had something to do with either power levels, or Rhys remembered what room they had been in yesterday.
To Kellen, the doors all looked the same, and he had been quite tired the day before.
He was lucky he knew what doors they used for guiding since they all looked the same. Kellen knocked gently on the door when Rhys stopped in front of it, and it took a moment before a tired, weary-looking version of his Mom opened the door.
A hospital bed and been wheeled into the room, and it was clear that it was untouched.
Kellen frowned at her, and she gave a weak smile in return. “Ah.
You’re back so soon.
It must be morning then.” She said and Kellen wanted to shake her.
He didn’t and instead shoved the items he had grabbed into her arms. “Eat.
We’re going to make sure that you do.
If you don’t, I’ll tell Dad.” He threatened, and she glanced at that large window before turning back to him with a small smile. “Alright.
Don’t rat me out.
I’ll never hear the end of it.” Kellen forced a smile before really taking a good look at her.
He’d been so focused on everything else yesterday to really check on her. She was not in a good condition.
Her skin was pale, her eyes swollen and bloodshot.
It was clear she hadn’t rested.
And the clothes she was wearing were the same from yesterday, and also covered in blood.
It wasn’t good, and Kellen was supremely worried. “Did you send anyone to pick you up some fresh clothes?
Gwen or someone else?” He asked, and she shook her head.
She turned and placed the food and tea down on the small table in between the two chairs and smiled at her son. “No.
I didn’t want to be a bother.” She laughed at the instant way Kellen’s lips turned down in a frown.
“But I would be one, Kellen.
The Guild is on high alert, I’m on high alert.
I don’t feel comfortable sending anyone into my home right now.” Kellen understood.
She probably wasn’t sure if they had tampered with it. Frowning deeper, Kellen crossed his arms. “We could send Gwen with a few other Espers that we trust.
That way, Gwen is safe, the house gets a one over and you are out of those disgusting clothes.
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
Plus, if we send Gwen, we can also pick up some clothes for Dad when he wakes up.” Kellen was not above using his Dad’s name to get her do stuff.
The way she looked at him told him that she knew it too, but she couldn’t help herself. “Alright.
You drive a hard bargain.
But is Gwen even up to it?” She asked, and Kellen sighed.
He had no idea.
Gwen was behaving strangely, and for her to get into a fight was also strange.
He’d have to confront her about it, and in a way that she wasn’t going to be able to run away. “Fuck.
Guess I’m going to have to use that.” He muttered quietly, and Rhys and his Mom looked at him strangely. “That?” They both asked, and Kellen nodded while the two shared a look. “Yes.
The one thing an Esper can’t say no to.
I don’t like using it, but I will if it means that we can air out this awkwardness.
She’s been avoiding me for a few days now.” Kellen admitted, and his Mom seemed impressed. “How?” Kellen blinked, before narrowing his eyes at his Mom. “She can turn invisible, Mom.” His Mom blinked, before she burst into laughter. “Right!
You can’t sense power fluctuations.
I forgot.” She said, and Kellen could tell she was on a thinner line than yesterday.
Frowning further, he tapped Rhys’ shoulder.
Rhys clearly didn’t want to, but he gently put Kellen down on his own feet and watched as Kellen limped once before he yanked his Mom into a hug, not giving her a choice. Kellen’s Mom was surprised by the strength of his hold, but didn’t fight him.
Kellen felt her relax in his arms, her shoulders dropping, and she let out a soft exhale.
Kellen held her for as long as she would allow, not pulling away until she had had enough. Her eyes were softer, a little less bloodshot after he’d hugged her.
Kellen stepped back and Rhys caught him, making sure that the other man didn’t fall. “It’s an interesting phenomenon that Kellen is able to soothe you.” Rhys stated, and Kellen’s mom nodded. “I agree.
There aren’t a lot of chances for something like this to be tested.
Most parents of other awakened don’t get themselves into these kinds of situations, or if they do, neither of them make it out alive.” Kellen did not like how casually she said that, and she could tell.
“Don’t make that face.
It’s the truth, isn’t it?
If you hadn’t acted as quickly as you had, things could have been very different.” “Don’t be mad at your Mom.
Instead, you should focus on yourself.
I’ve let Green know we’re here, and you need your wound checked.” Rhys’ tone left no room for negotiation, and Kellen sighed.
He stared at his Mom, giving her a one over before he glanced at the small table in the room. “If you haven’t eaten half of the food by the time I get back, I’m force feeding you.” He threatened, and watched as her eyes glowed purple for a brief second before she closed them, shaking her head.
When she opened her gaze again, the Esper was gone, and instead his Mom stared back at him. “You are such a cheeky child.
Telling what I can and can’t do.
Gosh, I don’t know how Rhys handles it.” Kellen’s cheeks flushed at the teasing, and Rhys chuckled behind him. “Because it’s worth it in the end.
Now come on.
I’m sure Green is also anxious to see you.” Kellen nodded, letting the other man pick him up again before waving at his Mom.
He was worried about her, but he had so many things to do that he felt bad he couldn’t focus on her. Which only left him wondering, why the hell wasn’t Gwen with her?
Was it because she was avoiding him?
If that was the case, he was going to tear her a new one for that thought alone.
Whatever beef the two of them were having, it shouldn’t matter in a situation like this. Rhys’ legs covered great ground and before long the two of them were outside Taylor’s office.
Kellen knocked, and the door was flung open. Taylor honestly didn’t look much better than his Mom.
Her eyes were also bloodshot, her face pale and slightly gaunt, and her hair had lost its sheen.
She at least was wearing a fresh set of clothes, and did look like she’d gotten a few, restless hours of sleep, but everything else? Just like his Mom.
“Kellen, and Captain Thatcher!
Come in, come in!” She stepped back, allowing them into her office.
Her eyes were already green when Kellen glanced up at her.
“Captain Thatcher, put Kellen down.
Kellen, strip your pants off for me.” Rhys furrowed his brows, but did as was asked of him, and so did Kellen. He stood with his pants around his ankles since Taylor didn’t give him time to take them off completely before she began prodding at the wound.
Her gaze was focused, intent, and it slightly hurt when she poked the wound. “How is he looking?” Rhys asked, worried, and Taylor hummed.
She didn’t say anything for a few, long moments before she glanced up at the two of them. “Everything is on the right track, but I’m sorry.
I won’t be able to heal this wound completely.
With the lack of Guides in the Guild right now, I just don’t feel comfortable healing you completely right now.
I’m sorry Kellen.” Her gaze was extremely apologetic.
“I need to have some power in reserve in case something drastic happens again.
I’m usually not a big drain on Guides, but given what I had to heal, it would probably take me three guiding sessions alone to get all of my powers back.” Kellen nodded, completely understanding. Healers were invaluable, and she was right to be worried.
He was sure that the rest of the Guild was too.
Someone had tried to kill an influential Guide in the city.
Whoever it was, could attack again, and Taylor could be needed again. Kellen glanced back at the man behind him who was on his phone.
But his gaze was bright yellow.
Alert, aware, and a little bit crazy. “Rhys, can I guide Taylor?” He asked, and Taylor’s eyes went wide. “Kellen, no!
You’re still-” “I doubt I could stop you, but thank you for asking.” Rhys responded, and Kellen grinned before turning to his best friend. “See?
He already knows.
Now hold out your hand, you fool.
I can at least give you some more comfort for saving my Dad’s life.” CREATORS’ THOUGHTS CalyB Do you guys remember what ‘that’ is?
