(BL) Hunting The Field Guide - Chapter 226
Chapter 226: We’re family Chapter 226: We’re family Gwen cried so much she looked like a pufferfish, and Kellen wasn’t such a bad big brother that he’d let her go out in front of her friends like that. So, he messaged Taylor to ask if she could send some cream or something up for Gwen.
Also explaining that he was pretty sure that they had made up.
Gwen knew nothing of it, so when someone knocked on the door to the guiding room, she nearly jumped out of her skin. “D-Did we take someone else’s slot?” She asked, nervous, and Kellen chuckled.
She was wrapped around him like a monkey, refusing to let go.
It was quite cute, since she hadn’t been like this in years. “No, I booked off the time.
It must be the help that I asked for.” She gave him a strange look as Kellen chuckled.
“You can come in.” Kellen called, and the door opened tentatively.
In came one of the medical team Healers, and Kellen widened his eyes in surprise. “Esper Green sent me instead.
I hope that’s okay.” They said, and Kellen nodded, smiling.
Gwen looked at him suspiciously. “What did you ask of Taylor?” She demanded, and Kellen laughed. “Oh, just something to help with your eyes.” Kellen responded, and Gwen’s mouth firmed into a thin line. “Are you fucking kidding me?
You told Taylor that?” Gwen was pissed, but she wouldn’t release the hold she had on Kellen either.
It was very cute, and Kellen chuckled. “Awe, come on now.
I just thought she was going to send a cream or something.
I am very thankful that she sent someone with healing powers instead, aren’t you?
Now, are you going to thank them for taking time out of their busy, no doubt full schedule to heal you?” Kellen told her, and Gwen made a face. The healer was having a hard time trying to approach the two siblings.
It felt like they had stepped somewhere they shouldn’t have, especially when they saw the Woods siblings clearly in the middle of a moment.
The only reason they had dared knock was because Captain Thatcher was outside the door, and had encouraged them to do so. Gwen let out a heavy sigh, causing the Healer to jump, while Kellen smirked knowingly.
Kellen knew that his sister would never ignore if someone had come to help them, even if she hated it with every fiber of her being. Grumbling, she turned towards the Healer, a rather sour expression on her already puffy, swollen face.
She looked hilarious, and Kellen did his best to keep his laughter under control.
It would benefit no one if he laughed right now. “Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule.
I’m sorry you have to see me like this.” She mumbled, and the Healer smiled at Gwen. “It’s alright.
I don’t mind.
It’s nice to have to heal something simple every once in a while.
Plus, I get to go to the coffee shop after this.
It’s a nice escape.” Gwen chuckled at their response, and Kellen knew that the worst of her tears were over. She’d done quite a number on herself and Kellen was thankful that he had been there when she had.
It had been extremely comforting to have the Captain there for him when he had cried, and he wasn’t sure if he’d thanked the Captain for that.
And if he had, it wasn’t enough. What could he do for the Captain that would prove that he appreciated what he’d done for him?
Food?
Cookies?
A thoughtful gift?

Kellen didn’t consider himself good at giving gifts.
He just normally bought things that he thought the other person would like, or that they were out of.
Would something like that work?
“There.
All done.
Anything else that I can look at?” The Healer asked after finishing up Gwen’s eyes.
It was amazing how quickly they worked, and how good Gwen looked after.
Her face had gone down, her eyes weren’t as puffy.
Her eyes were still a little bloodshot, but she looked much better. She sniffed. “I-I’m fine.
Kellen?” She asked, and Kellen shook his head. “No.
I’m fine.
I have my cane for now, and I don’t plan to go running into a gate any time soon.” He joked, and Gwen frowned, along with the Healer.
“Are you in any pain?
I know that Esper Green is looking after you, but I don’t mind.
I could at least ease some pain you’re having if you need me to.” Kellen glanced at Gwen’s face, which was glowing, practically begging him to ask for help.
He heaved a sigh. “I have a slight twinge in my thigh.
It’s nothing I can’t work through, but-” The Healer’s eyes turned green, and Kellen felt the pain ease. “Perfect.
I noticed a slightly inflamed spot, so I was hoping you were going to say something.
Alright, since I seem to not be needed anymore, I’m going to head out.
Thanks for the excuse to grab a coffee!” They waved, and thanked them, which Kellen thought was strange.
Gwen and Kellen should be the ones thanking them, not the other way around. Once the door was closed, and Gwen was still wrapped around him, Kellen voiced his thoughts. “That was…a little strange, wasn’t it?” He asked and she shrugged. “Aren’t all Healers a little strange?” She asked in return, and Kellen had to sit for a moment and think. Taylor was a little strange, but overall, was a regular person.
She had normal thoughts and feelings, even if she liked money, but Kellen considered her ‘normal’.
Other Healers he’d met? They’d been varied, and of different sort, but he never considered them…strange.
Not like that Healer. “Well, no, I don’t think so.” Kellen muttered, and Gwen turned thoughtful. “Well Kellen, I don’t necessarily take you to be the most normal human around.
Healers are always like that.
They all obsess over something and I think that’s how they get through all the stress they go through.
After all, some of them, like Taylor, can attach limbs.
They can basically do miracles, and that must do something to someone’s psyche.” Gwen made a good point, even if she made a dig at him.
And he hadn’t considered the obsession part of it. But if he thought back to the other Healer’s he’d met, he could remember that each of them had something that they were weirdly interested in.
Like flowers, plants, frogs, animals, rocks, things like that.
One had even been obsessed with sex.
Kellen just didn’t think it was a Healer thing, but he guessed that it was.
Taylor’s was obviously money, so hers was fairly predictable.
And Kellen remembered that she hadn’t been like that till after she awakened. “I guess…I just never noticed until now.
I just thought it was normal for Espers.” Gwen’s laughter filled his ears, and he smiled as she shook her head. “Wow.
That’s so rude.
Not all Espers, Kellen.
I don’t have an obsession, at least, not as far as I know.” She said, her gray eyes full of life again.
Kellen gave her a squeeze, before he pushed her off of him and onto the bed, much to her complaint.
“Hmm.
I’ll have to think about that.
Now get up, I didn’t just come here to make sure you’re okay, but to also ask for your help.
But we need to go talk to Gunther too.” Gwen, who had been ready to get mad at him, shut her mouth.
Guiltily, she looked away, scratching her arm. “Is it…does it have to do with Mom?” She asked softly, and Kellen nodded.
He gripped his cane, slowly getting to his feet.
Sitting down was not his favourite thing, since getting up stretched everything in his thigh.
It was very painful, but he didn’t want to worry anyone.
He didn’t speak until he was fully on his feet. “Yes.
She has no fresh clothes, and she doesn’t want to leave Dad’s side.
I wanted to ask you to go pick up some clothes for the both of them.
Rhys offered them his apartment so that they could be close to Taylor in case they need help, and Mom accepted his offer today.
She’s worried that someone else might have done something to the house, so she only agreed to send you if you had some Espers that Rhys and I trusted with you.” Gwen’s jaw hardened, before she nodded, determined. “Okay.
When?” She asked, and Kellen sighed, slowly making his way towards the door.
The pain was gone thanks to the Healer, but his muscles were still stiff from sitting down without stretching. “Today, hopefully.
That’s why we need to speak to Gunther.” Gwen quickly got to her feet, and rushed to open the door for Kellen.
Kellen chuckled, glad that his sister was slowly coming back to herself. “Fuck.
Well, I’m glad to get out of that stuffy room.” She muttered, glancing at Kellen, and his leg and cane, before meeting his gaze.
“I…They were saying rude things about you and Dad.” She admitted, her hand on the doorknob.
Kellen’s expression softened.
He had a feeling it was something like that. “Yeah?” He said, and she sighed. “I just wanted to shut them up.” Gwen muttered, kicking her foot, and Kellen reached out, ruffling her hair.
She didn’t even protest, and that told Kellen that their words had been pretty bad. “Well, I’m glad you stood up for us.
Next time, do it outside of class.
Or get one of the lieutenants to stand witness.
You know better than to just swing without setting yourself up for an easy way out.
Make it a lesson, or something that they would be too embarrassed to bring up in public.” Kellen told her warmly, and Gwen sighed heavily.
She nodded, her shoulders slumping. “But you can’t blame me for it, right?
You were both injured, and I was supposed to behave like nothing was happening.” She complained, and Kellen chuckled. “Even more reason to ‘teach them a lesson’.
I doubt Hill or Gunther would have said no to it.” Gwen sighed. “Yeah, but that’s using your connections.” Kellen ruffled her hair even more. “I’m your big brother.
I make them so you can use them, so do it.
Honestly, you could also play the ‘my brother-in-law is the Captain’ card too.
I kinda made that one, but Rhys would tell you himself to use it.” A knock sounded on the door and Gwen blinked as the doorknob was taken out of her hand.
A pair of glowing, yellow eyes glinted at both of them as the man on the other side grinned at them. “I second it.
I would tell you to use it, and freely as well.
Any use you can get out of me as my family, I welcome, Gwen.” Kellen’s grin was wide as he looked at his sister. “See?
So next time, punch them where it really hurts.
Their pride.” CREATORS’ THOUGHTS CalyB The Captain calling Gwen his family?
