- Chapter 229 - Chapter 229 A little bit of Field Guide training never hurt no one
Chapter 229: A little bit of Field Guide training never hurt no one Chapter 229: A little bit of Field Guide training never hurt no one Kellen and Rhys entered into the room that Kellen had marched into before, and found that the new recruits were doing different exercises now.
Gunther, when he spotted them, had a damn smirk on his face, and Kellen did his best not to react.
The Captain, however, had a wide, shit-eating grin on his face. He was so pleased, so happy, that he couldn’t hide it from anyone.
That made Kellen embarrassed, and that only made Gunther laugh. “Oh look who looks like the cat that got the cream?
What were you two up to while Esper Woods was back here slaving away?” Kellen couldn’t make eye contact with him as Gunther scanned him.
“Well, at least Kellen isn’t limping more, so good job there, Rhys.” Gunther gave him a thumbs up, and Rhys grumbled. “I wouldn’t do that to Kellen so soon.
The man needs his rest.
He’s healing, Gunther.
I’m not that kind of a monster.” Kellen jerked his head towards him, and Rhys froze. “You aren’t a monster at all, Captain.” Kellen said harshly, and Rhys chuckled. “Of course.
Whatever you say, Kellen.” Still angry, mainly because he brushed him off easily, and didn’t sound like he believed him, Kellen tightened his grip on the Captain’s arms. “Oh?
Whatever I say, huh?” The energy in the room shifted.
Most of the people here were new recruits, who viewed the Captain as a nearly god-like entity.
They were not used to seeing their Captain bow down to another, let alone a Guide.
It was awkward, and Kellen, not one who wanted to weaken his authority, grit his teeth and held himself back.
“We are going to discuss this later.” Kellen growled, and Rhys’ eyes shifted slightly.
Dipping into the gold shade that always spelled trouble for Kellen. “Promise?” He whispered, and Kellen slapped his bicep. “Stop it!” He hissed, and Rhys laughed.
Gunther at least, seemed pleased to see them laughing like this.
Kellen had worried that the man was going to be a stick in the mud again after whoever did that to his face.
He had no idea who would have done it, but the fact that Gunther hadn’t gotten it cleared up… Well, it left a few guesses to who it could have been. “Anyways.” Kellen said, ignoring the way that Rhys’ shoulders shook as he tried to ignore him.
“I need to borrow Gwen for a bit.
I need her help grabbing some things from home, and with Mom and Dad being indisposed, she’ll need to do it.” Gunther nodded.
“I had a feeling it was something like that.
Is she going alone?” He asked. “No.
She’s going to go with a few of the senior Espers of the Guild.
Mrs.
Woods orders.” Rhys said, speaking for Kellen and Kellen didn’t feel upset about it.
It was…cute.
Gunther glanced over at where Gwen was.
She was practising a few moves involving hand eye coordination with a small group of other Espers.
All new recruits. Kellen didn’t see the one she had punched.
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
Or at least, it wasn’t obvious who she punched.
The little devils. “Gunther, who was it that Gwen had an altercation with?” Kellen asked, and Gunther’s eyes widened. “Oh, I wasn’t here that day.
It was Hill.
Hmm, I think I remember her saying…” He turned and glanced around the room.
“Huh.
He must have gone to his mandatory guiding session right after you arrived.” Kellen’s gaze narrowed, and Gunther glanced back at him.
“Do you want me to shoot you a text when he comes back?” Kellen nodded. “Yeah.
Apparently, I need to prove to some idiots that I’m scary.” Gunther snorted, shaking his head. “They haven’t been to the front lines yet, Kellen.
They don’t know how important you are yet.
Go easy on them, alright?” Kellen glanced at Gunther, and gave him a slow, dangerous smile. “Tell me that after you find out that they were speaking ill of your Father who just got shot, and we can compare reactions.” Gunther’s face darkened. “Oh.
Well, if that’s the case, make sure he comes back with all his limbs.
I won’t ask how they were reattached as long as we can still use him.” Rhys laughed, reaching out and squeezing his shoulder. “Now that Kellen’s got your permission, let’s go somewhere to chat a little more privately.
You don’t mind, Kellen?” Kellen shook his head, and watched as the two moved quickly to one of the other training rooms. Kellen realised that they had left him in charge of the group of new recruits without really telling him so.
It was especially obvious when they all finished the sets assigned to them by Gunther and turned to stare at him.
Gwen gasped. “Are you taking over our training?” She asked, excited, and Kellen had to bite the inside of his mouth to hide his smile. “Gwen, you shouldn’t sound so excited.
The Field Guides weep when it’s my turn compared to Brent.” She smiled widely, clapping her hands. “But this would be the first time I’ve had you as a teacher!” She exclaimed, and that got the other Espers all worked up.
Pretty soon, he had a full room of Espers staring at him with big, colourful eyes and he was folding quickly. “Fine!
I’ll give you what you want, but you aren’t going to like it.” Kellen grumbled, and a roar of excitement came from the group. Kellen was right that they were going to regret it soon.
They always did. About 15 minutes later, the Captain and Lieutenant Gunther came back to a room quiet.
It wasn’t that there weren’t any people in it, it was that they were all focused, intent, and sweat was dripping down their bodies. Kellen stood where he had been left, having not moved an inch since they had gone.
The workouts that he had ordered had seemed simple enough, but the durations he had given out were hellish.
Even Gwen had lost her sparkle as she attempted to do what Kellen had asked of them Gunther was impressed. “Holy.
I think I need to sit in on what you’re doing with the Field Guides.
Is it always this quiet when you’re training them?” Kellen chuckled at Gunther’s impressed voice.
He shook his head in response. “Oh no.
My students are still able to talk.
It seems like your Espers are behind my Field Guides.” It stirred something in the room, and Kellen felt several Espers glare at him.
His lips twitched.
He had just sparked a sense of rivalry between them, and it was a good thing.
Espers who got complacent got lazy.
And laziness led to mistakes that couldn’t be afforded in gates.
“Damn.
Well, I’m going to have to go over your notes for your classes.
Are they where I would normally find the Esper workouts?
Or did you guys have a special place for them on the Guild website?
Do I have to go look somewhere else in the files?” Kellen shook his head. “No, Espers weren’t included when I was sending it to Casper, and I only needed his approval originally.
I can send them to you through email though.
You might be frustrated.
Sometimes Brent and I just write ‘yesterday, but worse.'” Gunther burst into laughter, hunching over.
Even the Captain was chuckling.
It was around that time that Esper Blake arrived.
She seemed to be about to take over for Gunther in some regard, but when she spotted Rhys and Kellen, she froze. A look of horror and pain crossed her face, and Kellen knew she was going to bolt.
So, he did the classic trick.
Without even a glance at anyone else, he tossed his cane and watched as six Espers in the room jerked. This included Rhys, but thankfully, he was in touching distance and Kellen was able to place his hand on him to stop him.
Rhys gave Kellen an angry look, but Kellen wasn’t worried about him. He watched as Blake fought with herself, before with a huff, she rushed over to the cane and picked it up.
Marching over to Kellen, her face contorted into an angry expression, she opened Kellen’s hand, and shoved the cane back into place. “What were you thinking?
You need that!” She scolded, her silver eyes bright and angry.
Kellen chuckled. “I was thinking that you were going to run away at the sight of me, and I needed a trap.
Captain, grab her.” Anyone else would have been surprised by the way that Kellen was ordering the Captain around.
Everyone but the Captain. Cheerfully, the Captain of the Saturn Guild, her boss, let go of Kellen and wrapped both of his hands around her arms, picking her up like she was a bookcase. “Where are we going, Boss?” Rhys teased, and Kellen glanced at Gwen.
She felt his stare, and looked up, meeting his gaze.
Kellen, knowing he had limited time before he needed to go to his own class, pointed at her and motioned for her to join them.
Gunther, who had some idea what was going on, shook his head with a sigh. “I guess I’ll just teach the next class.” He muttered, and Kellen smiled at him warmly. “You’re too kind, Gunther.
I owe you cookies.” Gunther’s cheeks creased as he smiled. “Two batches, Kellen.
I mean it.
I want to be able to rub it in Hill’s face!” Blake still seemed to be in shock as the Captain hummed a tune to himself and escorted her out of the training room ahead of Kellen.
Gwen remained at Kellen’s side, since it was obvious Kellen couldn’t move as quickly, and that it frustrated him. “Take her to the room you and Gunther just came from.
We need to talk, and we can’t let her get away.” It sounded ominous, but Kellen didn’t mean it that way.
He’d always thought of Esper Blake when it came to sending Gwen to the house with some Espers.
She had, after all, helped him protect his Dad.
Of course he was going to rely on her to help him protect his sister.
