Chapter 253: Just a day in the life Chapter 253: Just a day in the life Kellen was all smiles, warm and welcoming as he led the anxious child towards the Medical Bay.
Brent was the same, and for some reason, that seemed to comfort the young man that they were bringing in.
Some of the other Guides who saw him gave him pitying looks, and it was clear that he had no idea why. It had nothing to do with Kellen and Brent, honestly, and everything to do with the Healer Espers who resided in the Medical Bay.
They were…a little more rough and tumble.
Harsher around the edges. Still caring, just, if you had done it to yourself?
Or someone else had done a severe level of harm to you? There was a reason Kellen was good friends with Taylor. So, Kellen and Brent brought the kid to them, and when one of the Healers saw him, their whole face went white.
Thankfully, they recovered quickly, put in the emergency call for Taylor, and went about getting the kid to undress for him so that he could see the state of his body. Kellen knew that at least one of them, Brent or Kellen, had to go back and teach the class that they had planned, but it was clear that neither one of them wanted to leave the kid alone.
That, and the kid grew anxious whenever one of them shifted behind him. Both of the Field Guides remained standing, arms crossed, near the door.
Silent, but loud protectors.
It wasn’t necessary, given the way that when any Healer saw him, their eyes turned green.
It wasn’t something that either Kellen or Brent could stop.
Not after Brent had hung out and been trained by Kellen. Kellen hated shit like this. How many other Guides did he know that got taken advantage of like this?
Maybe not this level, but it was never something pleasant to be faced with.
In fact, Kellen called Rene, and had the healers tending to the kid to take photos. The kid just went along with it, guzzling down the cookies and cream shakes handed to him with a fervor that told him and everyone around him that even his basic food intake had been restricted.
Kellen wanted to break something, he was so angry.
Guiding Center C was going to have a cultural flip if there was anything he could do about it. Rene, for her part, didn’t ask why Kellen was contacting her, and instead got to business.
Because she was affiliated with the Nemesis Guild, she would have to let Pamela, or Captain Thatcher know that he had contacted her and planned to hire her as a contractor of sorts. Kellen, for his part, at least sent Pamela a warning message and explained why he needed to use Rene. His Mom had been too long out of the business, and Rene specialized in representing clients that had been taken advantage of.
Plus, Kellen was pretty sure that the two of them had gone to school together, and interned at the same firm, but did not practise the same thing. “You stay.” Kellen said to Brent as time ticked closer and closer for their first class to start.
“I don’t need to move much in the class, and if I need help, I’ll just yank an Esper from a hallway or something.
You stay here.
Keep an eye on the kid.
You’ll make sure that he’ll eat and take a break.” Kellen said and Brent glanced at him. It was clear that Brent was aware that leaving him behind was a significant thing for him.
Kellen was vibrating with anger.
Brent nodded. “I’ll look after him, Kellen.
You know that.” Brent assured him, and Kellen nodded.
It was the only reason he was okay leaving him behind.
Taylor hadn’t shown up yet, but Kellen anticipated that.
She was busy.
There was a reason they had assigned times to visit her.
But that also meant he was a little hesitant to leave the kid who had come to him to ‘help’ him by himself. So, it was a relief that Brent was going to stay behind.

It wasn’t a trust thing, it was a solidarity thing.
The kid clearly didn’t have anyone in his corner till now, and Kellen wasn’t going to let him feel that way anymore. “Thank you, Brent.” Kellen told him, not taking his gaze off of the nervous boy sitting in the chair before him.
He looked even worse then Kellen had seen him only a few days ago. Skinny?
He looked like a toothpick.
How anyone could see him and think that he could guide them he had no fucking clue.
Unless the kid was unregistered, there should be no reason for him to- Kellen’s mouth firmed into a thin line, his body shaking. “I’m going to kill them.” Kellen muttered and Brent grunted.
He had a gleam to his green eyes that Kellen felt mirrored his own. “Let’s just say, the Field Guide name is going to take a beating.” ~ Kellen had to leave after that, and arrived at the obstacle course room in a foul mood.
All of the trainees were surprised at the storm cloud that followed him, and the fact that Brent wasn’t with him. “Uh, is Guide Jameson alright?” They asked and Kellen nodded, his grip tight on his cane. “Yes, he is perfectly fine.
We had, I had a Guide come in who I had given my card to.
He’s not…in the best condition.
Guide Jameson is making sure that he knows he is being taken care of now.” The Guides, who had witnessed Kellen’s harsh treatment of the Guides who hadn’t done their jobs correctly, some personally, seemed surprised to hear his words. Well, some were, while others didn’t think it was strange at all.
Bree was one of them. “Are they okay?” She asked, clearly concerned and Kellen’s expression remained stiff. “They will be.” He declared, before he ran them through the training session for the day.
It was grueling, but not because Kellen was punishing them with his anger.
It was because they were entering into the last half of the training program he had created.
The first two weeks were a cake walk in comparison to the second half.
This had to do with the fact that he was pretty sure most weren’t going to want to do a full six month program.
They were going to want to become a Field Guide as fast as possible.
So Kellen had made a course that would, relatively, allow them to do so. They were going to be frequent guests at the Medical Bay for sore muscles, but hopefully that was it.
But, well, breaking a bone or two would also build character.
He just wasn’t going to aim for that, and train everyone how to land properly. The first class, because they were the ‘advanced’ class, had a harsher, more intense lesson.
By the time that the timer went off signaling the end of class, all of them were spread out on the floor, panting.
Everyone was wiped, and Kellen felt a little strange. He normally ran through the exercises with them, but was currently unable to.
He was sure if he attempted to, Rhys would fly down from wherever he was and ‘punish’ him in some way that would embarrass him so profoundly he was worried he’d never recover. That, of course, didn’t include what Brent would do to him if he did it without him around.
The other Guides were good, but they weren’t Field Guide good.
They’d barely touched first aid so far.
That was for later in the week. Kellen said goodbye to the class, met up with his first guiding session of the day, received messages about how the kid was doing from Brent, and went about the rest of his day worrying about everything under the sun. His Dad had clearly woken up again and had been given his phone since Kellen was receiving texts from him throughout the day.
His Dad apparently found out about the kid, and now he’d been yanked into his Dad’s room and was being monitored from there as he ‘took care’ of him. Brent had sent him a several paragraph message about that, and it’d only made Kellen chuckle. His Dad was probably going to get better looking after someone then just sitting in a bed by himself with his Mom walking a hole into the floor as she grew more anxious by the minute.
Which meant that Brent was now free from his babysitting duties, and Kellen wasn’t unsupervised moving around the Guild. Not that he truly ever was.
He could feel every damn gaze on him like needles.
Everyone was ready to catch him if he took a tumble.
He’d fake stumbled into the elevator, just to test it, and found four, FOUR Espers coming out of the woodworks, ready to catch him. He understood a bit better why Rhys had been so desperate before, and begrudgingly admitted to himself that he had been right from a Captain perspective. That didn’t mean Kellen was happy with this kind of treatment, but he didn’t have to be.
He was closer to accomplishing his goal of getting new blood into the Guild, and Guiding Center A had sent over their selection of Guides they wanted to ‘offer’ Kellen. Pawn off, was more like it, but it was a good selection, and the Manager wasn’t dumb enough to include the Guides who had caused Kellen distress.
She didn’t like him, but she wasn’t evil. Guiding Center B had done that ages ago, but Kellen just told them to send him four people.
He didn’t care who, since he knew that everyone there would be well trained and able to deal with most of the Espers coming their way. Well, maybe.
No one was quite ready to deal with Espers, but they would at least be calm while dealing with it, and then panic about it on the backend.
They would probably come to Kellen about any concerns they had, but Kellen didn’t want to step on Casper’s toes. Speaking of, Kellen should probably check up on him.
See how he was doing during his rest period.
CREATORS’ THOUGHTS CalyB Brent and Kellen are going to roll up in their Field Guide uniforms, black masks covering their faces, and beat the life out of the manager and anyone who allowed it to happen.
There are plenty of other people who would be questioned first, right?
And hey, Kellen won’t record it this time.
