(BL) Hunting The Field Guide - Chapter 272
Chapter 272: A direct challenge Chapter 272: A direct challenge Kellen and Rhys continued drinking, well, Rhys continued drinking as the night sky deepened.
Rhys wouldn’t let Kellen witness him as he reset himself, moving Kellen off of his lap every time he felt the need to do so. It confused Kellen, since he was sure he could accept from Rhys, but Rhys clearly wanted to keep that to himself.
Even if Kellen told him over and over that it was totally okay, Rhys just smiled, patted his uninjured thigh, and disappeared for a few minutes upstairs. Kellen didn’t let that ruin his night though, and even if it was a nagging thought in the back of his mind, the two of them managed to have a good night, spent in each other’s company and Kellen woke up the next morning wrapped in Rhys’ arms. It was a small, but welcome new reality. The alarm blaring didn’t even phase him, but the man who had put away enough liquor to feed a whole group of Espers after a gate raid on the front lines wasn’t as pleased. Groaning, Rhys grumbled, his arms which he had around Kellen’s waist, tightening and Kellen flushed as Rhys’ morning wood rubbed against his ass.
Kellen felt his whole body stiffen as Rhys rubbed his nose against the back of his neck, his breath tickling his skin. “Isn’t that too early?
You aren’t going to attempt to go to the gym, are you?” Rhys’ voice was thick with sleep, sending a shiver down Kellen’s spine. “U-Uh I just forgot to change it.” Kellen murmured, and Rhys sighed, kissing the skin in front of him slowly.
The soft texture of his lips against Kellen’s skin caused a happy shiver to run down his spine, spreading out from the area Rhys was touching. “Good.
We’re going back to sleep.
I have a meeting with Gunther right away, and I need my Kellen body pillow recharge before that.” He informed Kellen, his grip tightening around him and Kellen didn’t know what to say. “Body pillow?” Kellen replied and Rhys chuckled. “Yes.
You’re my body pillow.
Or I guess, my little spoon?
Does that bother you?” Rhys asked, his lips brushing against Kellen’s skin as he spoke.
Kellen lay on his side, his body frozen.
He wasn’t sure what to do in this situation.
Rhys’ cock was pressed against his ass, his hold was tight, and his lips and voice felt provocative, but at the same time this felt…nice. This didn’t feel sexual, though he was sure everything should point in that direction.
This just felt…nice. “Not really.” Kellen replied, his own voice deep with sleep.
He felt his body slowly relax against the bed as he sighed.
“I just haven’t been called a body pillow before.” Kellen told him.
“I’m too tough.
Or hard.” Rhys chuckled, pressing another kiss against Kellen’s skin. “You could be harder.” He murmured.
“I hate that you’re working so hard that your muscles are fading.
I don’t care if you have them, I really mean it, but I do like when you have them.” Rhys was grumbling, clearly trying to make sure that Kellen didn’t take his words to heart.
Kellen felt his shoulder’s shake as he laughed. “I know that, Rhys.
It’s fine.
Just close your eyes and go back to sleep.” Kellen patted one of the hands wrapped around his midsection.
Rhys chuckled. “You’re the boss.” He said, before settling in closer to Kellen and the two drifted off together again. ~ The day was going smoothly.
Classes were easy, Casper and his new friend, Charlie, were getting along swell with Kellen’s Dad in the Medical Bay.
Kellen’s Dad was recovering quickly, mostly to Taylor’s credit, but also due to his Mom’s care and his Dad looking after the other two Guides. The contracts and background checks were being expedited thanks to Uncle Tom’s influence.
Kellen didn’t ask, but his Mom got the text from Uncle Tom about it and she passed it along to him.
Kellen didn’t thank him.
He hadn’t asked for a favour, so he was just going to accept the help easily. Casper had helped Kellen select the Guides.

Kellen had removed where the Guides were from from their resumes when he handed over their files to Casper to look over, and it was surprising how Casper was able to just…select a few from each center without knowing.
A little spooky, but then again, he didn’t have years of experience for nothing. Their Field Guide classes were going well, and the advanced class could soon start working with weapons.
At least basic ones.
Kellen wasn’t one who felt comfortable working with guns with newbies, so they were going to get solid weapons first.
Something that would always work in a gate and was easy to carry.
Bats, batons, short knives, and if they seemed capable, machetes for clearing purposes. There were other weapons they could use, of course, but Kellen didn’t want to rush them.
Plus, Brent specialised in everything but guns, while that was Kellen’s point of interest.
In fact, Brent wanted Kellen to demonstrate what good control over weapons was, and so Kellen had done that today. They had brought the kids to the firing range, and they had all watched Kellen shoot several different types of guns and other firing weapons.
They had all been rather impressed, and then they’d gone back up to the Guide training rooms and Brent had shown off his skills against a regular, non-modified training dummy. Kellen was sure he was never going to be allowed to use a training bot, not after his ‘accident’, so this was the best they were going to get.
Tragic, but he’d made his bed.
Maybe if he ever felt like he wanted it enough to beg Rhys for it, he would consider it.
As of right now?
It wasn’t that big of a deal to him. Lunch came quickly, and Rhys found him and forced him to eat while he fed him in his office.
This time he didn’t make any comments, but he didn’t need to.
His eyes did all the talking for him, and Kellen was a blushing, flustered mess as he tried to continue to work. Pamela had stopped by during lunch to discuss the plan for hosting a ‘fuck you, I’m still alive’ press conference and the three of them hammered out the details for security, who was going to be there, and when.
Pamela’s expression was grim, her pink eyes tired with deep circles under them.
Kellen was worried about her, but it was clear that she was at least listening to his threat from before. She looked better then she had the other day when he’d last seen her. Pamela needed to coordinate with the D.E.C.
for security purposes, so after getting all the information that she needed from them, she gave a heavy sigh, took about ten minutes sitting on Kellen’s couch, and then got up and told them she’d head over to the D.E.C.
to speak to the Esper in charge while Uncle Tom was on the front lines. Rhys wished her good luck, and told her he’d see her up in the conference room shortly.
She gave him a nod, waved to Kellen tiredly, and headed out. Shortly after Rhys had left him after lunch, and right before one of Kellen’s guiding sessions, he received a text from Pamela confirming the date and time of the press conference. Two days from now. It felt a little surreal.
Kellen still knew damn near nothing about the people who had attacked his Dad, but he wasn’t going to stay quiet about it either.
Not after he announced his pairing with Rhys.
Not after he defended himself after he’d punished their previous Guides. Kellen hadn’t really been one to hold his tongue most of his life.
He didn’t want to start now, not when it came to the safety of his family and his friends.
It was also an attack against the Captain, against his city, and against everything he stood for. These monsters were going to learn that they weren’t the biggest and scariest things around. They were trying to fuck with his city.
They were going to pay. Taylor, the Captain, and Kellen discussed the plan before and after their guiding session at the end of the day.
Taylor was worried.
She knew his Dad was going to want to be there, and so was his Mom.
Kellen thought it would be a bad idea if either of them were there. His Dad wasn’t fully healed and it still wasn’t confirmed that he had been the target.
Kellen felt that that was the case, but those fuckers were too afraid to confirm it.
Taylor worried that they’d circumnavigate Kellen’s orders, and everyone else’s, with his Mom’s powers. It was a valid concern, and they were in the process of trying to come up with a solution to this problem when all of their phones went off at the same time.
Kellen fumbled with his phone, Gwen’s number flashing on the screen. Worried, he answered the phone, and Gwen’s hurried voice didn’t even greet him on the other side as Rhys and Taylor answered their own similar phone calls. “Turn on the news.
Right fucking now.” She ordered, and Kellen realised that the fuckers had just been biding their time. They were finally making themselves known.
