Chapter 274: Ways to convince you Chapter 274: Ways to convince you Kellen burst into his Dad’s room to find his Dad holding onto his Mom’s arm, and Casper trying to calm her down from the other side.
The newer Guide was tucked into the corner in a chair, watching everything with rather large eyes while a few Espers lingered in the room, obviously having been told to remain back. “Don’t even think about it.” Kellen barked as he stepped into the room.
His Mom’s eyes were glowing bright purple as she snapped her head towards him. “You do not get to order me around like that.” She responded back, and Kellen knew that whoever he was talking to, wasn’t fully his Mom.
He wasn’t upset.
At least, not about that.
His Mom was overwhelmed, overtired, probably hadn’t been guided properly, and had just found out that her husband not only had been targeted, but would continue to be targeted until he was dead Kellen wondered only briefly how Rhys was doing, before shaking himself and glaring at his Mother. “Yes I do if I think you’re going to attempt to do something so incredibly stupid even my trainee Field Guides wouldn’t do it.” Her jaw clenched and Kellen glanced at his Dad.
He was pale, shocked, but his grey eyes were determined.
“Are you really going to leave Dad behind to go enact some kind of revenge?
Really?
Sure, he can live without you, but not for long.
Are you going to make what that fucker just said a self-fulfilling prophecy?” He demanded and his Mom looked away from him. She was pissed.
She was angry.
Hell, they all were, but Kellen wasn’t letting his feelings cloud his judgement as much as she was. “You don’t know-” “Don’t you even dare say that right now.” Kellen’s voice held a thin edge to it and she shut her mouth.
“You’re lucky I’m not getting mad at you for being reckless with your life as your son, and only for Dad right now.” She flinched and Kellen was sure his eyes were glowing in his face as well.
He couldn’t help it.
He watched as his Dad’s eyes shifted to blue as well. Hell, everyone who could had glowing eyes right now. It was a tense time. The door slammed against the wall behind him and Kellen sidestepped/had Rhys pull him to the side as Gwen stormed into the room.
She was in her training uniform, sweat pooling on her forehead as she quickly glanced around the room before pointing a finger at her Mom. “No!” She declared and Kellen burst out laughing. “I’m glad to see we are of the same mind.” He joked as she turned her own purple gaze towards her brother.
She was short of breath, her body slightly trembling as she looked over Kellen completely.
He was in his normal Guide uniform today and she swallowed. “No to you too.” She said and Kellen smirked. “I’m not going to do something so foolish.” Her eyes narrowed and she crossed her arms.
“But you are going to do something foolish.
I can feel it.” She told him.
Kellen opened his mouth to complain that it wasn’t a fair thing to say, but Rhys spoke over his shoulder. “He’s holding a press conference.” He told the room and received mixed reviews from the words.
Gwen groaned, along with his Dad, while Casper nodded and Kellen’s Mom’s behaviour didn’t change. “Are you dumb?
That’s exactly what they want!” Gwen protested.
Kellen turned his glare towards his pair who shrugged and looked away.
Clearly, Rhys didn’t agree with Kellen’s actions on a personal level, but was allowing him to do so on a Captain’s level.
It was sweet, until he threw him to the wolves. “I had just hammered out the details before he did this.” Kellen soothed.
His Dad looked stricken on the bed. “They are going to shoot you.
You know that they are going to aim for you.” Kellen nodded. “And I’m going to have people to protect me.
Do you think I would go in without any planning?
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
Do you think he would allow me to do it without any protection?
I’m going to be wearing bullet proof vests, I’ll have Espers who can create shields, everything.
I’m not going to go in without care, and I also need to do this.
Unlike what Mom is planning, we need to show that we are not shaken.” Kellen told them, and his Dad frowned. “You don’t need to do this.
If anything, I should-” He was cut off by three voices shouting at the same time. “No!” The Woods family cried in unison and Henry Woods sat and blinked his eyes in silence.
Before he couldn’t help himself and a snort escaped his lips.
He covered his face, his shoulders shaking and the tension in the room broke as he began to laugh. “I had no idea you three would be so in sync on this topic.” His Dad chortled, his body shaking as he continued to laugh.
Kellen watched as the angry aura around his Mom dimmed slowly as his Dad continued to laugh.
“Ellie.” He called, and she turned, her expression softening slightly as she looked at him. “You can’t convince me.” She said, but Kellen could already tell she was folding. “Ellie, come here.” His gaze was still blue as he held open his arms to her and she trembled, stepping forward.
Kellen glanced around the room, meeting everyone’s gaze and slowly, the group left the room, letting them have some alone time. Kellen ran his hands through his hair, sighing heavily as he watched the door intently.
Him and Gwen were doing the same thing.
It was too high for her to jump, and she wouldn’t risk their Dad in that way.
They didn’t have to worry about the window, since the glass was supposed to be S Grade.
Rhys told them that quietly when they were leaving. Taylor met the large group in the hallway, her expression grim as she looked over the Woods siblings. “How are negotiations?” She asked and Gwen shook her head, her expression grim. “He’s doing his best right now.
We’ll have to see.
I don’t want to have to hunt down my Mom for her own safety, but I’ll do it.” She stated grimly.
“I’m not as good as her.
I’ll need help, and that will slow me down.
We don’t even know where these bastards are, and also, you’re a damn fool.” She turned to her brother and smacked his head lightly.
Kellen rubbed the spot even if she had reduced her strength. “Ow!
What was that for?” He demanded and Gwen glared at him.
“For setting up and walking into your own damn trap, that’s what!” She told him and Kellen frowned. “I’m not doing that.
I just don’t want these fuckers to think that they can waltz into our city, into our homes and do whatever the fuck they want.
I don’t mind being the face of anger directed at them, and I’m the one who can do it out of the two of us.” Kellen gestured to his cane.
“I can walk.
Dad shouldn’t be moving.
No doubt Taylor was about to say the same thing.” Taylor’s expression was pale as she nodded. “The throat is a delicate place, where if I don’t have enough control many things could go wrong.
He’s stable, but the skin is so fragile right now that I just….He’s supposed to be relaxing, letting his body heal.
I can’t believe they took over the damn news.” She muttered as she leaned against the hallway wall, her eyes also on the patient door. Silence hung in the air for a long moment before Rhys cleared his throat. “Your Dad will be able to convince your Mom, I can feel it.
I know that Kellen would be able to do the same for me, so I can only imagine what your parents, who have years of companionship under their belts, can use to convince each other to bend to the other’s will.” Both siblings made disgusted faces at Rhys’ words. “Oh yuck.
Why would you say it like that?” Gwen said and Kellen nodded, his face scrunched up. “I don’t want to know ANYTHING.” Kellen declared.
“Not a single thing.” Rhys’ eyes were light as he looked at the pair of siblings. “Wow.
I had no idea the two of you were so opposed to such thoughts.
They’re your parents, and they had two of you.
They are also so openly affectionate with each other.
You must know-” “Shut your mouth, Captain Thatcher.” Kellen told him, and Rhys couldn’t help but laugh. “Well, that’s adorable.” He muttered quietly to himself and Kellen felt his face heat. “We don’t need to know anything.
If I haven’t seen it, I don’t know about it.” Gwen glossed over what the Captain had said to Kellen, her cheeks slightly pink.
Kellen nodded, looking away from Rhys. “Agreed.” Rhys continued to chuckle softly while Kellen jerked his shoulder away from his touch.
Kellen’s face was warm as they continued to watch the door intently.
