Chapter 277: The second best compatibility Chapter 277: The second best compatibility The conference room was in complete disarray. Hill was barely holding on by a strand, and even with Gunther and some of the other Espers’ help, it didn’t seem to help. It was jarring to see Gunther after everything he had heard, but Kellen did his best not to react negatively to the sight of him.
Gunther’s wound had healed up considerably, and Kellen wondered if it had anything to do with his conversation with Rhys.
Was he just trying to show it off to the people who cared about him? Kellen wouldn’t ever have the answer to that question.
He was never going to be able to ask Gunther, since he wasn’t going to reveal that he knew what was going on.
Especially since he was sure he wasn’t going to be able to hide his negative reaction. Kellen could lie if it came to work.
He’d perfected the ‘perfect Guide’ because he’d needed it for Guiding Center B, but this was a completely different situation.
Kellen didn’t like lying to the people who he cared about, and Gunther, unfortunately, fell into that category. No, that was mean.
Kellen wouldn’t have found it unfortunate to care about him before he knew the information that he did.
It wasn’t far to the man. Either way, Gunther and Hill were doing their best in the Captain’s absence, but Hill practically cried when she saw Rhys enter with Kellen in his arms. “Hill, get the pillow chair ready for Kellen.” Rhys ordered before anything else and Kellen couldn’t help but be embarrassed. “I don’t-” One look from those yellow eyes and Kellen shut his mouth, even if he wanted to protest more.
Kellen hadn’t been sitting on a soft chair and he had been fine, now that he had that cream, but the Captain clearly wasn’t going to hear it.
Kellen wasn’t an idiot.
Now that he knew Rhys better, he knew when he should and when he shouldn’t push him.
Right now was that time. Hill zipped around, getting the same chair ready that he’d sat in before.
For some reason, being ordered around by the Captain appeared to soothe her somewhat.
By the time that Kellen had been put down in the giant pillow, she seemed to have a more rational head on her shoulders. “Give me a breakdown of what’s going on.” Rhys asked as a few of the other Esper’s approached.
Kellen wasn’t allowed to pay attention to what he was saying as Pamela swept into the room, looking slightly crazed and stormed over to Kellen. “You and I need to talk.” She declared as Kellen blinked up at her in surprise.
Her arms were full of papers, her little tablet, and her pink eyes had a hard edge to them. “Uh, okay?” Kellen replied as she dropped everything down on the table next to him and yanked the chair out, sitting down. “Your plan, are you still planning to go through with it?” She demanded and Kellen nodded slowly. “Yes.
Why would this announcement stop me?
It’s actually only made me more determined.” Kellen told her and she groaned, but didn’t say a negative word against him. “Alright.
Well, obviously you are aware that the situation has changed.” Kellen nodded.
“So, the Peach Guild and the Nemesis Guild have both reached out after hearing that we were going to be hosting a press conference and want to have representatives there.
Are you against that?” Kellen glanced over at Rhys who was busy speaking to the others before he turned back to Pamela. “I’m not opposed, but you should check in with the Captain to make sure that he’s okay with that.” Pamela smirked. “He’ll be fine.
The more Esper’s there that could potentially protect you, the better in his books.” Pamela yanked her tablet up and began to rapidly type.
“Alright.
I’ll let both Guilds know.
How is the recruitment for new Guides going?” She asked. “Just waiting on background checks.” Kellen told her and she nodded. “Good.
That would be one positive piece of information to receive right now.
The public is losing their minds over everything that has been revealed.” Kellen could only imagine the type of shit she was fielding right now.
There was a reason Pamela looked like she was about to explode, but not in an Esper way. “Do you need some guiding?” Kellen asked, concerned, and Pamela froze. “You aren’t allowed to do that.” She replied quickly, and Kellen chuckled. “Haven’t you heard?
Because I told Casper to take care of himself, I’ve been given clearance to guide others by the Captain.
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
Obviously, only at the base level, but even if I hadn’t been given permission, you don’t look well, Pamela.” Kellen told her and she swallowed. “I just…f-five minutes, alright?” She offered her hand to Kellen and he chuckled.
Clearly, she was worse off then he believed if she was offering it up by herself.
Pamela gave him the impression of someone who hated to inconvenience anyone, and worked really hard to keep herself composed. She didn’t like how she was right now, and Kellen kind of felt like he was taking advantage of that fact.
Not in a bad way, since he didn’t view healing her mind in a negative light, but he was using that against her in a sense. Kellen reached out, taking Pamela’s hand and was overwhelmed by the depth of her lack of guiding.
It made Kellen seriously worry about when she’d last sat down and been guided.
Had she also been on Casper’s roster?
Had he neglected her? Shaking himself, Kellen set to work.
He could worry about that after. Turning and placing both of his hands around Pamela’s, Kellen went for a fast and dirty guiding session since he had a feeling Pamela truly meant five minutes.
He hadn’t done this kind of guiding with his new Class yet because they hadn’t needed to train that aspect and were more concerned about his consistency levels when it came to guiding, especially an S Class. This kind of guiding didn’t show him the inside of the Esper and their current state, and instead focused on pushing as much guiding power into the Esper that they were willing to take.
With someone like Pamela, who was, in his mind’s eye ‘thirsty’, she would take whatever he offered. He watched as Pamela’s pink eyes went wide in surprise as Kellen moved mass amounts of his power towards her.
Her grip reflexively tightened around his hand before she struggled to escape. “W-Wait!
Guide Woods!” She protested and Kellen tightened his grip. “You were the one who said five minutes.” He warned and she began to panic more. “N-Not like this!
Stop!
I don’t need-” “If you break contact with me right now, are you going to deal with the side effects?” Kellen growled and she froze. “Side effects?” She asked softly and Kellen nodded. “I’m moving vast amounts of my power, and my body would view you withdrawing as a rejection.
Are you willing to put me into that state because you don’t trust me?” She froze.
It wasn’t as if she was quiet when she was protesting Kellen’s actions, and even Kellen could feel the gaze of the three Espers behind him. Obviously, the Captain was the worst of the trio, but it wasn’t as if Hill or Gunther weren’t protective of him. “You are the worst.” Pamela muttered, and Kellen grinned as she stopped resisting him. “I am not.” Kellen told her, slowing down his rate now that he knew he had a little more wiggle room.
Pamela seemed to soften now that he had reduced his rate of power flowing into her slightly. “Is it really that bad?” She asked quietly and Kellen chuckled. “Some Guides have passed out when Espers have rejected them mid session.
Depending on how much you’ve poured into the Esper, it can be pretty bad.
Obviously, it goes both ways, but because it happens so rarely with Guides, it also has a mental shock that can do quite a bit of damage.” Kellen told her, keeping track of the time as well as her levels.
She was dropping rapidly, which told Kellen that they were actually quite compatible.
Huh. That wasn’t too surprising since Pamela was clearly not an elemental type Esper, but it did feel higher than it should be.
Maybe their compatibility was in the 30’s?
That would be insane.
It would be Kellen’s first person who he had compatibility with that was actually…decent. He was never going to tell the Captain. He had a feeling that if Rhys found out, it would not end well.
Even if they had a 60 point difference, he might get jealous, and Kellen didn’t want to put Pamela in an awkward position like that.
He didn’t want to put anyone on the bad end of Rhys’ anger. “Oh.
Has it happened to you?” She asked carefully and Kellen chuckled. “Many times when I was a C Class.
Some Espers can be rather uppity and didn’t like that I was the Guide coming to their rescue.
Once they realised that there was no one else, they became more agreeable, but it was hard at first.” Kellen said with a slightly fond voice.
Having to use his fists to calm them down had been fun. Having to explain it to the others hadn’t been so much fun in the beginning.
After a while though, everyone basically began to follow the same principle.
Complain, get beat up.
Take what you can get.
The pretty girls and pretty boys on the front lines want nothing to do with a scrub like you.
CREATORS’ THOUGHTS CalyB After that huge speech to Casper about valuing him and everything, Rhys might turn around and move Pamela as far away from Kellen as possible.
Even though Kellen is not to Pamela’s taste.
He’s not a woman, for one, and he’s not 10 years older than her.
