Chapter 284: An explosive end to a press conference Chapter 284: An explosive end to a press conference “Wait!” Someone called desperately.
Kellen glanced over to find that it was a reporter.
“What about the fact that the E.A.G.
member who took over the news broadcast looked like Lieutenant Gunther from the Saturn Guild?” Sakura didn’t stop moving, but Kellen did. He did not want that to besmirch the Guild’s name, nor Gunther’s.
They both had a lot going on right now. Kellen knew his face had to be contorted into disgust as he moved the mic towards his face again. “Do you really believe that box dyed idiot has anything on our Lieutenant Gunther?
You could see his roots poking out from a mile away.
Lieutenant Gunther’s hair is that colour naturally, or as naturally as it can be when you’re an Esper heavily influenced by your powers.
They are not related, and I am sure that idiot did this intentionally to try and sow discord.
Unfortunately for him, I can figure that shit out from a mile away.” Kellen rolled his eyes.
“If there was a chance that Lieutenant Gunther was a member of the E.
A.
G.
he would have done a better job.
Maybe wear a wig next time?” Kellen suggested mildly, before stepping away from the podium. Stepping back with his injured leg, he wobbled for a second.
Both Sakura and Esper Blake jerked, going to catch him before he caught himself.
He did his best not to get embarrassed.
This was nothing.
This was just a normal reaction on their part. Esper Blake’s head suddenly jerked in a specific direction, her eyes bright and then Sakura turned her eyes towards that direction. “Someone is attempting to fire at you.” Esper Blake whispered, and Kellen felt a shiver of anticipation run down his spine. “Where?” He asked and she nodded towards the direction she was looking.
Kellen, his body trembling slightly with excitement, looked in the direction she was looking. Off in the distance there was a person set up on a rooftop.
Kellen was stunned that they hadn’t noticed them until now, but they could have been getting help from someone or something.
There weren’t a lot of Espers with the powers of invisibility, but there were a lot of monsters who had the power, thus a lot of items that could help you camouflage.
Kellen had a feeling that it was the latter that helped this person. Kellen pulled out his gun, and a rumble went through the crowd as he raised it up. “Uh, Guide Woods?” Sakura asked.
He understood.
From an outward look, this gun appeared to be a normal handgun.
There was a reason Kellen called it old faithful.
He’d had to be a pretty penny for it just over seven years ago, and getting it repaired cost a fuckton of money, but she was special. Kellen flicked up the small, super small viewfinder on the gun.
He rarely needed to use it, but they were far enough away that he didn’t want to miss and actually kill them.
Lining it up, he took his shot, the gun quiet and Sakura’s eyes were wide as she glanced back at him.
Esper Blake reported five seconds later. “Target…down.” She murmured and Kellen felt a wicked smile cross his face. “Oh good.
Let’s go, everyone.
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
I’m sure they’re scrambling.” Kellen tucked the viewfinder back, before shoving his gun back into his holster at his back.
Pamela had wide eyes as she met him at the bottom of the stairs, along with the D.E.C.
member who was looking at Kellen thoughtfully. “Is that an illegal model, Guide Woods?” The D.E.C.
member had every right to ask.
Kellen smiled cheekily. “Not illegal if it was grandfathered in.” Kellen said.
“But also, no.
This isn’t the illegal version.
I bought this at a normal shop about 8 years ago, before the regulations were put into place.
Don’t worry, it would have been taken away, but I don’t normally use it in the city.” Kellen told them, smiling.
“This was clearly extraordinary circumstances, was it not?
Someone attempted to shoot at me again.” Kellen’s expression was soft, deceiving, and the D.E.C.
member shook their head with a sigh before they relented. “Well, if no one has said anything about it till now, I won’t kick the hornet’s nest.
I can already imagine the level of paperwork, and it isn’t worth my time.” They muttered, before motioning that they should move. That was, until more gunshots went off, but closer.
Esper Blake covered Kellen completely as full pandemonium took over the space.
It appeared that that shooter was the trigger for some bigger operation.
Everyone who was working security swept in, attempting to quell the violence and get the crowd to safety.
Kellen could tell just from the way Esper Blake was looking around that most of the bullets were aimed for him. It wasn’t surprising.
He’d painted a giant target on his back, and he appeared to be the weakest link.
But Kellen wasn’t going to take this lying down. “Esper Blake, get off.
I can protect myself even without you on top of me.” She grumbled. “The Captain is going to be pissed if I do.” She told him and Kellen chuckled. “And would you rather both of us angry at you?” He asked her and she glanced down at him, her powers a vortex in her eyes.
It was fascinating to watch it happen.
He’d only encountered someone like this, this close, when they were surging.
In fact, that was how he ended up at the Saturn Guild. “Fuck.” She exclaimed before she stepped back.
“Not out of my sight.
It isn’t safe to go inside yet till the building is cleared.” She told him and Kellen nodded.
No doubt the Captain was taking this time to clear out who or what he’d seen.
That was the only reason Kellen could think he wasn’t being taken into the D.E.C.
right now. Esper Blake moved back from where she’d pressed Kellen against the wall, and was even kind enough to help him lean against the wall without it looking embarrassing.
Pamela was only a few steps away, while Sakura was hovering in the air above them, her hair whipping around her in a clear display of power as she plucked the bad people out of the crowd like the hand of god. She tossed them to the side, where several of her Guild’s Espers along with D.E.C.
members were waiting with handcuffs of varying types.
That was worrying.
Some of the people acting up were civilians. Kellen didn’t go for his gun right away.
He knew that everyone would expect that now that he’d done it, but it was more so he didn’t strain his injury.
If worse came to be, Kellen would gladly tear it to protect him and the others.
Kellen shuffled towards Pamela and the D.E.C.
member who were further down the wall. “Are you alright?” Kellen asked and Pamela gave a slow nod.
Kellen worried for a second that there was something wrong until he saw that her mouth was moving quickly, quietly, and she had her tablet held up to her lips.
He glanced at the screen, and realised she was in a call with someone. She had to be using her powers in a way Kellen had no idea about.
That was actually…very cool.
Esper Blake wasn’t letting Kellen get far, and kept her hand on his shoulder as he moved past Pamela and the D.E.C.
member who seemed to be working in tandem with her. He was moving towards the front doors, so that he wasn’t a target anymore.
Even if the walls leading into the D.E.C.
were glass, and so were the doors, they weren’t regular glass.
They should be able to withstand an attack, and Kellen just wanted one less target on the board. Several screams and shouts had both Kellen and Esper Blake distracted.
Distracted enough that they didn’t realise that one of the D.E.C.
members coming towards them had a terrifying look on their face until it was almost too late. “Esper Blake!” Kellen called just as the gun was raised. “You lowly Guide!” The D.E.C.
member called and Esper Blake’s eyes were wide, her hand raised.
“Fuck!
He has the same powers that I do!” She yelled and Kellen swallowed.
He moved towards the gunman, hoping that would scare him.
It did, only slightly, but that moment meant Kellen was able to grab onto the gun, dipping it enough that it wasn’t at his head.
He felt the barrel burn hot and jerked when the shot went off. “Guide Woods!” Esper Blake screamed and Kellen just knew he was going to be in trouble as he stared into the wide, but satisfied gaze of the traitor D.E.C.
member that the others were searching for.
Rhys was going to be pissed that he got shot again, and he wasn’t around. Kellen, pissed, reached out and grabbed the D.E.C.
member by his neck, the bullet a sharp sting against his chest.
He wasn’t going to let this one get away.
CREATORS’ THOUGHTS CalyB It’s just a little chaotic.
