Chapter 287: A missing shipment, an unregistered gun, and a press conference walk into a bar…
“Okay.
So, it looks like the gun had a different, only recently on the market, style of bullet in it.
Which was why it was able to cause the level of bruising to Guide Woods.” Lieutenant Fisher was giving them an update after Taylor had finished patching up Kellen.
Kellen sat, without his clothing on since he’d handed it over to get swabbed, and instead had a large bandage wrapped around his chest, and also Rhys’ jacket around his shoulders. Kellen was embarrassed it was a little big on him right now, since they weren’t too different in size, but he had just been guiding Taylor as she fixed him.
He had to be understanding.
It was one of the few times Taylor had ever asked him to do so instead of getting mad when he’d attempted to guide her while she was healing him. Everyone had gathered a few chairs and were seated around Lieutenant Fisher.
Sakura and Pamela had even arrived, and they had the two missing Captain’s on a laptop nearby. Uncle Tom looked ill, while Captain Sergei looked pissed.
Kellen could understand why.
They had done this press conference to try and calm everyone down, and instead it had turned into chaos.
And he wasn’t here.
That alone must have stung a lot. Uncle Tom?
Now, that was probably because he was worried about what was going to happen to him.
Kellen got injured twice, and so did Kellen’s Dad.
There was a reason he was hiding on the front lines, and Kellen was pretty sure it wasn’t just because of his Mom anymore. Rhys hadn’t allowed Kellen to sit down, and instead had Kellen standing, tucked between his legs, his arms wrapped around him from behind.
He wasn’t touching any part of Kellen that was injured, but it was a clear display of possession. No one cared.
The only reason that Kellen and Rhys were still here was because Rhys knew better than to attempt to take Kellen back to the Guild without letting him hear what had happened.
Kellen would no sooner leave this building without understanding what had happened then he would let that fucking Guide touch Rhys. They just weren’t going to happen.
Rhys had signed up for Kellen, that meant all of him.
Not the airbrushed version of him, but the real him. Which was one of the reasons Kellen wasn’t being too hard on him.
Rhys had explained to him how he had a hard time managing his powers and feelings.
Kellen was also used to being alone.
They both had to adjust and find a common ground.
They just, unfortunately, had to do it at an exceptional speed. “Does the D.E.C.
have access to these?
Or the military?” Sakura asked, her arms crossed, but her eyes back to a normal shade.
She was relatively calm, and had calmed down more when Taylor had explained to her what she had healed. It had surprised Kellen slightly that Sakura had such an in depth knowledge about medicine, but at the same time, it hadn’t either.
Poison was basically a medicine if used in super small quantities, and her Guild did have a specialization in it.
It would do her quite well to have knowledge about the topic. Lieutenant Fisher sighed, looking towards his Captain, who nodded. “The D.E.C.

was just getting these handed out amongst our…most trusted people.
Fuck.
I can’t believe that we are dealing with this at the same time as the gate.
I’m sorry everyone.
This is unacceptable.” Lieutenant Fisher apologised, bowing his head and Kellen felt his eyes widened. “Why are you apologising?
Do you think that you left space for these kinds of thoughts in your company?
Your Guild, essentially?
Sure, this affects us all, but you can’t blame yourself.
People are flawed, and if they had planned to do this from the beginning, how were you going to know?” Kellen said, surprising everyone.
As the one who had been shot twice, especially by the D.E.C.
member, he was sure people assumed he’d be out for blood. All of his actions until now kind of said that he would be. “Kellen, why are you being so forgiving?” Rhys asked carefully and Kellen shrugged.
“Why shouldn’t I?
I’m not forgiving the fuckers who shot me, but the people who had very little to do with them shooting me.
It’s the same reason I didn’t get mad at Casper for everything that happened with the Guides at our Guild.
He had no idea what they were planning, so why would I get angry at him for it?
Especially when I know that they are more likely to beat themselves up over what happened?
They don’t need someone else helping them do it.” Kellen told him, and Rhys stared at him, surprised.
They hadn’t talked about this before, and even Hill seemed mildly surprised. “I just thought…you were mad, but had just pushed it to the side.” Hill muttered and Kellen rolled his eyes. “Hill, I would never do something like that.
Most people in this room who know me know I am terrible at keeping things to myself.
Especially when I’m angry.” Kellen said, and Sakura snorted.
She turned her head to the side, smiling slightly as everyone turned their attention to her. “I should have known that.
I agree with Kellen, Lieutenant Fisher.
Until we do a more thorough investigation into the individual, and even after, you don’t need to ask for forgiveness from us.
I’m sure the public is going to demand it, so focus on that instead.
We’ll be fine.
We’re big boys and girls, and can, at the very least, handle it ourselves.” Her eyes glowed slightly.
“Now, if you need help dealing with the aftermath, don’t be afraid to call on us.
I hate people messing with my city.” Sakura told them, and Lieutenant Fisher sighed. “I…of course.” He said.
“Why would I keep this from you when it’s clear that none of you are involved with them?
You’ve all fought against them the hardest you possibly could.
I could not doubt a single person in this room.” For some reason, Kellen felt like his words were a dig, but he wasn’t sure how. “So, the gun is from a small batch, correct?” Pamela interjected.
“That means it should be easy to track, right?” Pamela shifted from where she was sitting, her exhaustion apparent.
She wouldn’t even let Kellen touch her, practically hissing at him when he’d attempted to.
She refused to get any more treatment from someone who was so obviously injured, but had promised him that she would get guiding as soon as they headed back to the Guild. “Theoretically, yes.” Lieutenant Fisher said, speaking for both him and Uncle Tom.
Kellen watched as Pamela’s brow twitched.
“That’s if they got these from our batch, and not from the several batches that went missing during transport.
Not to us, but to some of the other countries and cities that ordered them.
The company reported to us several months ago that a few shipments went missing.
We were not the only ones who received this message, as we were able to confirm with a few of the cities nearby that their shipments went missing.
But it does leave us in a bit of a pickle.” Kellen closed his eyes, pissed. These fuckers were like fucking cockroaches. He hated that he couldn’t just…cut off the head now and that be that.
It wasn’t as straightforward as dealing with gates were.
Sure, there was a lot of preparation for going into a gate, but once you got that down, it was a straight line for the most part. “Was there a reason this wasn’t reported to any of us?” Rhys asked from behind Kellen and Lieutenant Fisher looked a little ill.
So did Uncle Tom. “Uh, well,” “Come on, Lieutenant Thatcher, you should know better.
Of course they didn’t tell us because they thought these guns would be a one up over our esteemed establishments.
You don’t tell your competitors what you’re brewing up to compete with them with.” Sakura cut Lieutenant Fisher off, a grin on her lips, but her eyes were dangerous.
“Who was to know that this would blow up so spectacularly in their faces like this?
Of course, any of the Captains here could have predicted it, but we can’t blame them.
Captain Donaldson has been in his position for quite some time.
He’s bound to make a few bad calls.” Kellen wasn’t sure where the level of hostility came from, but it was there. Rhys chuckled behind him, pulling Kellen further against him until he was almost unstable on his feet. “Ah, of course.
You’re so right, Captain Sakura.
Maybe after all of this is done, it might be time for him to retire?
What a great way to go out, too.
After conquering a gate that many thought impossible, and dealing with a terrorist organisation that had sunk their fangs into his own D.E.C., Captain Donaldson retired after dealing with some of his greatest foes.
Has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?” Kellen felt his eyes widen and he turned to stare at the two. What the hell was going on here?
When did these two get so close?
Kellen was sure that Rhys didn’t like Sakura, but now they were plotting to have Uncle Tom retire?
Why?
CREATORS’ THOUGHTS CalyB Kellen looking around confused as even Uncle Tom knows what he’s done is…a little comical.
