- Chapter 297 - Chapter 297 Don't blame the one who didn't get shot
Chapter 297: Don’t blame the one who didn’t get shot Chapter 297: Don’t blame the one who didn’t get shot Taylor looked like she’d been through it when Kellen and Rhys showed up at her office door.
They were going to head to the room where they normally had their sessions, but Rhys stopped Kellen, halting him near the door. When they had knocked and Taylor opened the door, her hair was up in a bun, the dark circles around her eyes were worse, and her clothes were messy.
Her blue eyes looked dull, and she looked like even if she slept for a full day, it wouldn’t mean a thing. “Is it time?” She asked, exhausted and Kellen frowned. “I don’t-can someone else monitor the session?” He asked and Taylor sighed. “They aren’t in a better state than I am.
Honestly, I didn’t think that the Guide shortage would affect us as hard as it is, but here we are.
We’ll be fine soon.
I just…” Taylor took a deep breath in, her eyes lightening to the green shade of her powers.
“I really need a good Guide.” Kellen felt his cheeks warm at the undertone of that statement. Rhys chuckled. “Well, we’ll make sure that your team is the priority.
Should be any day now.
Have you visited the few Guides who came from Guiding Center B?” He asked carefully as she turned and started gathering the few things she needed for their session.
She shook her head. “No.
I let the rest of my team begin to harass them.
If you could have the Espers fucking behave like adults, that would be great, honestly.” Taylor grumbled, and Kellen smiled. “I doubt that’s going to happen, but you can keep wishing.” Kellen said, and Taylor shot him a narrow-eyed look. “You’re on my bad list too, sir.
I’ll need a full session before I can tackle that bruise and your leg.
Even what I took from you today wasn’t enough.
I’m just hoping that I have good compatibility with whoever comes in.” She said and Kellen nodded. There was a reason that Kellen had a huge chip on his shoulder when it came to his poor compatibility.
The worst part was that it came from his time in school.
They are always testing, always prodding, always pushing when you’re in school after you awaken.
Kellen was labeled a low compatibility Guide before he’d even started his first job. “Well, we have quite a variety, so let’s just hope.
Otherwise, it will free someone up from the current team to spend more time focusing on you.” Kellen said hopefully, and Taylor sighed. “You’re right.
It’ll be any day now.” She sounded like she was trying to hype herself up, and Kellen felt bad.
It was a feeling he’d never understand.
The constant weight on your shoulders from your powers literally eating away at you mentally. It was one of the few things he was thankful for as a Guide. Taylor led the way, and Rhys and Kellen didn’t play around.
Neither of them wanted to take up much of her time.
Kellen didn’t mention that when he checked on Rhys internally that he was rocky, dangerous, on a precipice. They had all been there when he’d found out that Kellen had been injured.
No one thought that Rhys was going to come out of that fully normal after, not with his level of power. Kellen would just have…to guide him while they were alone, is all.
The new way.
That they had slowly started doing and that Kellen found that…he really liked. Kellen was the one who rushed them out of the room and towards his parents, fighting the thoughts that had basically been plaguing him since their time in the car.
They needed to keep that type of activity to one space, one area like his apartment, or else he wasn’t sure how he was going to handle this. Kellen felt out of control.
He’d never been one who really cared for sexual acts.
He’d been rather indifferent to it all before this.

Brent hadn’t given him that nickname for nothing.
He hadn’t seen the point before Rhys had ugh…opened his eyes. Now?
Maybe it was the stress of the situation, but he really wanted Rhys to hold him, touch him, kiss him.
He also wanted to have dinner with his parents, but he didn’t feel like he could trust himself alone with Rhys at the moment.
Maybe it was just…everything coming to a head. The fact that he’d been shot, again.
The fact that they had meant for it to be fatal, and he’d prevented it.
That he’d successfully turned their attention to him, instead of his Dad.
At least, he was pretty sure that was what had happened.
Kellen wouldn’t know if he had succeeded in his unofficial goal until they attempted to harm someone again.
While he wasn’t looking forward to it, it was something that he’d have to keep an eye on. Either way, this day had been…a lot.
Kellen had found out a lot, done a lot, and now he wanted…he wanted Rhys pressed against him, his lips on his own, and he wanted to feel him. Blushing at his own thoughts, he held Rhys’ hand in his own while he used his cane with his other hand. “How is the cane?” Taylor asked and Kellen shrugged. “A cane?
It works?” He offered as she groaned. “What else was I expecting from you?” She muttered and Kellen felt his lips tug up. “A lot, apparently, since you expected me to give you anything but that as an answer.” Kellen told her and she glared at him.
Rhys laughed, squeezing Kellen’s hands. “He’s right.
He’s pretty practical, Green.
He’s not one to…give more than is asked.” Rhys told her and Taylor gave both of them a disgusted look. “Oh, you’re standing up for him?
Disgusting.
I should have known better.
I can’t be around two sets of you for long, so I’ll just check up on your Dad, and then I’m out of here.
Any longer and I’m going to feel tired and lonely.” She told them and Kellen grinned. “Soon you’ll find someone, Taylor.
I believe it.” Kellen told her, and Taylor rolled her eyes. “Sure Kellen.
I never took you as someone who would say that to me.” Kellen had no idea what that meant, but Rhys was chuckling, so he was sure it wasn’t too bad.
He couldn’t really ask since they had arrived at his Dad’s room and Taylor knocked before pushing the door open. Kellen’s Dad looked significantly better.
He didn’t look like a fragile little bird, and his Mom also appeared to be better.
Charlie, the Guide who Kellen had left in his Dad’s care also looked significantly better as well.
He looked like he’d filled out in the few days he hadn’t been able to visit, and that was a good thing. Everyone in this room, besides Taylor and probably Kellen, looked healthy. Speaking of, as soon as his parents laid eyes on Kellen behind Taylor, both of their happy, calm expressions darkened.
Kellen froze, not wanting to step into the room from the shiver that ran down his spine.
It was Rhys who forced him into the room, closing the door behind him as his Mom got to her feet and approached him. “You.” She said, her eyes shifting to purple and Kellen gulped.
Uh oh.
He was in some serious trouble.
“We all saw your press conference.
Are you a damn fool?
Rhys?
Why did you let him go by himself?
He was nearly killed!” She screeched, and Kellen winced.
He was really in for it. “It was something we had all agreed on.
Kellen wasn’t the only one who suggested it, and in fairness to Kellen, who would have expected that one of the D.E.C.
members would attempt to shoot him instead of guarding him?” Kellen watched as his Mom’s jaw worked.
As if she was chewing on Rhys’ words. Taylor moved over to Kellen’s Dad, doing exactly as she said she would. “I don’t care.
I wouldn’t have allowed that to happen to Henry.
I would have been by his side the whole time.” She said and Rhys chuckled, his hand tightening around Kellen’s. “You two are imprinted, so that makes sense.
Kellen and I aren’t, and I would never use a situation like this to try and convince him to.” Rhys said, and Kellen wasn’t sure if that was to comfort Kellen’s Mom, or if he was promising that to himself.
It sounded fairly…intentional. Kellen’s Mom was scowling, clearly pissed about the whole situation.
Her body language said as much without the energy that radiated off of her.
Her arms were crossed, and her jaw was tense.
Kellen clutched onto the cane under his hand. “That’s no excuse.
Imprint or not, Kellen is my-” “Mom, please, it’s fine.
I’m okay.
I made it out just fine, and Rhys is already beating himself up enough.
You don’t need to add to it.” Kellen told her, knowing that she was about to say something that he wouldn’t like, and she would regret.
Kellen didn’t want either of those things to happen, and his Dad smiled slightly. “Ellie.” He called, and Kellen watched as his Mom deflated slightly.
“Don’t blame Rhys for what Kellen did.” He told her and Kellen watched as his Mom battled with her emotions and finally relented. “Fine.
I’ll just get mad at our stupid son.” She said, and Kellen’s Dad grinned. “Good.
Save some of him for me, alright?
I need to give him a tongue lashing of my own.” Kellen did not like the sound of that, and Rhys turned, tucking his head into Kellen’s shoulder as he laughed silently. Kellen wanted to punch him, or push him away, but couldn’t.
Taylor’s snort from across the room didn’t help. “I-I’m not mad at you, Guide Woods.” Charlie offered up and Kellen sighed. “Thanks Charlie.” He muttered and Rhys’ shoulders shook harder.
They hadn’t even been able to invite them for dinner yet.
This was going great.
