Chapter 326: Just an excited boy and a very special test Chapter 326: Just an excited boy and a very special test Kellen stood silently in a room he’d always seen, but never actually been in.
He had his arms crossed, his expression grim as he heard the noises the machines around him made.
The Doctors and others in the room with him and Rhys were speaking to each other, moving around the room as Kellen watched Hill and Charlie on the other side of the glass. The head Doctor, a woman Kellen hadn’t seen before, was sat down in front of a large screen on a stool with wheels.
One side of her vision was on the giant glass window before her, while the other was focused on the screen before her.
Numbers were flashing across the screen, and they meant nothing to Kellen. On the table before her was a microphone, and Kellen realised that was how they were able to speak so clearly to him in the other room.
He admitted that he hadn’t put much thought into how he was able to hear the others when he’d gone in for his tests.
It wasn’t part of his concern. For now, he was concerned about how this was going to go for Charlie.
He didn’t really care what Charlie came out as.
Not really.
The man could come out as a D Class, and he wouldn’t care, he just didn’t want Charlie to be upset with the results. He didn’t think that Charlie would come out as a D Class, or even a C Class if he was honest.
He was sure it was something higher, just from the level of Guiding Charlie had provided thus far, how often, and how much he was being used by Guiding Center C. Kellen closed his eyes for a second, taking a moment as he felt his body tremble.
He swallowed thickly.
He could feel how his fear was affecting him, even after Rhys had helped calm him down.
He knew that Rhys was right beside him, but being surrounded by all of these people was making his nerves even worse. “Are you almost ready?” Rhys’ voice almost made Kellen jump.
His tone wasn’t rude, but it was clear he was impatient.
The woman in charge chuckled. “Almost, Captain Thatcher.
How are you two doing in there?
Excited?” It was a testament to the Doctor in charge that she wasn’t getting scared by the powerful people around her.
Charlie turned his head towards the room, grinning. “I’m super excited!
This is nothing like my first test!” Charlie had his shirt off, and Kellen’s chest ached at the fact that even after being in his parent’s care for as long as he had, you could still see his rib bones.
Either that was normal for Charlie, and his body wasn’t going to let him go further, or there was something else going on.
He’d have to talk to Taylor about it, because it was concerning. The people in the room shared a look, but the Doctor smiled at Charlie. “Oh wonderful.
Glad to hear it.
Lieutenant Hill, are you doing alright?” The Doctor asked and Hill nodded, giving a smile.
She was in her sports bra again, sitting across from Charlie with a grin.
They were already holding hands, but that wasn’t a big deal to Hill it appeared. It was clear to anyone that Charlie had something happen to him, and it was especially clear with the way that the two Espers were watching everyone with glowing eyes.
The orange and yellow combo were probably terribly intimidating.
Kellen wasn’t aware that his own eyes were glowing blue as well. “I am doing great as well.
Excited to be out of the office.” Hill said with a laugh, and the Doctor smiled. “Well, good news, we’re all ready on this side.
So, after I count down, would you please begin guiding Lieutenant Hill, Charlie, and then we’ll tell you when to stop?” Charlie nodded. “I can do that.” She grinned. “Perfect.

Alright, get ready.
In three, two, one, go!” Kellen held his breath as he watched this happen from the other side.
Machines started chirping and whirling, and Kellen tensed.
Rhys stepped closer to him, bumping his shoulder. “It’s going to be alright.
If something bad was going to happen like it did with us, it would have already happened.” Rhys whispered and Kellen swallowed.
He wasn’t so sure, but he appreciated that he was trying to calm him down as Kellen gripped onto his arms, his fingers straining. Everything, as far as he could tell, appeared to be going correctly, until a machine started beeping.
And then more.
And More.
Until almost all of the machines started beeping.
Kellen felt his whole body sway, as he turned to the Doctor in charge and watched as colour drained from her face. “What does that mean?” Kellen demanded, not as nice as Rhys was and the Doctor swallowed. “Uh, there isn’t anything going wrong with the test.
I think.” She replied, rushing around on her little roller stool as she attempted to check every machine that was beeping, but as soon as she left one machine, it would start up again.
In the chaos, one of the people watching a graph yelled out, “It’s still going up Dr.
Hainle!” The woman, presumably, Dr Hainle, rushed over, her eyes nearly popping out of her face. “Okay.
Alright.
Uh, well, he has about two minutes left until we need to cut him off, hold on.
Everyone just hold on.
We won’t know for sure until this is over.” Kellen swallowed.
She knew something, but it was clear she didn’t want to disclose this to anyone.
She glanced at Kellen and Rhys.
Kellen, who was so tense he looked like he could snap, and Rhys, who was the yellow-eyed demon behind him. She swallowed, before turning back to her work, and when the endless two minutes passed, she muted every single machine in the room with a button, and spoke into the mic.
It was actually quite impressive. “Alright, that’s enough Charlie!
You two did great.” Charlie released Hill’s hand with a grin, while Hill seemed a bit more disoriented.
Kellen nudged Rhys. “Go check on her.” He muttered and Rhys rushed off.
Kellen would check her levels himself, since he had checked where she was before they had even arrived at the Center. That meant that Kellen was alone in the room for a minute, and the Doctor, Dr.
Hainle looked at him. “Um, Mr.
Woods?” She asked carefully.
“Where did you find Charlie?” Kellen swallowed. “He was working in a Guiding Center and being taken advantage of.” Kellen stated firmly.
She swallowed. “Well, I’ve heard you have seen several tests, so I feel you would understand some of the numbers a bit more.
Would you come over here?” Kellen didn’t expect that she would bring up his past, and given that she hadn’t treated him any differently, he was surprised.
He swallowed, releasing his hands to drop them at his side and nodded, following her as she brought him over to the large screen.
She began to point out certain areas of the screen, using her fingers and a mouse to control the screen. “Over here is his base standard.
Already, that was high, which was why the alarms were sounding.
Over here is his pool to pull from.
That too, is huge, and why more machines were sounding.
Over here is how his guiding actually went up instead of remaining stagnant, which just tells us that he hasn’t done this test before.
That one isn’t too concerning.” She swallowed. She scrolled down the screen until they got to a graph.
At first, Kellen didn’t know what he was looking at, but when he realised, his eyes widened and he felt himself gasp. “This is…” Kellen trailed off, leaning in.
“Are you sure?” Kellen asked and Dr.
Hainle nodded.
Her grey eyes were sparkling, but at the same time, she seemed very nervous. “It’s…a good thing, of course, but with the origins you’ve told us about…it is deeply concerning.
Has he…gone through a test before?” She asked quietly, lowering her voice and Kellen swallowed. “He described going for a test on one of the older machines.
The generation before linking them to the internet after it had gotten back up.” She exhaled slowly, nodding.
She looked very concerned. “This is big news, especially after your increase in level.
It’s…a damn near miracle, but makes me very concerned.
This is a lot of S Classes in one city, in one place.
Especially for a city our size.
And with the new gate…I’m not one to panic about signs, but this is very alarming.” Kellen agreed as he stared at the graph. He was sure that this was how they were supposed to look.
A long, steady line, flat on the graph.
Pointing that Charlie, is all of his happy go lucky glee, was an S Class Guide. It explained a lot, and also caused him to have a lot more questions.
Where had he come from?
Who was the group that had him before?
Was he sold, or loaned to Guiding Center C?
Was someone going to come looking for him?
Did they have trackers on him?
Were they going to have to fight for him at a later date? Kellen didn’t mind.
He would absolutely do so, but he also knew that the country was going to lose their mind about this. “We can’t tell anyone.” Kellen told Dr.
Hainle, and she frowned. “Mr.
Woods, I know-” “It’s part of the S Class protocol for S Class Guides.” Kellen cut her off, and she shut her mouth.
She exhaled, frustrated and ran her hand through her hair. “Shit.
I forgot.
Forgive me, Mr.
Woods.” She muttered, before she spun and gave the rest of the room a hard look.
“You heard him.
Not a breath about this, am I clear?
If I find out that any one of you told another soul, even your partners, it’s directly to Lieutenant Fisher’s office, and then he’ll likely hand you over to the Saturn Guild for punishment.” She warned, with Kellen still in the room.
He turned, looking over every single person in the room slowly. Then, he smiled, showing off his teeth. “I’ll remember your faces.” He said calmly, and in combination with Dr.
Hainle’s words, it seemed to have the desired effect.
No one was going to breathe a word about what Charlie was, or who he was.
CREATORS’ THOUGHTS CalyB It’s confirmed!
