Chapter 328: How to protect a damaged Guide Chapter 328: How to protect a damaged Guide Their conversation with Lieutenant Fisher was short, sweet, and to the point.
Hill and Charlie remained outside in the hallway, both having received their candy for doing this sudden test, while Rhys and Kellen spoke to him. Lieutenant Fisher was surprised to hear the news, as Kellen was sure anyone would be, but he kept his composure. “What do you need?” He asked, and Rhys chuckled.
He’d taken a seat in one of the chairs in Lieutenant Fisher’s office.
It was pressed against the wall, allowing space for Lieutenant Fisher’s wheelchair to move through.
For a man who was so important, and had a disability that should be accommodated for, his office was too small. Kellen didn’t say anything on that, and remained standing.
He was sure Lieutenant Fisher knew what a slight that was, and didn’t need Kellen pointing it out.
As the other Captains had already decided that Uncle Tom was going to be on his way out soon, Kellen didn’t have to worry.
The office Uncle Tom occupied currently would be more than big enough for someone bound to a wheelchair. “You are quick to catch on.
I appreciate that.” Rhys told him, his praise sincere.
“We need you to make sure your people keep their mouths shut.
This is one of the worst times for this kind of news to come out, and we need to keep him safe and protected for now.
We will, of course, inform the Guiding authorities, as they are supposed to be informed and my dear Kellen would kill me if I kept this from them, but beyond that, no one else knows.
Charlie came in thinking he was a C Class, he will leave with others thinking the same.” Rhys’ voice left no room for discussion and Lieutenant Fisher nodded, before a slight smile touched his lips. “I look forward to when this does break.
It will reflect well when I take over for Captain Donaldson.
As soon as I rise to power, we find something like this?
I can’t wait to see the look on his face.” He chuckled, before he froze.
Both men turned to look at Kellen.
He stood with his hands behind his back, at rest.
Kellen could tell that the two men were tense, and Kellen shrugged. “What?” He asked, confused.
“If you are worried that I am upset that Uncle Tom is being usurped, I don’t really care.
I’ve gotten over most things he’s said to me, and he is a friend of my parents.
For how much longer, that is unknown, but I don’t really mind.
If the person in power no longer suits the needs of the people, I am not the kind of person who would care if they changed.” Kellen said calmly, and Rhys chuckled. “Does that also apply to me, Kellen?” He asked and Kellen shrugged, but he felt his lips twitch slightly. “That would depend.
Are you going to abuse your power?” He asked and Rhys’ gaze flared for a moment, before he chuckled. “If it was on one particular Guide, I might.” He teased and Kellen felt his cheeks heat. “Rhys Thatcher.” Kellen warned, and Rhys’ gaze turned golden. “That sounds so endearing coming from your lips.” He told him sweetly, while Kellen could feel his cheeks heating.
They were supposed to be having a serious conversation.
He had thought that Rhys was just joking, but this was a lot farther than just some joke.
Lieutenant Fisher cleared his throat. “Don’t stop on my accord.
You two can flirt where you want.
I would just like to ask if it is okay for me to speak to our newest monster?” Kellen’s expression darkened. “He isn’t a monster.” Kellen warned, and Lieutenant Fisher’s expression softened. “Of course.
I misspoke.
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
All Guides are soft beings, isn’t that what your Father advocates?” Kellen didn’t appreciate his sarcasm, but Rhys did.
He laughed. “I would be careful, Lieutenant Fisher.
Charlie may look nice and sweet, but he’s being raised by Kellen’s parents.
You’ve already seen how Kellen’s turned out, and his sister is sweeter, and twice as poisoned.
Charlie is probably going to turn out somewhere in between.” Lieutenant Fisher nodded, rolling out from behind his desk. “Then I would do my best to get into his good graces before he completely turns to the dark side, hmm?
Are you going to train him to be a Field Guide?” Lieutenant Fisher asked and Kellen hesitated.
He wasn’t so sure.
It was unusual for an A Class to be a Field Guide, but Kellen had never heard of an S Class being a Field Guide. They were beings akin to gods to this society.
Charlie had basically become an angel to all Espers in their Guild.
Kellen was sure that he could take care of the whole Guild on his own, if he was fully taken care of and maintained.
Like a damn machine, but Kellen didn’t want that future for the kid. He’d barely just gotten freedom from the hell he wasn’t even aware he had been living in.
Kellen didn’t want to force him to do anything.
Kellen was also sure it was Charlie’s energy of being an S Class that was influencing him to be this protective of him, that was written about in the books, but Kellen didn’t really mind that. He might be projecting himself onto Charlie, but he didn’t think that was a bad thing either.
He wanted Charlie to be able to live the life he wanted.
To experience things.
Live life.
Not be held back by a Class level or being a Guide.
It was a silly thought, since if he was caught there was a chance he could be harmed beyond repair, but Kellen still wanted it for him. “I am not sure.” Kellen finally answered, his feelings complex.
Rhys nodded. “While you are unsure, I would suggest if he doesn’t seem opposed to it, you get him working out at the very least.
He’s too skinny, and needs to build up some muscle.
For his own safety at this point.
Take it as bonding time.
I’m sure the other Espers in the gym wouldn’t mind showing him around, and his energy alone will do enough work that you shouldn’t have to worry about anyone having ill intentions.
If you do notice something, just tell me and I’ll knock some sense into them.” Rhys gave him a thumbs up, and a wink.
Kellen felt his lips pull up slightly before he nodded, while Lieutenant Fisher paused, a light smile on his face. “Your Guild sounds quite lovely, Captain Thatcher, Guide Woods.
I do agree that he should learn some self defense.
I also think it is quite surprising that he is a male too.
Most of his…caliber before have been women.” That was something that Kellen hadn’t been thinking about too strongly. There were too many connotations that Kellen didn’t like, and he could tell that even though Lieutenant Fisher said it lightly, the grip on the armrests of his chair were tight. “I assume we’ll have your help when we pursue this?” Kellen asked and he scoffed. “My help?
You’ll have as many people as you need to flush this city out.
It appears we’ve been far too complacent, and I will not stand for it.” He growled, his eyes going completely black in a show of power.
Kellen felt a shiver run down his spine, and then was surprised that it happened. He hadn’t interacted much with others who had Darkness powers, since they were rare like his family’s invisibility powers, but he had heard that people often felt uncomfortable around those who had them. Most ended up as criminals, or involved in some way.
Kellen had no idea why, but he did think it was admirable that Lieutenant Fisher had risen to such a high position with such a bias against him.
In fact, he had two against him, which made his success even sweeter.
Kellen, who hadn’t met this man before, had a feeling that was intentional on Uncle Tom’s side, but he didn’t mind it now. Things were shifting, and Kellen hoped for the better.
The newer generation was going to take over now, leaving the older generation to act as mentors as they moved into the new era.
Kellen was happy that there were enough of the old timers around that they could do that, but he also felt that it was time. Kellen’s fingers itched as he thought about all the work he had to do, all the people he had to protect, and everything that was at stake. He wasn’t about to take getting shot twice by some fucking rando with a bad dye job sitting down.
He was going to wrap his hands personally around that idiot’s neck and drag them into prison. He just didn’t know what was going to come first.
Wrangling the damn E.A.G.
idiots, or having to stabilize the gate so that it didn’t explode.
He really, really hoped that he didn’t have to do both at the same time.
Kellen had gotten stronger, but not to that level.
He’d need to be an SS Class Guide to manage that, and he wouldn’t wish that kind of power on his worst enemy.
CREATORS’ THOUGHTS CalyB Lieutenant Fisher clearly wants to curry favour with the Saturn Guild, which is why he sent his cousin in as the Doctor overseeing the test.
He also clearly hates the way that the D.E.C.
was ran before this.
Changes are coming!
